In short
Saturn in Libra is Saturn exalted: BPHS puts its exaltation in Libra, deepest at 20 degrees, and this engine labels the whole sign Exalted. Saravali reads it as wealth, honour and gracious speech, and in a Kendra from the Lagna it forms Sasa Yoga.
Saturn in Libra is Saturn in its sign of exaltation. That label is fixed by the sign and degree alone. What the placement means is a separate question, and the classical texts answer it through the aspects on Saturn, the house Libra occupies in your chart and the houses Saturn rules from your Lagna.
This page covers only the combination. For Saturn as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Saturn in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its nature, its nakshatras and what a rising Libra means - see Libra, Tula Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Saturn in Libra specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Saturn in Libra: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Saturn (Shani) its exaltation in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20 degrees, and its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, Mesha (Aries), at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 adds that Saturn's arrangement in Kumbha (Aquarius) is the same as the Sun's in Simha: the first 20 degrees Moolatrikona, the rest its own house. The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats all of this and adds that the whole of Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, that Mercury and Venus are its friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, and Jupiter neutral. The terms have their own entries: uchcha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation), Moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).
So Saturn in Libra is Saturn exalted, the mirror of Saturn in Aries. This app's engine labels it Exalted across the whole sign, from 0 to 30 degrees; unlike Mercury, Saturn has no cut-off inside its exaltation sign in the engine's table. The texts single out 20 degrees as the deepest point, but the label is the same at 3 degrees as at 20.
| Degrees of Libra | Label without a chart (engine-facts) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |

How the engine decides
The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the fivefold relation with the sign's lord. For Saturn in Libra one of the first four tests always answers, so no other planet's position can change the label. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the steps in the same order but puts Moolatrikona a quarter below exaltation, where the engine scores them equally.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 gives the same ladder a name for each step. A graha in its exaltation sign is in Dipt avastha, in its own sign Swasth. For Saturn in Libra that is Dipt. Sl. 11-18 adds that a graha in exaltation or Moolatrikona is also Garvit.
The nakshatras Saturn moves through in Libra
Libra holds padas 3, 4 of Chitra; all four padas of Swati; and padas 1, 2, 3 of Vishakha. The deepest point of exaltation the texts name, 20 degrees of Libra, is exactly where Swati ends and Vishakha begins. The nakshatra pages go further: Chitra, Swati and Vishakha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Libra | Degrees of Libra | Saturn's label there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chitra | 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 6 degrees 40 minutes | Exalted |
| Swati | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees | Exalted |
| Vishakha | 1, 2, 3 | 20 degrees to 30 degrees | Exalted |
What the classical texts say about Saturn in Libra
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 13-14
Saravali's chapter on Saturn in the twelve signs gives Libra one line. In paraphrase it reads: wealth, soft speech, money and honours from foreign countries, the standing of a king or a scholar, wealth guarded by relatives, seniority in one's circle and high status won by gracious speech in an assembly; it closes with a remark about the company of dancers and courtesans. Like every line in the chapter it describes a type, not a person, and it is a single text's view.
The neighbouring lines put it in context. The line for Saturn in Virgo (Sl. 11-12) and the one for Saturn in Scorpio (Sl. 15-16) are set against one of the more favourable lines in the chapter.
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Saturn in a sign of Venus (Taurus or Libra) under the aspect of each other planet. These lines usually decide more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:
- Aspected by the Sun: clear speech and scholarship, but loss of wealth, eating in others' houses and a weak constitution.
- Aspected by the Moon: wealth through women, honour from a king's ministers, affection and family.
- Aspected by Mars: skill in preparing for war while staying away from it, much talk, wealth and family.
- Aspected by Mercury: a joking disposition, service to women, and the word "base".
- Aspected by Jupiter: sharing the joys and sorrows of others, doing others' work, being dear to people, charitable and industrious.
- Aspected by Venus: enjoyment, gems, great strength, and favour with the king.
The tone is mostly mild in this group: four of the six lines grant wealth, family or favour, and only the Sun and Mercury lines read poorly. Venus, a natural friend of Saturn, aspecting its own sign reads as the most affluent. The chapter has no line for Saturn aspecting itself, and it does not say how the aspect is to be counted; the worked example below uses this app's rule.
BPHS and Saravali on Sasa Yoga
BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Saturn. What it says about Saturn in Libra comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: when Shani is in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra from the Lagna it forms Sasa, one of the five Panchmahapurusha yogas; Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 states the same condition. Saturn in Libra therefore forms Sasa Yoga only for the four Lagnas that put Libra in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house. For the other eight Lagnas the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent. Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 8-10 then describes the Sasa native at length, a mix of praise (valour, fame, command, skill in every assignment, intelligence) and less flattering remarks.
Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56, on the effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, lists a Saturn in its exaltation, own sign or Moolatrikona among the conditions for a favourable period; Saturn in Libra meets one of them. Sl. 57-60 lists the opposite conditions - a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or combust - which can apply to the same Saturn, so the dignity alone does not settle the dasha reading. Timing has its own page: Saturn Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras
The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras makes a general remark that bears on this sign: Saturn is "beneficial" in its own sign, in the signs of Jupiter and when exalted. Libra is one of those signs.
