Jupiter transit in Scorpio: the dates, and the house it falls in for each Moon sign

Scorpio (Vrishchika) is Mars's watery, fixed sign, and it is the last sign Jupiter crosses before reaching its own Sagittarius. Mars counts as Jupiter's friend, so the engine treats this as a friendly-sign transit. Below are the dates as this app computes them and the engine's reading for each Moon sign. Dates: when Jupiter is in Scorpio

Every stay of Jupiter in sidereal Scorpio beginning between 1990 and 2050, retrograde returns as separate rows.

The 2018-19 passage is the transition between the old pattern and the new one. It is nearly a clean year - 11 October 2018 to 4 November 2019 - except that Jupiter pushed ahead into Sagittarius on 28 March 2019 and backed out again on 24 April, a stay of under four weeks. A reader who remembers "Jupiter in Scorpio for 2018-19" is mostly right, but those four weeks in spring 2019 were Sagittarius.

The two passages before it show where the change comes from. Jupiter entered Scorpio on 11 November 1994, then on 27 October 2006, then on 11 October 2018 - about two weeks earlier each cycle - and both of the earlier passages ran as single blocks of a little over a year, ending on 7 December 1995 and 21 November 2007. By 2018 the earlier entry had brought Jupiter's spring retrograde loop close enough to the Scorpio-Sagittarius boundary to clip it. By 2030 the loops fall across both boundaries, and the passage splits into three.

The next passage is fully broken up: a first visit from 24 January to 1 May 2030, the main stay from 22 September 2030 to 17 February 2031, and a last stretch from 13 June to 15 October 2031. The 2042-43 passage repeats that shape, ending with a six-week tail from 30 July to 11 September 2043. Near any boundary, the calculator's degree-in-sign and vakri (retrograde) flag show which side Jupiter is on; its "about 365 days" duration is the classical average for a sign.

Counted from your Moon: the house Scorpio is for each sign

For Gochara, count from the natal Moon sign to Scorpio. The engine reads Jupiter with the benefic rule: favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th; favourable in the 11th for every planet; indifferent in the 3rd and 6th; testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th.

The two Mars-ruled Moon signs come out on opposite sides: a Scorpio Moon has Jupiter over it (1st, "testing"), and an Aries Moon has it in the 8th, also "testing". Jupiter's own signs split as well - the 12th from a Sagittarius Moon is "testing", the 9th from a Pisces Moon "favourable". The Capricorn row is the one where Jupiter, debilitated in Capricorn, is favourable for that Moon simply because Scorpio is its 11th. The four-week Sagittarius dip of spring 2019 is a small example of why dates matter. For a Capricorn Moon, Scorpio is the 11th ("favourable") and Sagittarius the 12th ("testing"), so the verdict changed on 28 March 2019 and changed back on 24 April. For a Libra Moon, Scorpio is the 2nd and Sagittarius the 3rd: favourable, then indifferent, then favourable again.

What the classical texts say

BPHS and Saravali in this library give no reading for Jupiter transiting Scorpio. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, "Research on Transits" (pp. 310-311), reports the general rules:

• Jupiter "gives good results in 2/5/7/9/11th" from the Moon: for Scorpio, the Libra, Cancer, Taurus, Pisces and Capricorn Moons. The engine also counts the 10th (Aquarius); the book does not.
• Jupiter over the Moon sign is "said to induct a sense of fear and anxiety": the Scorpio Moon.
• Jyotish-Tattvam (Vol. I, Ch. X, Vs. 25-26), as quoted, associates Jupiter's transit of the 5th with the birth of a child: here the Cancer Moon.
• A Tamil palm-leaf reading lists Jupiter in the 3rd from the Moon among positions that "will produce intensified" results: the Virgo Moon, which the calculator flags.
• Transit Jupiter "just over its radical position or from a trine" is read as bringing "cheer and happiness to the mind". Someone born with Jupiter in Scorpio has that return during this passage, and someone with natal Jupiter in Cancer or Pisces has the trine. That reading needs the natal Jupiter, not the Moon.

The sign itself: Mars's watery sign

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 16 describes Vrischik as slender, a centipede sign that "resides in holes", of the northern direction, strong in the daytime, reddish-brown, and "very sharp (or passionate)", with Mangal as its ruler. The engine marks Jupiter here as in a friendly sign throughout, the same label it gives in Mars's other sign, Aries. Worked example: a Cancer Moon through 2017-20

Take a natal Moon in Cancer. Scorpio is its 5th sign, Libra its 4th, Sagittarius its 6th. Reading the most recent passage, with the neighbouring sign runs:

1. 1.11 September 2017 to 11 October 2018: Libra, the 4th - "testing".
2. 2.11 October 2018 to 28 March 2019: Scorpio, the 5th - "favourable".
3. 3.28 March to 24 April 2019: Sagittarius, the 6th - "neutral".
4. 4.24 April to 4 November 2019: Scorpio again - "favourable".
5. 5.4 November 2019 to 29 March 2020: Sagittarius - "neutral".

For this Moon the Scorpio year is the favourable stretch after a testing Libra year, with a four-week indifferent break inside it. The 5th is also the house the quoted Jyotish-Tattvam verse ties to children. That is all the example establishes. Almost. It entered on 11 October 2018 and left on 4 November 2019, but was in Sagittarius from 28 March to 24 April 2019.
