In short
In this app's computation Jupiter is next in sidereal Libra from 25 December 2028 to 29 March 2029, from 24 August 2029 to 24 January 2030, and from 1 May to 22 September 2030 (UTC). Its last full stay was 11 September 2017 to 11 October 2018. From the Moon it is favourable for Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius Moons.
Libra (Tula) is the seventh sign, airy and movable, ruled by Venus. Jupiter reaching Libra means it has crossed to the far side of the zodiac from Aries, where its circuit began. This page lists the dates of Jupiter's stays in Libra as this app computes them and gives the engine's reading for each Moon sign. For the graha, see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the sign, Libra, Tula rashi.
A transit reading is a rule about positions; it does not tell anyone what will happen. For your own Moon on a date you choose, use the Gochar calculator.
Dates: when Jupiter is in Libra
Every stay of Jupiter in sidereal Libra beginning between 1990 and 2050. Each row is a continuous interval.
| Enters Libra (UTC) | Leaves Libra (UTC) | Then |
|---|---|---|
| 12 October 1993 | 11 November 1994 | Into Scorpio |
| 27 September 2005 | 27 October 2006 | Into Scorpio |
| 11 September 2017 | 11 October 2018 | Into Scorpio |
| 25 December 2028 | 29 March 2029 | Retrograde back into Virgo |
| 24 August 2029 | 24 January 2030 | Into Scorpio, then retrograde back |
| 1 May 2030 | 22 September 2030 | Into Scorpio |
| 3 December 2040 | 6 May 2041 | Retrograde back into Virgo |
| 31 July 2041 | 2 January 2042 | Into Scorpio, then retrograde back |
| 9 June 2042 | 28 August 2042 | Into Scorpio |
Libra's history in this window divides cleanly at 2018. The 1993-94, 2005-06 and 2017-18 passages each lasted about thirteen months in one piece, entering in the autumn and leaving a year and a month later. The 2028-30 passage arrives on Christmas Day 2028 (UTC; 23:29, already 26 December in India), retreats into Virgo on 29 March 2029, returns on 24 August 2029, goes ahead into Scorpio on 24 January 2030, and has a last Libra stretch from 1 May to 22 September 2030. The three stretches add up to about thirteen months spread over about twenty-one.
The 2040-42 passage has the same three-part shape but a shorter tail: its final stretch, 9 June to 28 August 2042, is under three months. At boundaries like these the calculator's degree-in-sign and vakri (retrograde) flag show where Jupiter sits in its loop; the "about 365 days" duration the calculator prints is the classical average for any sign.
Counted from your Moon: the house Libra is for each sign
The Gochara count starts at the natal Moon sign. Jupiter takes the benefic rule: 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th favourable; 11th favourable for every planet; 3rd and 6th indifferent; 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th testing.
| Natal Moon sign | Libra is the | Gochara verdict | Engine note (shortened) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 7th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Taurus | 6th | Neutral | A classically indifferent position |
| Gemini | 5th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Cancer | 4th | Testing | Listed among the bad positions for every planet; steadiness over new commitments |
| Leo | 3rd | Neutral | A classically indifferent position; also flagged "intensified" |
| Virgo | 2nd | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Libra | 1st | Testing | More testing even for a natural benefic |
| Scorpio | 12th | Testing | More testing even for a natural benefic |
| Sagittarius | 11th | Favourable | The 11th is favourable for every transiting planet |
| Capricorn | 10th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Aquarius | 9th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Pisces | 8th | Testing | More testing even for a natural benefic |
Two of the testing rows are Jupiter's own Pisces (Libra is its 8th) and the Cancer of its exaltation (Libra is its 4th). The 4th is a case the engine's code corrected: its source lists the 4th among the bad positions for benefics and malefics alike, so the engine now marks it "testing" where it once fell through to neutral. For a Sagittarius Moon - the other Jupiter-ruled sign - Libra is the 11th, favourable for every planet. Your Moon sign, if you need it: Moon sign calculator; the term itself: Moon sign.
During the split 2028-30 passage the verdict changes whenever Jupiter crosses a boundary, for any Moon sign whose verdicts differ on the two sides. A Virgo Moon is one: Virgo itself is its 1st ("testing"), Libra its 2nd ("favourable"), so its verdict changes at every one of the six boundary crossings (Scorpio, its 3rd, is "neutral"). A Sagittarius Moon goes from Libra (11th, "favourable") to Scorpio (12th, "testing") in January 2030 and back in May.
