Jupiter transit in Capricorn: the dates of its debilitation transit, and each Moon sign

Capricorn (Makara) is Saturn's earthy, movable sign and the sign of Jupiter's debilitation. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Jupiter's deepest exaltation as 5 degrees of Cancer and places its fall at the same degree of the seventh sign from there - Capricorn. A transit through Capricorn is therefore often described as Jupiter at its weakest. A weak Jupiter is not a warning for everyone. The engine's verdict comes from the house Capricorn makes from your Moon, and for half the Moon signs that verdict is favourable. The Gochar calculator applies the rule to your own Moon.

Dates: when Jupiter is in Capricorn

Every stay of Jupiter in sidereal Capricorn beginning between 1990 and 2050, retrograde returns as separate rows.

Capricorn is where the split passages begin earliest in this window. Already in 2008-09 the passage came in two pieces, with Jupiter in Aquarius from 1 May to 31 July 2009. In 2020-21 it came in three: a first stretch from 29 March to 30 June 2020, the main stay from 20 November 2020 to 5 April 2021, and a short return from 13 September to 21 November 2021. The 2032-33 passage is two pieces, and the 2044-45 passage is a single block of about a year again - the cycle of fragmentation has moved on to other signs by then.

The exit on 18 March 2033 is at 00:45 UTC, already the morning of 18 March in India, so the two calendars agree on that date. Near a boundary the calculator's degree-in-sign and vakri (retrograde) flag tell you which side of it Jupiter is on; its "about 365 days" label is an average for any sign and does not describe a split passage.

Counted from your Moon: the house Capricorn is for each sign

For Gochara, count from the natal Moon sign to Capricorn. The engine reads Jupiter with the benefic rule: favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th; favourable in the 11th for every planet; indifferent in the 3rd and 6th; testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th. Jupiter's debilitation does not enter the rule.

The Cancer row is the mirror of the Cancer transit page: there the Capricorn Moon had an exalted Jupiter in its 7th; here the Cancer Moon has a debilitated Jupiter in its 7th, and the rule calls both favourable. Both of Jupiter's own signs also come out favourable here - Capricorn is the 2nd from Sagittarius and the 11th from Pisces. The Aries row is one where the engine and Advanced Predictive Astrology differ: the 10th is favourable in the engine and absent from the book's list. The split passages change the picture for Moon signs whose verdicts differ across the boundaries. For an Aquarius Moon, Sagittarius is the 11th ("favourable"), Capricorn the 12th ("testing") and Aquarius itself the 1st ("testing"), so in 2020 its verdict went from favourable to testing on 29 March, back to favourable on 30 June, and to testing again on 20 November, where it stayed through the Aquarius stretches. For a Pisces Moon the run was favourable throughout 2020 (Sagittarius 10th, Capricorn 11th) and only turned "testing" when Jupiter reached Aquarius, its 12th, on 5 April 2021.

What the classical texts say, and what they do not

BPHS and Saravali in this library do not give a reading for Jupiter transiting Capricorn. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, "Research on Transits" (pp. 310-311), gives the general rules:

• Jupiter "gives good results in 2/5/7/9/11th" from the Moon: for Capricorn, the Sagittarius, Virgo, Cancer, Taurus and Pisces Moons.
• Jupiter over the Moon sign is "said to induct a sense of fear and anxiety": the Capricorn Moon.
• Jyotish-Tattvam (Vol. I, Ch. X, Vs. 25-26), as quoted, ties Jupiter in the 5th to the birth of a child: the Virgo Moon here.
• A Tamil palm-leaf reading lists Jupiter in the 3rd from the Moon among positions that "will produce intensified" results: the Scorpio Moon, which the calculator flags.

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 says a graha's good effects are "nil in debilitation". That sloka is about a planet's strength in the birth chart. None of the sources in this library says that a debilitated transiting Jupiter cancels its Gochara result, and the engine does not apply such a rule. Where the sources are silent, this page does not fill the gap.

The sign itself: Saturn's earthy sign

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20 describes Makar as lorded by Sani, Tamasic, earthy, of the south, strong at night, rising with its back, with a quadruped first half and a second half "footless, moving in water". The engine labels Jupiter debilitated across all 30 degrees of the sign (see neecha). In Capricorn, Jupiter crosses the last three padas of Uttara Ashadha, all of Shravana, and the first two padas of Dhanishta. For the natal placement, see Jupiter in Capricorn.

Worked example: a Virgo Moon through 2019-22

Take a natal Moon in Virgo. Capricorn is its 5th sign; Sagittarius its 4th; Aquarius its 6th. Reading the 2020-21 passage with its neighbours:

1. 1.4 November 2019 to 29 March 2020: Sagittarius, the 4th - "testing".
2. 2.29 March to 30 June 2020: Capricorn, the 5th - "favourable".
3. 3.30 June to 20 November 2020: Sagittarius - "testing".
4. 4.20 November 2020 to 5 April 2021: Capricorn - "favourable".
5. 5.5 April to 13 September 2021: Aquarius, the 6th - "neutral".
6. 6.13 September to 21 November 2021: Capricorn - "favourable".
7. 7.21 November 2021 to 13 April 2022: Aquarius - "neutral".

All three Capricorn stretches are favourable for this Moon under the engine's rule, even though Jupiter is debilitated in each of them; the testing and indifferent stretches come from the neighbouring signs. That is the result of the house count and nothing more. The transit is read alongside the running dasha (one is the Jupiter Mahadasha), and the Gochar calculator gives the verdict for a single date.
