In short
In this app's computation Saturn next enters sidereal Aries on 2 June 2027, slips back into Pisces on 21 October 2027, and holds Aries from 22 February 2028 to 6 August 2029, with a last stay from 6 October 2029 to 16 April 2030. It is Sade Sati for Taurus, Aries and Pisces Moons, Ashtama Sani for Virgo and Ardha Ashtama Sani for Capricorn.
Aries is where Saturn is weakest by dignity. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts Saturn's exaltation in Libra and its debilitation in the seventh sign from there, which is Aries, and this app's engine labels Saturn "Debilitated" across all thirty degrees of the sign. Aries itself, in BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 6-7, is a fiery, Rajasic sign ruled by Mars that "denotes courage". The slow, restraining graha in the quick, Mars-ruled sign is the pairing this page is about. For Saturn in general see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the sign, Aries, Mesha rashi.
Debilitation is a fact about the planet's strength in a birth chart. In Gochara the question is different: which house from your natal Moon is Aries? That count, not the dignity, drives the verdicts below. The Gochar calculator does the count for your own Moon on any date. This page does not tell anyone what will happen; it lays out the dates and the rule.
When Saturn is in Aries: the ingress dates
Between 1990 and 2050 the engine finds four separate stays. Only one of them is in the past. The coming passage is broken into three pieces by two retrograde loops, one at each end of the sign.
| Enters Aries (UTC) | Leaves Aries (UTC) | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| 18 April 1998 | 7 June 2000 | Moves on into Taurus |
| 2 June 2027 | 21 October 2027 | Retrograde back into Pisces |
| 22 February 2028 | 6 August 2029 | Into Taurus, then retrograde back |
| 6 October 2029 | 16 April 2030 | Into Taurus for the rest of the passage |
The 1998-2000 passage was clean: one entry from Pisces, one exit into Taurus, a little over two years. The next one is not. Saturn first touches Aries for under five months in 2027, returns to Pisces, then settles in from 22 February 2028. At the far end it crosses into Taurus on 6 August 2029, backs into Aries on 6 October 2029 and leaves for good on 16 April 2030. Anyone counting "Saturn in Aries" from a single start and end date is skipping two reversals.
Those reversals are retrograde motion (vakri): seen from Earth, Saturn appears to move backwards for part of each year, and near a sign boundary that is enough to carry it out of the sign and back. The Gochar calculator shows a retrograde flag and Saturn's degree in the sign; a degree near 0 or 30 is where these crossings happen.
Aries counted from your Moon: the house and the verdict
Gochara (the term) counts from the natal Moon sign. The engine gives Saturn "testing" in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th from the Moon, "favourable" in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th, and "neutral" in the 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th. The same count names the Saturn periods: 12th, 1st and 2nd are Sade Sati; the 8th is Ashtama Sani; the 4th is Ardha Ashtama Sani.
| Natal Moon sign | Aries is the | Gochara verdict | Engine note (shortened) | Named Saturn period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1st | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, peak phase |
| Taurus | 12th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, rising phase |
| Gemini | 11th | Favourable | The 11th is favourable for every transiting planet | - |
| Cancer | 10th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Leo | 9th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Virgo | 8th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Ashtama Sani |
| Libra | 7th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Scorpio | 6th | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Sagittarius | 5th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Capricorn | 4th | Testing | Among the bad positions; steadiness over new commitments | Ardha Ashtama Sani |
| Aquarius | 3rd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Pisces | 2nd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | Sade Sati, setting phase |
Note the Cancer row. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 311) says that when Saturn reaches the 10th from the Moon it is "a period of gain"; the engine's source gives Saturn no rule for the 10th, so the engine says neutral. The two disagree and this page reports both. If you are unsure of your Moon sign, the Moon sign calculator finds it, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the Moon is the reference.
Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Ardha Ashtama Sani while Saturn is in Aries
- Taurus Moon: Aries is the 12th, so Saturn's entry on 2 June 2027 opens the rising phase of Sade Sati. The retrograde return to Pisces from 21 October 2027 suspends it until 22 February 2028.
- Aries Moon: the peak phase, Saturn over the natal Moon sign. The engine also raises its "intensified" flag, because its list pairs Saturn with the 1st from the Moon.
- Pisces Moon: the setting phase, which ends when Saturn finally leaves Aries on 16 April 2030 - not on the first Taurus ingress of 6 August 2029.
- Virgo Moon: Aries is the 8th, Ashtama Sani.
