In short
Saturn in Aquarius is Saturn in its Moolatrikona for the first 20 degrees and its own sign after. Yet Saravali's sign line for it is harsh; the aspect lines, the Kendra test for Sasa Yoga and the Lagna decide the reading.
Saturn in Aquarius is Saturn in its Moolatrikona sign. That label is fixed by the sign and degree alone. What the placement means is a separate question, and the classical texts answer it through the aspects on Saturn, the house Aquarius occupies in your chart and the houses Saturn rules from your Lagna.
This page covers only the combination. For Saturn as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Saturn in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its nature, its nakshatras and what a rising Aquarius means - see Aquarius, Kumbha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Saturn in Aquarius specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Saturn in Aquarius: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Saturn (Shani) its exaltation in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20 degrees, and its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, Mesha (Aries), at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 adds that Saturn's arrangement in Kumbha (Aquarius) is the same as the Sun's in Simha: the first 20 degrees Moolatrikona, the rest its own house. The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats all of this and adds that the whole of Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, that Mercury and Venus are its friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, and Jupiter neutral. The terms have their own entries: uchcha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation), Moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).
So Saturn in Aquarius has two labels depending on degree: Moolatrikona from 0 up to (not including) 20 degrees, and Own sign from 20 to 30. Its other own sign, Capricorn, has no such split. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries.
| Degrees of Aquarius | Label without a chart (engine-facts) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 20 | Moolatrikona | Three quarters (full less one fourth) |
| 20 to 30 | Own sign | One half |
How the engine decides
The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the fivefold relation with the sign's lord. For Saturn in Aquarius one of the first four tests always answers, so no other planet's position can change the label. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the steps in the same order but puts Moolatrikona a quarter below exaltation, where the engine scores them equally.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 gives the same ladder a name for each step. A graha in its exaltation sign is in Dipt avastha, in its own sign Swasth. For Saturn in Aquarius that is Swasth (its own sign; Sl. 11-18 also make Moolatrikona Garvit).
The nakshatras Saturn moves through in Aquarius
Aquarius holds padas 3, 4 of Dhanishta; all four padas of Shatabhisha; and padas 1, 2, 3 of Purva Bhadrapada. The Moolatrikona band, 0 to 20 degrees, ends exactly where Shatabhisha ends: a Dhanishta or Shatabhisha Saturn in Aquarius is always Moolatrikona, and a Purva Bhadrapada Saturn in Aquarius is always own sign. The nakshatra pages go further: Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Aquarius | Degrees of Aquarius | Saturn's label there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhanishta | 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 6 degrees 40 minutes | Moolatrikona |
| Shatabhisha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees | Moolatrikona |
| Purva Bhadrapada | 1, 2, 3 | 20 degrees to 30 degrees | Own sign |
What the classical texts say about Saturn in Aquarius
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 21-22
Saravali's chapter on Saturn in the twelve signs gives Aquarius one line. In paraphrase it reads: a harsh line: untruthfulness, attachment to wine and women, bad friendships, a very sharp temper, aversion to learning and to traditional law, harsh speech - though it also calls the native eminent and says he attempts many undertakings. Like every line in the chapter it describes a type, not a person, and it is a single text's view.
The neighbouring lines put it in context. The line for Saturn in Capricorn (Sl. 19-20) and the one for Saturn in Pisces (Sl. 23-24) show how much the chapter's verdict moves from one sign to the next.
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Saturn in its own sign (Capricorn or Aquarius) under the aspect of each other planet. These lines usually decide more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:
- Aspected by the Sun: sickness (the text's statement, not medical advice), eating others' food, wandering and carrying loads.
- Aspected by the Moon: a fickle mind, untruthfulness, strained terms with the mother, riches, and sorrow from wandering.
- Aspected by Mars: great valour, fame, sharpness, and a place among great men.
- Aspected by Mercury: carrying loads, a clouded (tamasic) disposition, good looks, wandering, learning, modest means and good fortune.
- Aspected by Jupiter: fame for good qualities, royal standing, long life and freedom from disease.
- Aspected by Venus: riches, good fortune, happiness and the enjoyment of food and drink, with a remark about other women.
Note the reversal against the Mars-sign group: Mars aspecting Saturn in its own sign reads as valour and fame, while Mars aspecting Saturn in Aries or Scorpio reads as one of the worst lines. The Sun and Moon read poorly here; Jupiter again reads best. The chapter has no line for Saturn aspecting itself, and it does not say how the aspect is to be counted; the worked example below uses this app's rule.