What the classical texts say
In this library neither BPHS nor Saravali reads Jupiter's transit through Libra. The general statements come from Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, "Research on Transits" (pp. 310-311):
- Jupiter "gives good results in 2/5/7/9/11th" from the Moon: for Libra, the Virgo, Gemini, Aries, Aquarius and Sagittarius Moons. The engine also counts the 10th (Capricorn); the book does not.
- Jupiter over the Moon sign is "said to induct a sense of fear and anxiety": the Libra Moon.
- Jyotish-Tattvam (Vol. I, Ch. X, Vs. 25-26), as quoted, connects Jupiter in the 5th with the birth of a child: the Gemini Moon.
- A Tamil palm-leaf reading lists Jupiter in the 3rd from the Moon among positions that "will produce intensified" results: the Leo Moon, flagged by the calculator.
- The book also says that when transit Jupiter aspects certain natal planets, Venus and Mars among them, "it signs the wedding bells". That rule is read from natal planets, not from the Moon sign, and the engine's Gochara verdict does not include it.
The sign itself: Venus's airy sign
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 15-16 describes Tula as rising with its head, strong in the daytime, Rajasic, of the western direction, a biped sign of medium build, with Sukr as its lord. As in Taurus, Venus's other sign, the engine labels Jupiter in Libra an enemy-sign placement across all 30 degrees. In Libra, Jupiter crosses the last two padas of Chitra, all of Swati and the first three padas of Vishakha, whose last pada lies in Scorpio. The natal placement: Jupiter in Libra.
The enemy-sign label and the Gochara verdict answer different questions. The label describes Jupiter's own condition in Libra and is the same for every reader; the verdict depends on where Libra falls from a particular Moon. An Aries Moon gets "favourable" from an enemy-sign Jupiter in its 7th, and a Cancer Moon gets "testing" from the same Jupiter in its 4th.
Worked example: a Gemini Moon through 2028-30
Take a natal Moon in Gemini. Libra is its 5th sign; Virgo, the 4th; Scorpio, the 6th. Following the split passage:
- 24 July to 25 December 2028: Virgo, the 4th - "testing".
- 25 December 2028 to 29 March 2029: Libra, the 5th - "favourable".
- 29 March to 24 August 2029: Virgo again - "testing".
- 24 August 2029 to 24 January 2030: Libra - "favourable".
- 24 January to 1 May 2030: Scorpio, the 6th - "neutral".
- 1 May to 22 September 2030: Libra - "favourable".
- From 22 September 2030: Scorpio - "neutral".
Each of the three Libra stretches is favourable for this Moon, and each is bracketed by testing or indifferent stays. The 5th is also the house the quoted Jyotish-Tattvam verse associates with children. The example is an exercise in reading the table, not a statement about anyone with a Gemini Moon; the classical method reads a transit together with the running dasha, such as the Jupiter Mahadasha, and the Gochar calculator gives one date's verdict.
Before and after this passage: Jupiter transit in Virgo and Jupiter transit in Scorpio. Saturn through Libra, where Saturn is exalted: Saturn transit in Libra.
- When is Jupiter next in Libra?
- In this app's computation, from 25 December 2028 to 29 March 2029, 24 August 2029 to 24 January 2030, and 1 May to 22 September 2030 (UTC). The first entry is 23:29 UTC on 25 December, which is 26 December in India.
- When was Jupiter last in Libra?
- From 11 September 2017 to 11 October 2018, in one continuous stay.
- Is Jupiter in Libra good for my Moon sign?
- The engine reads it as favourable for Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius Moons, testing for Cancer, Libra, Scorpio and Pisces, and neutral for Taurus and Leo. Check yours in the Gochar calculator.
- Which Moon sign is flagged "intensified" while Jupiter is in Libra?
- Leo, because Libra is the 3rd sign from Leo and the calculator pairs Jupiter with the 3rd from the Moon in its "intensified" list. The verdict for a Leo Moon remains "neutral"; the flag is reported beside it, not in place of it.
- Do the short Libra stretches carry the same verdicts as the long ones?
- Yes. The verdict depends only on which sign Jupiter occupies and which house that is from your Moon, so the three-month stretch from 25 December 2028 reads exactly like the five-month stretches that follow. Between them the Virgo or Scorpio verdicts apply.
- Is Jupiter weak in Libra?
- The engine labels Libra an enemy sign for Jupiter, because Venus rules it. It is not a debilitation, which for Jupiter is Capricorn. The Gochara verdict ignores dignity.
- Why might another source show different dates?
- Different ayanamsas, planetary models and time zones. This app quotes UTC and may differ from other software by hours to a day or two near an ingress.