- Capricorn Moon: Aries is the 4th, Ardha Ashtama Sani. Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, which changes nothing in the count; the house is still the 4th.
Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) records a North Indian school that marks one part of each Moon sign's Sade Sati as the heaviest. Of the three signs touched here, it gives Aries the middle two and a half years, Taurus the first two and a half, and Pisces the last five. That is a reported tradition; the engine does not use it. The Sade Sati calculator marks the whole-sign window, and the Sade Sati page and glossary entry give the rule and its exceptions, including the book's yogakaraka exception and its 45-degree alternative boundary.
What the classical texts say about Saturn in transit
The corpus this site draws on has no passage on Saturn transiting Aries as such. What it has is a rule by house from the Moon. Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 311) puts Saturn's good transit results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon, adds the 10th as a period of gain, and treats the 4th and 8th (p. 313) and the 12th-1st-2nd run (pp. 311-312) as the difficult stretches. The book's own language for those stretches is severe; this app reports them as named periods that ask for steadiness, not as forecasts.
One thing the book adds is a reading from the other side of Sade Sati: once Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon, it says, a person turns "a new leaf" (p. 312). For Aries that is the Aquarius Moon, for whom this transit is "favourable" in the engine as well. A debilitated Saturn does not alter the house count; whether the natal chart has Saturn as a yogakaraka is the exception the book names, and that needs the full chart.
The sign itself: Mars's sign, Saturn's fall
Aries is ruled by Mars. The engine reads Saturn there as debilitated from 0 to 30 degrees (BPHS gives the deepest fall at the same degree as the deepest exaltation, 20). For a birth chart that matters a great deal; see Saturn in Aries and the neecha glossary entry. For transit, this app does not weaken or soften the Gochara verdict on account of dignity. The verdict table above is the same whether Saturn is in its fall or its exaltation.
Worked example: a Taurus Moon as Saturn enters Aries
Take a natal Moon in Taurus. Aries is the 12th sign from it, so Saturn there is the rising phase of Sade Sati and a "testing" Gochara verdict. Reading the dates from the tables:
- Until 2 June 2027 Saturn is in Pisces, the 11th from Taurus: "favourable", the 11th being good for every planet.
- From 2 June 2027 to 21 October 2027 Saturn is in Aries: Sade Sati begins, rising phase.
- From 21 October 2027 to 22 February 2028 Saturn is back in Pisces, the 11th again; by the whole-sign rule Sade Sati is paused.
- From 22 February 2028 to 6 August 2029 Saturn is in Aries: the rising phase resumes.
- From 6 August 2029 to 6 October 2029 Saturn is in Taurus, the 1st: the peak phase starts. It then backs into Aries until 16 April 2030, the rising phase once more, before re-entering Taurus.
So the "start date" of this person's Sade Sati depends on which rule you ask. The whole-sign rule says 2 June 2027 with a gap; the 45-degree rule in Advanced Predictive Astrology would begin later, once Saturn is within 45 degrees behind the natal Moon's exact degree. The North Indian list marks the first two and a half years as the heavy part for Taurus. None of these is a prediction. The transit is read with the dasha running at the time, which the book calls the other limb of prediction; a Saturn Mahadasha and a Venus period are different backgrounds for the same transit.
The sign before and after: Saturn transit in Pisces and Saturn transit in Taurus. The other slow transits through Aries are Jupiter transit in Aries and Rahu transit in Aries.
- When does Saturn enter Aries?
- In this app's computation, first on 2 June 2027 (UTC). It returns to Pisces on 21 October 2027 and re-enters Aries on 22 February 2028. The earlier passage ran from 18 April 1998 to 7 June 2000.
- When does Saturn finally leave Aries?
- On 16 April 2030, after a first crossing into Taurus on 6 August 2029 and a retrograde return to Aries on 6 October 2029. Other software may differ by hours to a day or two near those dates.
- Saturn is debilitated in Aries. Does that make the transit worse?
- Not in this app. Debilitation is a dignity used in reading a birth chart. The Gochara verdict depends only on which house Aries is from your natal Moon, and the engine applies the same rule in every sign.
- Which Moon signs have Sade Sati with Saturn in Aries?
- Taurus (rising phase, Aries is the 12th), Aries (peak, the 1st) and Pisces (setting, the 2nd).
- Is Saturn in Aries good for my Moon sign?
- The engine calls it favourable for Gemini, Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces Moons, testing for Aries, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, and neutral for the rest. Check your own Moon in the Gochar calculator.
