In short
Saturn in Capricorn is Saturn in its own sign throughout, with no Moolatrikona band. Saravali reads it as learning, skill and honour, BPHS makes it a Sasa Yoga in a Kendra, and the aspecting planet and the Lagna decide how the strength is used.
Saturn in Capricorn is Saturn in its own sign. That label is fixed by the sign and degree alone. What the placement means is a separate question, and the classical texts answer it through the aspects on Saturn, the house Capricorn occupies in your chart and the houses Saturn rules from your Lagna.
This page covers only the combination. For Saturn as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Saturn in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its nature, its nakshatras and what a rising Capricorn means - see Capricorn, Makara Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Saturn in Capricorn specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Saturn in Capricorn: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Saturn (Shani) its exaltation in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20 degrees, and its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, Mesha (Aries), at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 adds that Saturn's arrangement in Kumbha (Aquarius) is the same as the Sun's in Simha: the first 20 degrees Moolatrikona, the rest its own house. The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats all of this and adds that the whole of Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, that Mercury and Venus are its friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, and Jupiter neutral. The terms have their own entries: uchcha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation), Moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).
So Saturn in Capricorn is Saturn in its own sign, and - unlike Saturn in Aquarius - own sign throughout: there is no Moolatrikona band in Capricorn. The engine labels it Own sign from 0 to 30 degrees.
| Degrees of Capricorn | Label without a chart (engine-facts) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Own sign | One half |
How the engine decides
The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the fivefold relation with the sign's lord. For Saturn in Capricorn one of the first four tests always answers, so no other planet's position can change the label. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the steps in the same order but puts Moolatrikona a quarter below exaltation, where the engine scores them equally.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 gives the same ladder a name for each step. A graha in its exaltation sign is in Dipt avastha, in its own sign Swasth. For Saturn in Capricorn that is Swasth.
The nakshatras Saturn moves through in Capricorn
Capricorn holds padas 2, 3, 4 of Uttara Ashadha; all four padas of Shravana; and padas 1, 2 of Dhanishta. The nakshatra pages go further: Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Capricorn | Degrees of Capricorn | Saturn's label there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uttara Ashadha | 2, 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 10 degrees | Own sign |
| Shravana | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes | Own sign |
| Dhanishta | 1, 2 | 23 degrees 20 minutes to 30 degrees | Own sign |
What the classical texts say about Saturn in Capricorn
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 19-20
Saravali's chapter on Saturn in the twelve signs gives Capricorn one line. In paraphrase it reads: rule over the lands of others, Vedic knowledge, virtue and skill in many fine arts, honour and fame, respect for others, a taste for bathing and decoration, skill in performance, life in foreign places, courage and polite behaviour. Like every line in the chapter it describes a type, not a person, and it is a single text's view.
The neighbouring lines put it in context. The line for Saturn in Sagittarius (Sl. 17-18) and the one for Saturn in Aquarius (Sl. 21-22) are set against one of the more favourable lines in the chapter.
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Saturn in its own sign (Capricorn or Aquarius) under the aspect of each other planet. These lines usually decide more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:
- Aspected by the Sun: sickness (the text's statement, not medical advice), eating others' food, wandering and carrying loads.
- Aspected by the Moon: a fickle mind, untruthfulness, strained terms with the mother, riches, and sorrow from wandering.
- Aspected by Mars: great valour, fame, sharpness, and a place among great men.
- Aspected by Mercury: carrying loads, a clouded (tamasic) disposition, good looks, wandering, learning, modest means and good fortune.
- Aspected by Jupiter: fame for good qualities, royal standing, long life and freedom from disease.
- Aspected by Venus: riches, good fortune, happiness and the enjoyment of food and drink, with a remark about other women.
Note the reversal against the Mars-sign group: Mars aspecting Saturn in its own sign reads as valour and fame, while Mars aspecting Saturn in Aries or Scorpio reads as one of the worst lines. The Sun and Moon read poorly here; Jupiter again reads best. The chapter has no line for Saturn aspecting itself, and it does not say how the aspect is to be counted; the worked example below uses this app's rule.
BPHS and Saravali on Sasa Yoga
BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Saturn. What it says about Saturn in Capricorn comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: when Shani is in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra from the Lagna it forms Sasa, one of the five Panchmahapurusha yogas; Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 states the same condition. Saturn in Capricorn therefore forms Sasa Yoga only for the four Lagnas that put Capricorn in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house. For the other eight Lagnas the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent. Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 8-10 then describes the Sasa native at length, a mix of praise (valour, fame, command, skill in every assignment, intelligence) and less flattering remarks.
Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56, on the effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, lists a Saturn in its exaltation, own sign or Moolatrikona among the conditions for a favourable period; Saturn in Capricorn meets one of them. Sl. 57-60 lists the opposite conditions - a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or combust - which can apply to the same Saturn, so the dignity alone does not settle the dasha reading. Timing has its own page: Saturn Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras
The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras makes a general remark that bears on this sign: Saturn is "beneficial" in its own sign, in the signs of Jupiter and when exalted. Capricorn is one of those signs.
In its first-house sutras (Ch. 7 Sutras 1-7), Bhrigu Sutras says a Saturn in the Lagna in its own sign, Capricorn or Aquarius, makes the native's father rich. The commentator prefers Capricorn rising to Aquarius rising, because Saturn then rules the 1st and 2nd rather than the 1st and 12th. See Saturn in the 1st house.
The commentary on the house chapters goes further and names Lagna-by-Lagna cases where Saturn's placement is read as favourable. Those that put Saturn in Capricorn are:
- Sagittarius Lagna, Saturn in the 2nd: in its own sign in the 2nd; read as well off financially (Saturn in the 2nd house).
