In short
In this app's computation Saturn is next in sidereal Cancer from 12 July 2034 to 28 August 2036. The previous passage ran in three stays between September 2004 and July 2007. Counted from the Moon, Saturn in Cancer is Sade Sati for Leo, Cancer and Gemini Moons, Ashtama Sani for Sagittarius and Ardha Ashtama Sani for Aries.
Cancer is the Moon's own sign, watery and Sattvic in BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 10-11, strong at night. Saturn is not at ease there: the engine reads Saturn in Cancer as an "Enemy sign" placement, and Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 313) lists Saturn in Cancer or Leo among its "detrimented" positions, meaning 180 degrees from the planet's own signs, Capricorn and Aquarius. Those are statements about the planet. Gochara asks something else: which house from your Moon Cancer is. Start with Saturn in Vedic astrology and Cancer, Karka rashi for the background.
Nothing on this page is a forecast. It gives the engine's dates and verdicts; the Gochar calculator gives the same verdict for your own Moon on any date.
When Saturn is in Cancer: the ingress dates
The engine finds four stays in 1990-2050. The first three make up one passage.
| Enters Cancer (UTC) | Leaves Cancer (UTC) | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| 7 September 2004 | 11 January 2005 | Retrograde back into Gemini |
| 27 May 2005 | 3 November 2006 | Into Leo, then retrograde back |
| 7 January 2007 | 17 July 2007 | Moves on into Leo |
| 12 July 2034 | 28 August 2036 | Moves on into Leo |
The 2004-2007 passage began with four months in Cancer, retreated into Gemini until late May 2005, then ran for about eighteen months before touching Leo in November 2006. Saturn came back into Cancer for the first half of 2007 and only left on 17 July 2007. Counting from the first entry to the last exit gives almost three years, but Saturn was not in Cancer for all of it. The 2034-2036 passage is a single stay of a little over two years.
The returns are retrograde motion (vakri). The Gochar calculator shows the flag and Saturn's degree inside the sign.
Cancer counted from your Moon: the house and the verdict
Gochara (the term explained) counts from the natal Moon sign. The engine's verdicts for Saturn by house: 1st, 8th, 12th testing and most intense; 4th testing; 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 11th favourable; 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th neutral. Sade Sati is 12th-1st-2nd; Ashtama Sani is the 8th; Ardha Ashtama Sani is the 4th.
| Natal Moon sign | Cancer is the | Gochara verdict | Engine note (shortened) | Named Saturn period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 4th | Testing | Among the bad positions; steadiness over new commitments | Ardha Ashtama Sani |
| Taurus | 3rd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Gemini | 2nd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | Sade Sati, setting phase |
| Cancer | 1st | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, peak phase |
| Leo | 12th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, rising phase |
| Virgo | 11th | Favourable | The 11th is favourable for every transiting planet | - |
| Libra | 10th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Scorpio | 9th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Sagittarius | 8th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Ashtama Sani |
| Capricorn | 7th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Aquarius | 6th | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Pisces | 5th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
For a Libra Moon, Cancer is the 10th: neutral in the engine, "a period of gain" in Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 311). Libra being Saturn's exaltation sign does not enter into it; the count is what matters. Use the Moon sign calculator if you need your Moon sign, and Moon sign and nakshatra for why it is the reference.
Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Ardha Ashtama Sani during the Cancer passage
- Leo Moon: Cancer is the 12th, the rising phase of Sade Sati, from 12 July 2034.
- Cancer Moon: the peak phase. The engine raises its "intensified" flag for Saturn in the 1st from the Moon. Advanced Predictive Astrology adds a remark of its own (p. 312): for people whose natal Moon is placed with Saturn, Sade Sati "does not make much difference". That is the book's claim; the engine does not apply it.
- Gemini Moon: the setting phase, ending on 28 August 2036.
- Sagittarius Moon: Cancer is the 8th, Ashtama Sani - the worked example below.
- Aries Moon: Cancer is the 4th, Ardha Ashtama Sani.
In the North Indian list Advanced Predictive Astrology reports (p. 312), Cancer's heavier stretch is the middle two and a half years, Leo's the first and Gemini's the last. A school's view; not computed here. The Sade Sati calculator uses the whole-sign rule, explained on the Sade Sati page and in the glossary.
