In short
In this app's computation Saturn is next in sidereal Libra, its exaltation sign, from 26 September 2041 to 12 December 2043, and again from 20 June to 31 August 2044. Exaltation does not change the Gochara count: it is Sade Sati for Scorpio, Libra and Virgo Moons, Ashtama Sani for Pisces and Ardha Ashtama Sani for Cancer.
Libra is Saturn's exaltation sign. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 lists Tula as Saturn's exaltation with the deepest point at 20 degrees, and the engine labels Saturn "Exalted" across the whole sign. The sign, in BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 15-16, is Venus's: it rises with its head, is strong by day and Rajasic. Many readers assume an exalted Saturn must be a gentler transit. In this app's Gochara rule it is not, and the reason is worth setting out. For the graha see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the sign, Libra, Tula rashi.
The page gives dates and rules only; it does not forecast. The Gochar calculator applies the rule to your own Moon.
When Saturn is in Libra: the ingress dates
Four stays between 1990 and 2050, two per passage. The earlier passage loops at its start and the later one at its end.
| Enters Libra (UTC) | Leaves Libra (UTC) | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| 15 November 2011 | 14 May 2012 | Retrograde back into Virgo |
| 5 August 2012 | 2 November 2014 | Moves on into Scorpio |
| 26 September 2041 | 12 December 2043 | Into Scorpio, then retrograde back |
| 20 June 2044 | 31 August 2044 | Into Scorpio for the rest of the passage |
In 2011 Saturn entered Libra for six months, fell back into Virgo for about three, then held Libra from August 2012 to November 2014. In the 2040s the long stay comes first, from September 2041 to December 2043; Saturn then spends six months in Scorpio and returns to Libra for about ten weeks in mid-2044.
Each return is retrograde motion (vakri). The Gochar calculator shows Saturn's degree in the sign and the retrograde flag; the deepest exaltation point at 20 degrees of Libra is crossed during the long stay.
Libra counted from your Moon: the house and the verdict
Gochara (glossary) counts from the natal Moon sign. The engine's verdicts for Saturn: 1st, 8th, 12th testing and most intense; 4th testing; 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 11th favourable; 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th neutral. These do not change with Saturn's dignity.
| Natal Moon sign | Libra is the | Gochara verdict | Engine note (shortened) | Named Saturn period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 7th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Taurus | 6th | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Gemini | 5th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Cancer | 4th | Testing | Among the bad positions; steadiness over new commitments | Ardha Ashtama Sani |
| Leo | 3rd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Virgo | 2nd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | Sade Sati, setting phase |
| Libra | 1st | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, peak phase |
| Scorpio | 12th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, rising phase |
| Sagittarius | 11th | Favourable | The 11th is favourable for every transiting planet | - |
| Capricorn | 10th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Aquarius | 9th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Pisces | 8th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Ashtama Sani |
Libra is the 10th from Capricorn: "neutral" in the engine, "a period of gain" in Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 311). Capricorn being Saturn's own sign plays no part in either. For your Moon sign use the Moon sign calculator; for why the Moon is the base, Moon sign and nakshatra.
Why exaltation does not soften the verdict here
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 gives a ratio of effects - an exalted graha "gives fully good effects", an own-sign graha half, and so on. That passage is about a planet's strength in a chart. The Gochara rule the engine applies is a separate rule about houses from the Moon, and it does not take dignity as an input. Advanced Predictive Astrology's exception to Sade Sati is also about the birth chart, not the transit sign: Sade Sati does not apply, it says, when Saturn is a yogakaraka for that chart, well placed and with benefic association. So an exalted transiting Saturn in the 12th from your Moon is, by this app's rule, still the rising phase of Sade Sati. The uchcha glossary entry and Saturn in Libra cover the natal side.
Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Ardha Ashtama Sani with Saturn in Libra
- Scorpio Moon: Libra is the 12th, the rising phase, from 26 September 2041.
- Libra Moon: the peak phase, Saturn exalted over the natal Moon sign. The engine raises its "intensified" flag for the 1st from the Moon regardless.
- Virgo Moon: the setting phase. It runs to 12 December 2043, and again from 20 June to 31 August 2044.
- Pisces Moon: Libra is the 8th, Ashtama Sani - the worked example.