- Taurus Lagna, Saturn in the 9th: lord of the 9th in the 9th in its own sign; the commentator calls it a powerful Raja yoga (Saturn in the 9th house).
- Aries Lagna, Saturn in the 10th: lord of the 10th and 11th in the 10th in its own sign; a very powerful Raja yoga in the commentator's reading (Saturn in the 10th house).
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: the dignity scheme - exaltation in Libra deepest at 20 degrees, debilitation in Aries, own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, Moolatrikona in the first 20 degrees of Aquarius (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Bhrigu Sutras).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali turns the verdict on the aspecting planet; BPHS on the house, combustion and the dasha conditions; Bhrigu Sutras on the Lagna and the houses Saturn rules.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Saturn in Capricorn as such. Saravali is the only text in the corpus that writes one.
What Saturn rules from each Lagna, with Saturn in Capricorn
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so from any Lagna it rules two neighbouring houses. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical: the second column is where Saturn sits, the third what it rules. The house pages, such as Saturn in the 10th house and Saturn in the 4th house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of Saturn (Capricorn) | Saturn also rules (Capricorn, Aquarius) | Sasa by BPHS Ch. 75 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 10th | 10th and 11th | Yes |
| Taurus | 9th | 9th and 10th | No |
| Gemini | 8th | 8th and 9th | No |
| Cancer | 7th | 7th and 8th | Yes |
| Leo | 6th | 6th and 7th | No |
| Virgo | 5th | 5th and 6th | No |
| Libra | 4th | 4th and 5th | Yes |
| Scorpio | 3rd | 3rd and 4th | No |
| Sagittarius | 2nd | 2nd and 3rd | No |
| Capricorn | 1st | 1st and 2nd | Yes |
| Aquarius | 12th | 12th and 1st | No |
| Pisces | 11th | 11th and 12th | No |
How often Saturn is in Capricorn
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Saturn was in Capricorn in 317 of them, 10.6 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share is uneven from sign to sign because Saturn's stays are long and do not divide the 75 years evenly: in the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, UTC), Saturn's stays in Capricorn were:
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 21 March 1990 | 19 June 1990 |
| 15 December 1990 | 6 March 1993 |
| 11 October 1993 | 13 November 1993 |
| 23 January 2020 | 27 April 2022 |
| 13 July 2022 | 16 January 2023 |
| 7 March 2049 | 8 July 2049 |
The transit reading of the same sign - Saturn moving through it now, counted from your Moon - is a different subject with its own page: Saturn transit in Capricorn.
Worked example: 29 March 1990, 03:30 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Capricorn rises at 17.19 degrees. Saturn is at 0.46 degrees of Capricorn, in Uttara Ashadha pada 2, in the 1st house, not retrograde and not combust. At 0.46 degrees it falls in the Own sign band, so the engine labels it Own sign; no other planet's position enters the calculation.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Pisces 14.25 | Uttara Bhadrapada (4) | 3 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Aries 13.5 | Bharani (1) | 4 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Capricorn 19.1 | Shravana (3) | 1 | Exalted |
| Mercury | Pisces 24.24 | Revati (3) | 3 | Debilitated |
| Jupiter | Gemini 8.78 | Ardra (1) | 6 | Neutral |
| Venus | Capricorn 27.8 | Dhanishta (2) | 1 | Neutral |
| Saturn | Capricorn 0.46 | Uttara Ashadha (2) | 1 | Own sign |
| Rahu | Capricorn 20.14 | Shravana (4) | 1 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Cancer 20.14 | Ashlesha (2) | 7 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Capricorn Lagna, Capricorn is the 1st house and Aquarius the 2nd, so Saturn rules the 1st and the 2nd and sits in the 1st. The 1st is a Kendra, so by BPHS Ch. 75 this chart has Sasa Yoga. The 1st is a Kendra, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 counts in Saturn's favour.
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 1st here, so none of the Sl. 61-66 lines applies and only the bare sign line does. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Mars (19.1), Venus (27.8), Rahu (20.14) share Capricorn with Saturn. Saravali's Ch. 29 lines are about aspect, not conjunction, so this page does not add a reading for the company that the text does not give.
Any reader can re-enter this birth - the date, the time in IST and New Delhi as the place - in the Birth Chart calculator and get the same positions.
Checking Saturn in Capricorn in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Saturn is in Capricorn and read its dignity label.
- Note the house Capricorn occupies, and the houses Capricorn and Aquarius occupy: those are where Saturn sits and what it rules.
- If Capricorn is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, check the Yogas list for Sasa.
- List the planets that aspect Capricorn: any graha in the 7th sign from it, Mars in the sign 4 or 8 places before it, Jupiter in the sign 5 or 9 places before it. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Saturn in Capricorn exalted?
- No. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. In Capricorn the engine labels it Own sign. See Saturn in Libra.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Saturn in Capricorn?
- No. For Saturn in Capricorn the engine's first four tests always answer, so the friendship test is never reached. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66, but not the label.
- Does Saturn in Capricorn give Sasa Yoga?
- Only for Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn Lagnas, which put Capricorn in a Kendra. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs both the dignity and the Kendra.
- Which aspect matters most for Saturn in Capricorn in Saravali?
- Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66 gives six lines, one per aspecting planet. Note the reversal against the Mars-sign group: Mars aspecting Saturn in its own sign reads as valour and fame, while Mars aspecting Saturn in Aries or Scorpio reads as one of the worst lines.
- How common is Saturn in Capricorn?
- In this app's sample it was in Capricorn in 317 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 10.6 per cent. Because Saturn stays in a sign for long stretches, the births with this placement cluster in particular years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the aspects and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