How long Saturn spends in Cancer, and the nakshatras it crosses
Subtracting the engine's ingress times, the 2004-2007 passage put Saturn in Cancer for 841 days in total - 126, 525 and 190 - spread over almost three years of calendar. The 2034-2036 passage is 777 days without a break. The 913 days the Gochar calculator shows as a duration label is the average for Saturn in any sign, not a figure for Cancer.
By the engine's table Cancer holds the last pada of Punarvasu, all of Pushya and all of Ashlesha. A Moon at the very start of Cancer and one at its end are both "Cancer Moons" to the whole-sign rule, so Saturn's entry into Gemini starts the Sade Sati count for both on the same day. Advanced Predictive Astrology's alternative - Saturn within 45 degrees of the natal Moon's exact position - would start it at different times for the two. This app uses the whole-sign rule and says so.
The calculator's degree readout is the practical way to see where Saturn is inside the sign. Early degrees mean most of the stay is ahead; late degrees, especially with the retrograde flag set, mean a boundary crossing is near.
What the classical texts say
BPHS and Saravali in this library give no transit reading for Saturn in Cancer. What the corpus does offer for this sign is the "detrimented" idea in Advanced Predictive Astrology: a planet 180 degrees from its own sign. The book says malefics in such positions in a birth chart weigh heavily, and that transits into those positions call for caution. It is an unusual rule - not a classical dignity in BPHS - and this app does not compute it. It is mentioned so a reader who meets it elsewhere knows where it comes from.
On the houses, the book's list matches the engine at the favourable end (3rd, 6th, 11th) and parts from it on the 2nd, which the engine counts favourable and the book does not mention, and on the 10th, as noted above.
The sign itself: the Moon's water sign
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, an enemy of Saturn in the classical friendships. The engine labels Saturn there "Enemy sign" across the whole sign. The natal reading of that is on Saturn in Cancer. For transit, this app does not alter the verdict because of the sign's lord. A Cancer transit is the 8th from Sagittarius whether its lord is friend or foe to Saturn.
Worked example: a Sagittarius Moon and Ashtama Sani
Take a natal Moon in Sagittarius. Cancer is the 8th from it; Gemini the 7th; Leo the 9th. The past passage shows how the retrograde loops break up a named period:
- 7 September 2004 to 11 January 2005: Saturn in Cancer, the 8th - Ashtama Sani, Gochara "testing".
- 11 January 2005 to 27 May 2005: back in Gemini, the 7th - "neutral".
- 27 May 2005 to 3 November 2006: Cancer again - Ashtama Sani.
- 3 November 2006 to 7 January 2007: Leo, the 9th - "neutral".
- 7 January 2007 to 17 July 2007: Cancer for the last time on that passage - Ashtama Sani.
- 12 July 2034 to 28 August 2036: the next Ashtama Sani for this Moon, in one unbroken stay.
Advanced Predictive Astrology quotes Varahamihira on Ashtama Sani in bleak personal terms (p. 313). This app reports that as the classical reading and uses its own wording, "a period that calls for real patience and consolidation". Read alongside the dasha - the book's "other limb" - a Saturn Mahadasha is a different context from a Jupiter Mahadasha, and Jupiter rules Sagittarius.
Neighbouring signs: Saturn transit in Gemini and Saturn transit in Leo. Other slow transits through Cancer: Jupiter transit in Cancer and Rahu transit in Cancer.
- When is Saturn next in Cancer?
- From 12 July 2034 to 28 August 2036 (UTC) in this app's computation, with no retrograde return on that passage.
- When was Saturn last in Cancer?
- In three stays: 7 September 2004 to 11 January 2005, 27 May 2005 to 3 November 2006, and 7 January 2007 to 17 July 2007.
- Which Moon signs are in Sade Sati with Saturn in Cancer?
- Leo (rising, the 12th), Cancer (peak) and Gemini (setting, the 2nd).
- Does Saturn being in an enemy sign make this transit harder?
- Not in this app's Gochara rule, which depends only on the house from your Moon. Sign dignity matters for reading a birth chart.
- Who does the engine call favourable for Saturn in Cancer?
- Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius Moons. Testing: Aries, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius. Neutral: the rest. See the Gochar calculator.
