In short

In this app's computation Rahu was in sidereal Cancer, with Ketu in Capricorn, from 18 August 2017 to 7 March 2019 (UTC); the next stay is 24 March 2036 to 11 October 2037. The engine reads Rahu here as testing for Aries, Cancer, Leo and Sagittarius Moons and favourable for Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius.

Cancer is the Moon's own sign, and Capricorn, across from it, is Saturn's. When Rahu is in Cancer the axis runs from the sign of the luminary that Gochara counts from to the sign of the slowest classical graha. For the nodes start with Rahu in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology; for the signs, Cancer, Karka rashi and Capricorn, Makara rashi.

This is a page of positions and rules. It names the dates, the house of each node for each Moon sign and the verdict the engine attaches, then sets that against the classical text. The Gochar calculator does the same for your own chart.

Dates: when Rahu is in Cancer and Ketu in Capricorn

Rahu here is the mean node, the averaged position of the Moon's ascending node, which moves steadily backwards through the zodiac. Because the mean node never stations or turns direct, it never backs out of Cancer and re-enters: each row is one clean stay, and there are no re-entry rows. Ketu is the point exactly opposite, so it occupies Capricorn for the same interval. The table covers 1990 to 2050.

This app's computation (mean lunar node, Lahiri ayanamsa; transit-ingresses.mjs rahu cancer and engine-facts.mjs rahu-transit-in-cancer, run 2026-10-14), to the minute in UTC. Ketu enters and leaves Capricorn at the same moments, exactly opposite. Other software, or one that uses the true node, may differ by hours to a day or two near an ingress.

The 2017-2019 stay started at 01:11 UTC on 18 August 2017, 06:41 in India, when Rahu left Leo, and ended on 7 March 2019 as it moved on into Gemini. The 1999-2000 stay is the earlier pass in the window, and 24 March 2036 to 11 October 2037 is the next. Each of the three runs 566 days.

Counted from your Moon: the house Rahu and Ketu fall in

Gochara (the term) counts from the natal Moon sign, not the Lagna. Count your Moon sign as 1 and step forward to Cancer: that is Rahu's house for you. Ketu is always six signs further on. The engine treats both nodes as natural malefics and gives them the same verdicts: the 1st, 8th and 12th are "testing", so is the 4th; the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th are "favourable"; the 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th, where its source is silent, are "neutral". It also has a short "intensified" list that pairs Rahu with the 9th and Ketu with the 2nd.

Houses, verdicts and flags from computeGochara() in server/src/services/kundaliEngine.js, run 2026-10-14 with Rahu in Cancer and Ketu in Capricorn; the Rahu column matches engine-facts.mjs rahu-transit-in-cancer fromEachMoonSign.

The Scorpio and Sagittarius Moons carry the two flags here. Cancer is the 9th from Scorpio, Rahu's intensified house, with a neutral verdict and Ketu favourable in the 3rd; Capricorn is the 2nd from Sagittarius, Ketu's intensified house, favourable, while Rahu in Cancer is that Moon's 8th and testing. For a Cancer Moon, Rahu sits on the Moon sign; for a Capricorn Moon, Ketu does. A Libra Moon has Rahu in the 10th (neutral) and Ketu in the 4th (testing).

What the classical texts say about the nodes in transit

Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II has a short section, "Transit effects of Rahu and Ketu" (pp. 317-318). It says Rahu "produces good results" in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon, Sun or Ascendant, and calls it "very bad" over the Moon sign or in the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 12th. Applied to Rahu in Cancer, the book's good list is the Taurus, Virgo, Libra and Aquarius Moons and its bad list is the Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces Moons. The engine agrees on most rows but not all: for a Gemini Moon Cancer is the 2nd, which the engine calls favourable and the book calls bad, and for a Libra Moon it is the 10th, which the book calls good and the engine leaves neutral. The two sources follow different lists, and this page shows the engine's.

