Saturn in Aries: how this app's engine labels its dignity, what Saravali Ch. 29, BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras say about it, which aspects change the reading, what Saturn rules from each Lagna, and a fully worked chart.

In short

Saturn in Aries is Saturn debilitated: BPHS puts its fall in Aries, deepest at 20 degrees, and this engine labels the whole sign Debilitated. Saravali reads the sign harshly, then turns the verdict on the aspecting planet, and BPHS qualifies the debilitated Saturn in the same sloka that names it.

Saturn in Aries is Saturn in its sign of debilitation. That label is fixed by the sign and degree alone. What the placement means is a separate question, and the classical texts answer it through the aspects on Saturn, the house Aries occupies in your chart and the houses Saturn rules from your Lagna.

This page covers only the combination. For Saturn as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Saturn in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its nature, its nakshatras and what a rising Aries means - see Aries, Mesha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Saturn in Aries specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.

Saturn in Aries: dignity, and how this app decides it

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Saturn (Shani) its exaltation in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20 degrees, and its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, Mesha (Aries), at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 adds that Saturn's arrangement in Kumbha (Aquarius) is the same as the Sun's in Simha: the first 20 degrees Moolatrikona, the rest its own house. The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats all of this and adds that the whole of Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, that Mercury and Venus are its friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, and Jupiter neutral. The terms have their own entries: uchcha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation), Moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).

So Saturn in Aries is Saturn in its sign of debilitation, the exact opposite of Saturn in Libra. This app's engine labels it Debilitated across the whole sign, from 0 to 30 degrees. The texts name 20 degrees as the deepest point of the fall; the dignity label does not change with distance from that point, so a Saturn at 2 degrees and one at 20 degrees of Aries carry the same label. The classical cancellation rules for a debilitated graha are a separate topic, covered under neecha bhanga.

How the engine decides

The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the fivefold relation with the sign's lord. For Saturn in Aries one of the first four tests always answers, so no other planet's position can change the label. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the steps in the same order but puts Moolatrikona a quarter below exaltation, where the engine scores them equally.

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 names an avastha for exaltation (Dipt), own sign (Swasth), a great friend's, friend's, neutral's, enemy's and great enemy's sign (Pramudit, Shanta, Din, Duhkhit, Khal), and eclipse by the Sun (Kop). Debilitation has no step of its own in that list; Mars, the lord of Aries, is an enemy of Saturn in the natural table, but the engine never reaches the friendship test here.

The nakshatras Saturn moves through in Aries

Aries holds all four padas of Ashwini; all four padas of Bharani; and pada 1 of Krittika. The deepest point of the fall the texts name, 20 degrees of Aries, falls inside Bharani (13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes). The nakshatra pages go further: Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika.

What the classical texts say about Saturn in Aries

Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 1-2

Saravali's chapter on Saturn in the twelve signs gives Aries one line. In paraphrase it reads: a wholly unfavourable line: hardship that comes of vice and heavy labour, deceit, hostility towards relatives, blame, talkativeness, poverty, a poor appearance, ill temper, jealousy and base acts. Like every line in the chapter it describes a type, not a person, and it is a single text's view.

The neighbouring lines put it in context. The line for Saturn in Pisces (Sl. 23-24) and the one for Saturn in Taurus (Sl. 3-4) show how much the chapter's verdict moves from one sign to the next.

Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 25-30: the aspect lines

Saravali then reads Saturn in a sign of Mars (Aries or Scorpio) under the aspect of each other planet. These lines usually decide more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:

  • Aspected by the Sun: interest in agriculture, great affluence, cattle and horses, good fortune and industry.
  • Aspected by the Moon: a fickle mind, base company, and neither happiness nor wealth.
  • Aspected by Mars: one of the harshest lines in the chapter - violence, leadership of robbers - though it adds "famous".
  • Aspected by Mercury: untruthfulness, overeating, theft, and neither happiness nor riches.
  • Aspected by Jupiter: happiness, wealth and fortune, a minister of a king and a chief.
  • Aspected by Venus: an unsteady disposition, an ugly appearance, courtesans, and few pleasures.

Only the Sun and Jupiter lines read well. Jupiter, which Bhrigu Sutras makes neutral to Saturn, gives the best of the six. The chapter has no line for Saturn aspecting itself, and it does not say how the aspect is to be counted; the worked example below uses this app's rule.

BPHS

BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Saturn. What it says about Saturn in Aries comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 forms Sasa Yoga only from Saturn's own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Saturn in Aries never forms it, whatever the Lagna.

Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60, on the effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, lists a Saturn in its debilitation sign among the conditions for a difficult period - and in the same breath says a Saturn aspected by or joined with a benefic, or in a Kendra or trikona, gives better results. So the text itself qualifies its own verdict on the debilitated Saturn. Timing has its own page: Saturn Mahadasha.

Bhrigu Sutras

The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras makes a general remark that bears on this sign: Saturn is "beneficial" in its own sign, in the signs of Jupiter and when exalted. Aries is not one of them, and the text does not single it out either way.

The commentary on the house chapters names several Lagna-by-Lagna cases where Saturn's placement is read as favourable; none of them puts Saturn in Aries.

Where the texts agree, and where they part

  • Agreed: the dignity scheme - exaltation in Libra deepest at 20 degrees, debilitation in Aries, own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, Moolatrikona in the first 20 degrees of Aquarius (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Bhrigu Sutras).
  • Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali turns the verdict on the aspecting planet; BPHS on the house, combustion and the dasha conditions; Bhrigu Sutras on the Lagna and the houses Saturn rules.
  • Qualified: BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 lists debilitation among the difficult dasha conditions but immediately adds benefic aspect and a Kendra or trikona position as mitigating. The texts do not treat the debilitated Saturn as a closed verdict.

What Saturn rules from each Lagna, with Saturn in Aries

Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so from any Lagna it rules two neighbouring houses. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical: the second column is where Saturn sits, the third what it rules. The house pages, such as Saturn in the 1st house and Saturn in the 7th house, take each case further.

How often Saturn is in Aries

Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Saturn was in Aries in 267 of them, 8.9 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share is uneven from sign to sign because Saturn's stays are long and do not divide the 75 years evenly: in the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, UTC), Saturn's stays in Aries were:

The transit reading of the same sign - Saturn moving through it now, counted from your Moon - is a different subject with its own page: Saturn transit in Aries.

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Cancer rises at 4.97 degrees. Saturn is at 1.14 degrees of Aries, in Ashwini pada 1, in the 10th house, not retrograde and combust. At 1.14 degrees it falls in the Debilitated band, so the engine labels it Debilitated; no other planet's position enters the calculation.

Lordship. For a Cancer Lagna, Capricorn is the 7th house and Aquarius the 8th, so Saturn rules the 7th and the 8th and sits in the 10th. Saturn is also combust here - within the engine's 15-degree orb of the Sun - and combustion is one of the difficult conditions BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 lists. The 10th is a Kendra, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 counts in Saturn's favour, so the text's own conditions pull both ways in this chart.

Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 10th here, so none of the Sl. 25-30 lines applies and only the bare sign line does. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.

Company. Sun (12.95), Moon (23.62), Mars (16.7) share Aries with Saturn. Saravali's Ch. 29 lines are about aspect, not conjunction, so this page does not add a reading for the company that the text does not give.

Checking Saturn in Aries in your own chart

  1. Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Saturn is in Aries and read its dignity label.
  2. Note the house Aries occupies, and the houses Capricorn and Aquarius occupy: those are where Saturn sits and what it rules.
  3. Note whether Saturn is in a Kendra, a trikona or a dusthana: BPHS Ch. 47 uses all three in its dasha conditions.
  4. List the planets that aspect Aries: any graha in the 7th sign from it, Mars in the sign 4 or 8 places before it, Jupiter in the sign 5 or 9 places before it. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 25-30 line into play.
  5. Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.

What this page does not do

It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.

Is Saturn in Aries exalted?
No. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. In Aries the engine labels it Debilitated. See Saturn in Libra.
Does debilitated Saturn in Aries mean a bad chart?
No. BPHS itself qualifies the debilitated Saturn in the same sloka that names it (Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60), the cancellation rules of neecha bhanga exist precisely for this case, and one placement describes one part of a chart. This page reports rules; it does not grade lives.
Can another planet change the dignity of Saturn in Aries?
No. For Saturn in Aries the engine's first four tests always answer, so the friendship test is never reached. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 25-30, but not the label.
Does Saturn in Aries give Sasa Yoga?
No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Saturn in its own or exaltation sign, and Aries is neither.
Which aspect matters most for Saturn in Aries in Saravali?
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 25-30 gives six lines, one per aspecting planet. Only the Sun and Jupiter lines read well.
How common is Saturn in Aries?
In this app's sample it was in Aries in 267 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.9 per cent. Because Saturn stays in a sign for long stretches, the births with this placement cluster in particular years.
Does this page say what will happen to me?
No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the aspects and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
