In short
In this app's computation Jupiter is next in sidereal Sagittarius, its own sign, from 17 February to 13 June 2031, from 15 October 2031 to 5 March 2032, and from 12 August to 23 October 2032 (UTC). It was last there in 2019-20. From the Moon it is favourable for Aries, Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces Moons.
Sagittarius (Dhanu) is one of the two signs Jupiter rules, and the engine treats its first ten degrees as Jupiter's moolatrikona. A Jupiter transit through Sagittarius is therefore the planet passing through its own ground. The page gives the dates of that transit as this app computes them and the engine's Gochara reading for each Moon sign. The graha: Jupiter in Vedic astrology. The sign: Sagittarius, Dhanu rashi.
Being in its own sign does not make the transit favourable for every reader; the verdict depends on the house from your Moon. The Gochar calculator applies the rule to your own Moon on any date.
Dates: when Jupiter is in Sagittarius
Every stay of Jupiter in sidereal Sagittarius beginning between 1990 and 2050. Retrograde returns are separate rows.

| 30 June 2020 | 20 November 2020 | Into Capricorn |
| 17 February 2031 | 13 June 2031 | Retrograde back into Scorpio |
| 15 October 2031 | 5 March 2032 | Into Capricorn, then retrograde back |

| 11 September 2043 | 16 February 2044 | Into Capricorn |
The 2019-20 passage shows how a split transit reads in practice. Jupiter first touched Sagittarius for under four weeks in spring 2019 (28 March to 24 April), retreated into Scorpio, returned on 4 November 2019, moved ahead into Capricorn on 29 March 2020, and came back for a last stretch from 30 June to 20 November 2020. The 30 June re-entry is at 01:53 UTC, which is already the morning of 30 June in India.
The two earlier passages were simple by comparison: 7 December 1995 to 25 December 1996, and 21 November 2007 to 9 December 2008, each a single stay of about thirteen months. Their entry dates fell about two weeks earlier per cycle, and by 2019 Jupiter was reaching the sign in March, close enough to its retrograde season that the loop pulled it back across the boundary. For readers checking an old event against the table, the difference matters: a date in December 2008 is Sagittarius, a date in December 2019 is Sagittarius, but a date in May 2020 is Capricorn.
The 2031-32 passage repeats the pattern with longer pieces: about four months from February 2031, nearly five from October 2031, and ten weeks from August 2032. By 2043-44 the passage is down to two parts. In a sign where the dignity label changes with degree (see below), the calculator's degree-in-sign output is worth more than usual, along with its vakri (retrograde) flag; its "about 365 days" figure is only an average.
Counted from your Moon: the house Sagittarius is for each sign
The Gochara count starts at the natal Moon sign. Jupiter takes the benefic rule: favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th; favourable in the 11th for every planet; indifferent in the 3rd and 6th; testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th.
| Natal Moon sign | Sagittarius is the | Gochara verdict | Engine note (shortened) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 9th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Taurus | 8th | Testing | More testing even for a natural benefic |
| Gemini | 7th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Cancer | 6th | Neutral | A classically indifferent position |
| Leo | 5th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Virgo | 4th | Testing | Listed among the bad positions for every planet; steadiness over new commitments |
| Libra | 3rd | Neutral | A classically indifferent position; also flagged "intensified" |
| Scorpio | 2nd | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
| Sagittarius | 1st | Testing | More testing even for a natural benefic |
| Capricorn | 12th | Testing | More testing even for a natural benefic |
| Aquarius | 11th | Favourable | The 11th is favourable for every transiting planet |
| Pisces | 10th | Favourable | Happiness, recognition or financial ease |
For a Sagittarius Moon, the Moon sign's own lord transits over it, in its own sign - and the engine still marks it "testing", because the 1st from the Moon is a testing position for a benefic. For a Pisces Moon, the other Jupiter-ruled sign, Sagittarius is the 10th: favourable in the engine, but not in Advanced Predictive Astrology's list, which omits the 10th. Both of these follow from the house count alone. The Moon sign calculator gives your Moon sign; the Moon sign glossary entry explains the convention.