Advanced Predictive Astrology also says Rahu "molests a luminary", particularly the Moon, and that when transiting Rahu conjoins the natal Moon "the mental equilibrium" is disturbed. That refers to the natal Moon's degree, not to the sign Cancer: for a Cancer-Moon chart, this transit is the period when such a conjunction can happen. The book's language is strong; this app reports it as the text's claim and does not compute it, and the engine's own reading of the 1st from the Moon is simply "testing".

The sign itself: Cancer with Capricorn opposite

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 1/2 assigns neither node any dignity in Cancer or Capricorn; the signs it names are Taurus and Scorpio (exaltation), Gemini and Sagittarius (moolatrikona), and Aquarius and Scorpio (own), with Virgo and Pisces as a minority view. This app assigns the nodes no dignity at all, and engine-facts reports Rahu in Cancer and Ketu in Capricorn as neutral through the sign. The lords that matter for a natal reading are the Moon (Cancer) and Saturn (Capricorn).

The birth-chart versions of these placements are on Rahu in Cancer and Ketu in Capricorn. They describe a native born with the node there; this page describes the node moving through.

It is easy to confuse two things on this axis. The Moon sign used for Gochara is your natal Moon's sign, whatever it is; Cancer being the Moon's own sign does not make Rahu in Cancer a "Moon transit" for everyone. Only for people whose natal Moon is in Cancer does this transit put Rahu over the Moon sign, and only when transiting Rahu reaches the natal Moon's degree is there the conjunction the book describes. The mean node's steady motion means that degree is crossed once per pass.

Worked example: a Scorpio Moon from 2016 to 2020

Take a natal Moon in Scorpio. Cancer is the 9th sign from it and Capricorn the 3rd. With the Cancer dates above and the adjacent-sign runs:

  1. 29 January 2016 to 18 August 2017: Rahu in Leo, the 10th from this Moon (neutral); Ketu in Aquarius, the 4th (testing).
  2. 18 August 2017 to 7 March 2019: Rahu in Cancer, the 9th (neutral, with the engine's "intensified" flag for Rahu); Ketu in Capricorn, the 3rd (favourable).
  3. 7 March 2019 to 23 September 2020: Rahu in Gemini, the 8th (testing); Ketu in Sagittarius, the 2nd (favourable, with Ketu's "intensified" flag).

This Moon sign gets both of the engine's node flags in consecutive passes - Rahu's in 2017-2019 and Ketu's in 2019-2020. The flag marks a named pairing from the engine's source, not a verdict; the verdict column is what says testing or favourable. Advanced Predictive Astrology would call the first step good for Rahu (the 10th) and say nothing about the second (the 9th is on neither of its lists). Set any of this against the period running in the chart; see the Ketu Mahadasha and the Rahu Mahadasha.

The pass before is Rahu transit in Leo; the pass after is Rahu transit in Gemini. Other slow transits through Cancer: Saturn transit in Cancer and Jupiter transit in Cancer. Background on why the Moon is the reference: Moon sign and nakshatra.

When was Rahu last in Cancer?
In this app's computation, from 18 August 2017 to 7 March 2019 (UTC), with Ketu in Capricorn. The next stay is 24 March 2036 to 11 October 2037.
Is Rahu in Cancer worse because Cancer is the Moon's sign?
Not in this engine. Gochara verdicts depend on the house from your own natal Moon, not on the sign's lord. Advanced Predictive Astrology's remarks about Rahu and the Moon concern Rahu reaching the natal Moon itself.
Which Moon signs get a favourable Ketu in Capricorn?
Sagittarius (2nd), Scorpio (3rd), Leo (6th) and Pisces (11th), by the engine's malefic rule.
Is the Cancer Moon's verdict the same in the engine and in Advanced Predictive Astrology?
Yes, on this row they agree: the engine calls Rahu on the Moon sign testing, and the book lists the Moon sign as "very bad" for transiting Rahu. Your own row is in the Gochar calculator.
Why are there no re-entry rows?
The engine uses the mean node, whose motion is uniform and always backward, so it never re-enters a sign it has just left.