In its first-house sutras (Ch. 7 Sutras 1-7), Bhrigu Sutras says a Saturn in the Lagna in its sign of exaltation, Libra, gives lordship over a village or town and financial and agricultural prosperity; the commentator adds that for a Libra Lagna Saturn rules the 4th and 5th, which he calls yoga-karaka. See Saturn in the 1st house.
The commentary on the house chapters goes further and names Lagna-by-Lagna cases where Saturn's placement is read as favourable. Those that put Saturn in Libra are:
- Virgo Lagna, Saturn in the 2nd: exalted in the 2nd as lord of the 5th (and the 6th, which the commentator calls a blemish); read as well off financially (Saturn in the 2nd house).
- Aquarius Lagna, Saturn in the 9th: exalted in the 9th as lord of the 1st; "very favourable results" (Saturn in the 9th house).
- Capricorn Lagna, Saturn in the 10th: exalted lord of the 1st and 2nd in the 10th; "as powerful a disposition as a Raja yoga" (Saturn in the 10th house).
- Sagittarius Lagna, Saturn in the 11th: exalted in the 11th as lord of the 2nd; a very powerful Dhana yoga (Saturn in the 11th house).
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: the dignity scheme - exaltation in Libra deepest at 20 degrees, debilitation in Aries, own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, Moolatrikona in the first 20 degrees of Aquarius (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Bhrigu Sutras).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali turns the verdict on the aspecting planet; BPHS on the house, combustion and the dasha conditions; Bhrigu Sutras on the Lagna and the houses Saturn rules.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Saturn in Libra as such. Saravali is the only text in the corpus that writes one.
What Saturn rules from each Lagna, with Saturn in Libra
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so from any Lagna it rules two neighbouring houses. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical: the second column is where Saturn sits, the third what it rules. The house pages, such as Saturn in the 7th house and Saturn in the 1st house, take each case further.

How often Saturn is in Libra
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Saturn was in Libra in 219 of them, 7.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share is uneven from sign to sign because Saturn's stays are long and do not divide the 75 years evenly: in the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, UTC), Saturn's stays in Libra were:
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 15 November 2011 | 14 May 2012 |
| 5 August 2012 | 2 November 2014 |
| 26 September 2041 | 12 December 2043 |
| 20 June 2044 | 31 August 2044 |
The transit reading of the same sign - Saturn moving through it now, counted from your Moon - is a different subject with its own page: Saturn transit in Libra.
Worked example: 5 June 1985, 02:29 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Pisces rises at 27.77 degrees. Saturn is at 29.71 degrees of Libra, in Vishakha pada 3, in the 8th house, retrograde and not combust. At 29.71 degrees it falls in the Exalted band, so the engine labels it Exalted; no other planet's position enters the calculation.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Taurus 20.51 | Rohini (4) | 3 | Neutral |
| Moon | Sagittarius 13.77 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 3.31 | Mrigashira (3) | 4 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Taurus 17.17 | Rohini (3) | 3 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 23.36 | Dhanishta (1) | 11 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Aries 5.02 | Ashwini (2) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Libra 29.71, retrograde | Vishakha (3) | 8 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 23.3 | Bharani (3) | 2 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 23.3 | Vishakha (1) | 8 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Pisces Lagna, Capricorn is the 11th house and Aquarius the 12th, so Saturn rules the 11th and the 12th and sits in the 8th. The 8th is not a Kendra, so by BPHS Ch. 75 there is no Sasa Yoga despite the dignity. The 8th is a dusthana, one of the houses BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 lists among the difficult conditions for Saturn's dasha.
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - Venus (in the 2nd) aspects the 8th. So the Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36 line that applies is: aspected by Venus, enjoyment, gems, great strength, and favour with the king.
Company. Ketu (23.3) shares Libra with Saturn. Saravali's Ch. 29 lines are about aspect, not conjunction, so this page does not add a reading for the company that the text does not give.
Any reader can re-enter this birth - the date, the time in IST and New Delhi as the place - in the Birth Chart calculator and get the same positions.
Checking Saturn in Libra in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Saturn is in Libra and read its dignity label.
- Note the house Libra occupies, and the houses Capricorn and Aquarius occupy: those are where Saturn sits and what it rules.
- If Libra is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, check the Yogas list for Sasa.
- List the planets that aspect Libra: any graha in the 7th sign from it, Mars in the sign 4 or 8 places before it, Jupiter in the sign 5 or 9 places before it. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Saturn in Libra exalted?
- Yes. Libra is Saturn's exaltation sign in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 and in Bhrigu Sutras, deepest at 20 degrees, and this engine labels the whole sign Exalted.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Saturn in Libra?
- No. For Saturn in Libra the engine's first four tests always answer, so the friendship test is never reached. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36, but not the label.
- Does Saturn in Libra give Sasa Yoga?
- Only for Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn Lagnas, which put Libra in a Kendra. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs both the dignity and the Kendra.
- Which aspect matters most for Saturn in Libra in Saravali?
- Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36 gives six lines, one per aspecting planet. The tone is mostly mild in this group: four of the six lines grant wealth, family or favour, and only the Sun and Mercury lines read poorly.
- How common is Saturn in Libra?
- In this app's sample it was in Libra in 219 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.3 per cent. Because Saturn stays in a sign for long stretches, the births with this placement cluster in particular years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the aspects and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