What the classical texts say
In this library BPHS and Saravali describe Sagittarius and Jupiter, but neither reads Jupiter's transit through Sagittarius. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, "Research on Transits" (pp. 310-311), supplies these statements:
- Jupiter "gives good results in 2/5/7/9/11th" from the Moon: the Scorpio, Leo, Gemini, Aries and Aquarius Moons for this sign.
- Jupiter over the Moon sign is "said to induct a sense of fear and anxiety": the Sagittarius Moon.
- Jyotish-Tattvam (Vol. I, Ch. X, Vs. 25-26), as quoted, ties Jupiter in the 5th to the birth of a child: the Leo Moon.
- A Tamil palm-leaf list places Jupiter in the 3rd from the Moon among positions that "will produce intensified" results: the Libra Moon, flagged by the calculator.
- The same page adds that Jupiter's transit "on natal Rahu in Sagittarius will bring some disadvantages circumstances in that year" - a reading for charts with natal Rahu in this sign, not something the Moon count captures.
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks a graha's effects by dignity: full in exaltation, reduced by a quarter in moolatrikona, half in its own sign. That is a statement about natal strength. None of the sources here applies it to a transit, and the engine's Gochara verdict does not use it.
The sign itself: Jupiter's own fiery sign
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 17-18 describes Dhanu as rising with its head, lorded by Guru, Sattvic, tawny, fiery, strong at night, biped in its first half and quadruped in its second, and "splendourous". The engine's dignity for Jupiter here depends on the degree: moolatrikona from 0 to 10 degrees, own sign from 10 to 30. On the way through, Jupiter crosses all of Mula and Purva Ashadha and the first pada of Uttara Ashadha. The natal placement: Jupiter in Sagittarius; the dignity terms: moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).
Worked example: a Leo Moon through 2019-21
Take a natal Moon in Leo. Sagittarius is its 5th sign; Scorpio, its 4th; Capricorn, its 6th. Reading the 2019-20 passage with its neighbours:
- 11 October 2018 to 28 March 2019: Scorpio, the 4th - "testing".
- 28 March to 24 April 2019: Sagittarius, the 5th - "favourable", for under four weeks.
- 24 April to 4 November 2019: Scorpio again - "testing".
- 4 November 2019 to 29 March 2020: Sagittarius - "favourable".
- 29 March to 30 June 2020: Capricorn, the 6th - "neutral".
- 30 June to 20 November 2020: Sagittarius - "favourable".
- 20 November 2020 to 5 April 2021: Capricorn - "neutral".
For this Moon, every Sagittarius stretch is favourable and each is bordered by a testing or indifferent one. The example is about reading the dates against the table; it does not say that anything happened to anyone with a Leo Moon in 2019 or 2020. The transit is classically read with the running dasha - the Jupiter Mahadasha is one - and the Gochar calculator gives the verdict for any one date.
Neighbouring passages: Jupiter transit in Scorpio and Jupiter transit in Capricorn. Jupiter's other own sign: Jupiter transit in Pisces.
- When is Jupiter next in Sagittarius?
- In this app's computation, from 17 February to 13 June 2031, 15 October 2031 to 5 March 2032, and 12 August to 23 October 2032 (UTC).
- When was Jupiter last in Sagittarius?
- In three stretches: 28 March to 24 April 2019, 4 November 2019 to 29 March 2020, and 30 June to 20 November 2020.
- Is Jupiter in its own sign good for my Moon sign?
- The engine reads the house, not the dignity: favourable for Aries, Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces Moons, testing for Taurus, Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn, neutral for Cancer and Libra. Check yours in the Gochar calculator.
- Which Moon sign is flagged "intensified" while Jupiter is in Sagittarius?
- Libra, since Sagittarius is the 3rd sign from Libra and the calculator's "intensified" list pairs Jupiter with the 3rd from the Moon. The verdict for a Libra Moon remains "neutral"; the flag is shown beside it.
- What is Jupiter's moolatrikona in Sagittarius?
- In the engine, 0 to 10 degrees of Sagittarius is moolatrikona for Jupiter and 10 to 30 degrees is own sign. The Gochara verdict is the same across the whole sign.
- Why might another program show a different date?
- Ayanamsa, planetary model and time zone all vary. This app quotes UTC and may differ from other software by hours to a day or two near an ingress.