- Cancer Moon: Libra is the 4th, Ardha Ashtama Sani.
Advanced Predictive Astrology's North Indian list (p. 312) marks the last two and a half years as heavier for Libra, the last five years for Scorpio, and the first two and a half for Virgo. It is reported, not computed. See the Sade Sati calculator, the Sade Sati page and the glossary entry for the rule this app uses.
How long Saturn spends in Libra, and the nakshatras it crosses
From the engine's timestamps, the 2011-2014 passage put Saturn in Libra for 1,001 days (181 and 820), and the 2041-2044 passage for 879 (807 and 72). The 913 days shown by the calculator is a single average used for every sign.
In the engine's table Libra holds padas 3-4 of Chitra, all of Swati and padas 1-3 of Vishakha. The calculator's degree readout shows where Saturn is; the whole-sign Gochara rule does not depend on it, though Advanced Predictive Astrology's 45-degree Sade Sati boundary would.
What the classical texts say
There is no transit reading for Saturn in Libra in the BPHS or Saravali text held here. Advanced Predictive Astrology adds a rule that is not about the sign but about Saturn's own natal position: it says important events usually come when transiting Saturn forms an exact opposition to where Saturn was at birth (p. 313). Anyone born with Saturn in Aries, its debilitation sign, meets that opposition during a Libra transit. The engine does not compute this rule; it is reported as the book's.
The sign itself: Venus's air sign and Saturn's exaltation
Libra is ruled by Venus, a friend of Saturn, and is Saturn's exaltation sign by BPHS. Its seventh, Aries, is Saturn's fall. These two facts make Libra the strongest sign for Saturn in a natal chart. They do not enter the Gochara verdict, which is identical in form for all twelve signs.
Worked example: a Pisces Moon and Ashtama Sani in the 2040s
Take a natal Moon in Pisces. Libra is the 8th from it; Virgo the 7th; Scorpio the 9th.
- 14 July 2039 to 26 September 2041: Saturn in Virgo, the 7th - "neutral".
- 26 September 2041 to 12 December 2043: Libra, the 8th - Ashtama Sani, Gochara "testing", with Saturn exalted.
- 12 December 2043 to 20 June 2044: Scorpio, the 9th - "neutral".
- 20 June 2044 to 31 August 2044: Libra again - Ashtama Sani for about ten weeks.
- From 31 August 2044: Scorpio, the 9th, until 8 December 2046.
So a Pisces Moon meets Ashtama Sani during Saturn's strongest sign. The engine still says "testing"; the exaltation is relevant only if one moves to a natal-chart reading. Advanced Predictive Astrology's Varahamihira quotation on the 8th is harsh, and this app does not adopt it. The dasha in force is the other half - a Saturn Mahadasha and a Jupiter period, Jupiter being Pisces's lord, are different contexts.
Neighbouring signs: Saturn transit in Virgo and Saturn transit in Scorpio. Other slow transits through Libra: Jupiter transit in Libra and Rahu transit in Libra.
- When is Saturn next in Libra?
- From 26 September 2041 to 12 December 2043, and from 20 June to 31 August 2044 (UTC), in this app's computation.
- Is an exalted Saturn transit good for everyone?
- Not by this app's rule. The Gochara verdict depends on the house from your Moon, not on Saturn's dignity, so an exalted Saturn can still be Sade Sati or Ashtama Sani for some Moon signs.
- Which Moon signs are in Sade Sati with Saturn in Libra?
- Scorpio (rising, Libra is the 12th), Libra (peak) and Virgo (setting, the 2nd).
- When was Saturn last in Libra?
- From 15 November 2011 to 14 May 2012, and from 5 August 2012 to 2 November 2014.
- Who gets a favourable verdict?
- Taurus, Leo, Virgo and Sagittarius Moons. Testing: Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Pisces. Neutral: the rest. See the Gochar calculator.
- Does an exalted Saturn change who is in Sade Sati?
- No. Sade Sati in this app is the whole-sign rule: Saturn in the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from the natal Moon. Exaltation is not part of that test. Advanced Predictive Astrology's exception depends on Saturn being a yogakaraka and well placed in the birth chart, which is a property of the natal chart and has to be read there, not from the transit sign.
