Saturn transit in Capricorn: the dates, and what it means for each Moon sign

Capricorn is one of Saturn's two own signs. BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20 names Shani as its lord and describes it as earthy and Tamasic, strong at night, four-footed in its first half and footless, moving in water, in its second. The engine labels Saturn here "Own sign" from 0 to 30 degrees. Saturn in its own sign has the most rows of any Saturn transit in this window - seven - because the 1990-2050 span catches two passages that both looped at the Aquarius boundary and the start of a third. What follows is the engine's dates and verdicts. None of it says what will happen to a reader; the Gochar calculator applies the rule to your Moon.

When Saturn is in Capricorn: the ingress dates

The 1990-1993 passage had loops at both ends: a three-month first touch in 1990, then the long stay, then a one-month return in October-November 1993. The 2020 passage looped only at its exit: Saturn went into Aquarius on 27 April 2022, came back on 13 July 2022, and left on 16 January 2023. The 2049 passage opens with a loop, and its long stay runs past the window's end.

All of these reversals are retrograde motion (vakri). The Gochar calculator shows the flag and Saturn's degree in the sign.

Capricorn counted from your Moon: the house and the verdict

Gochara (glossary) counts from the natal Moon sign. The engine's verdicts for Saturn: testing in the 1st, 8th, 12th (most intense) and 4th; favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th; neutral in the 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th.

Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Ardha Ashtama Sani with Saturn in Capricorn

• Aquarius Moon: Capricorn is the 12th, the rising phase. Aquarius is also ruled by Saturn.
• Capricorn Moon: the peak phase, Saturn in its own sign over a Moon in its own sign. The engine raises the "intensified" flag as for any 1st-house Saturn. Advanced Predictive Astrology says Saturn's major period coinciding with Sade Sati is the hardest case (p. 312); that is the book's view, reported.
• Sagittarius Moon: the setting phase. In 2022 Saturn's step into Aquarius from 27 April to 13 July paused it for those weeks.
• Gemini Moon: Capricorn is the 8th, Ashtama Sani - the worked example.
• Libra Moon: Capricorn is the 4th, Ardha Ashtama Sani.

The North Indian list reported in Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) names the first two and a half years of Sade Sati as the heavier for Capricorn, the last two and a half for Aquarius, and the first five for Sagittarius. How long Saturn spends in Capricorn, and the nakshatras it crosses

Subtracting the engine's timestamps: the 1990-1993 passage spent 934 days in Capricorn (90, 812 and 32), and the 2020-2023 passage 1,012 (825 and 187). The 2049 passage cannot be totalled here because it runs past the window. The 913-day duration the calculator shows is an average label for Saturn in any sign; both complete Capricorn passages run over it.

Capricorn contains padas 2-4 of Uttara Ashadha, all of Shravana and padas 1-2 of Dhanishta in the engine's table. The calculator's degree readout places Saturn among them. The whole-sign Gochara rule ignores this, but Advanced Predictive Astrology's 45-degree Sade Sati boundary would not: it is measured from the natal Moon's exact degree, so a Moon early in Uttara Ashadha and one late in Dhanishta would see different windows under it.

The 2022 loop is a good test of any Sade Sati date someone quotes. For a Sagittarius Moon, the whole-sign setting phase was interrupted from 27 April to 13 July 2022; for an Aquarius Moon, those same weeks moved Saturn from the rising phase into the peak. A single "start" and "end" date for either Moon hides that.

What the classical texts say

The corpus gives no transit reading specific to Saturn in Capricorn. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 rates a planet in its own sign as "half beneficial", but that is a ratio of effects for a natal placement, not a transit rule, and the engine does not apply it to Gochara. Advanced Predictive Astrology's transit rules, the ones the engine's houses echo, are by house from the Moon and do not single out Saturn's own signs.

The book quotes Varahamihira on Ashtama Sani - Saturn in the 8th from the Moon - in personal, negative terms (p. 313). This app reports that as the classical claim and keeps its own wording: "a period that calls for real patience and consolidation".

The sign itself: Saturn at home

Worked example: a Gemini Moon and Ashtama Sani, 2020-2023

Take a natal Moon in Gemini. Capricorn is the 8th from it; Sagittarius the 7th; Aquarius the 9th.

1. 1.26 October 2017 to 23 January 2020: Saturn in Sagittarius, the 7th - "neutral".
2. 2.23 January 2020 to 27 April 2022: Capricorn, the 8th - Ashtama Sani, Gochara "testing".
3. 3.27 April 2022 to 13 July 2022: Aquarius, the 9th - "neutral"; the named period pauses.
4. 4.13 July 2022 to 16 January 2023: Capricorn again - Ashtama Sani.
5. 5.16 January 2023 to 29 March 2025: Aquarius, the 9th - "neutral".

The same Moon's next Ashtama Sani starts on 7 March 2049. Read with the dasha - Advanced Predictive Astrology's other limb of prediction - the transit is one input among several; a Saturn Mahadasha running at the same time is a different case from a Mercury period, Mercury ruling Gemini.