BPHS and Saravali on Sasa Yoga
BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Saturn. What it says about Saturn in Aquarius comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: when Shani is in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra from the Lagna it forms Sasa, one of the five Panchmahapurusha yogas; Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 states the same condition. Saturn in Aquarius therefore forms Sasa Yoga only for the four Lagnas that put Aquarius in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house. For the other eight Lagnas the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent. Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 8-10 then describes the Sasa native at length, a mix of praise (valour, fame, command, skill in every assignment, intelligence) and less flattering remarks.
Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56, on the effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, lists a Saturn in its exaltation, own sign or Moolatrikona among the conditions for a favourable period; Saturn in Aquarius meets one of them. Sl. 57-60 lists the opposite conditions - a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or combust - which can apply to the same Saturn, so the dignity alone does not settle the dasha reading. Timing has its own page: Saturn Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras
The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras makes a general remark that bears on this sign: Saturn is "beneficial" in its own sign, in the signs of Jupiter and when exalted. Aquarius is one of those signs.
In its first-house sutras (Ch. 7 Sutras 1-7), Bhrigu Sutras says a Saturn in the Lagna in its own sign, Capricorn or Aquarius, makes the native's father rich. The commentator prefers Capricorn rising to Aquarius rising, because Saturn then rules the 1st and 2nd rather than the 1st and 12th. See Saturn in the 1st house.
The commentary on the house chapters goes further and names Lagna-by-Lagna cases where Saturn's placement is read as favourable. Those that put Saturn in Aquarius are:
- Capricorn Lagna, Saturn in the 2nd: lord of the 1st and 2nd in the 2nd, in its own sign; read as well off financially (Saturn in the 2nd house).
- Gemini Lagna, Saturn in the 9th: lord of the 9th in the 9th in its own sign; a powerful Raja yoga in the commentator's reading (Saturn in the 9th house).
- Taurus Lagna, Saturn in the 10th: lord of the 9th and 10th in the 10th in its own sign; a very powerful Raja yoga (Saturn in the 10th house).
- Aries Lagna, Saturn in the 11th: lord of the 10th and 11th in the 11th; a very powerful Dhana yoga (Saturn in the 11th house).
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: the dignity scheme - exaltation in Libra deepest at 20 degrees, debilitation in Aries, own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, Moolatrikona in the first 20 degrees of Aquarius (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Bhrigu Sutras).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali turns the verdict on the aspecting planet; BPHS on the house, combustion and the dasha conditions; Bhrigu Sutras on the Lagna and the houses Saturn rules.
- Tension: Aquarius is Saturn's Moolatrikona, yet Saravali's sign line for it is one of the harshest in the chapter. The texts do not reconcile this; the dignity label and the character line are separate judgements.
What Saturn rules from each Lagna, with Saturn in Aquarius
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so from any Lagna it rules two neighbouring houses. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical: the second column is where Saturn sits, the third what it rules. The house pages, such as Saturn in the 11th house and Saturn in the 5th house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of Saturn (Aquarius) | Saturn also rules (Capricorn, Aquarius) | Sasa by BPHS Ch. 75 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 11th | 10th and 11th | No |
| Taurus | 10th | 9th and 10th | Yes |
| Gemini | 9th | 8th and 9th | No |
| Cancer | 8th | 7th and 8th | No |
| Leo | 7th | 6th and 7th | Yes |
| Virgo | 6th | 5th and 6th | No |
| Libra | 5th | 4th and 5th | No |
| Scorpio | 4th | 3rd and 4th | Yes |
| Sagittarius | 3rd | 2nd and 3rd | No |
| Capricorn | 2nd | 1st and 2nd | No |
| Aquarius | 1st | 12th and 1st | Yes |
| Pisces | 12th | 11th and 12th | No |
How often Saturn is in Aquarius
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Saturn was in Aquarius in 310 of them, 10.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share is uneven from sign to sign because Saturn's stays are long and do not divide the 75 years evenly: in the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, UTC), Saturn's stays in Aquarius were:
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 6 March 1993 | 11 October 1993 |
| 13 November 1993 | 4 June 1995 |
| 7 August 1995 | 17 February 1996 |
| 27 April 2022 | 13 July 2022 |
| 16 January 2023 | 29 March 2025 |
The transit reading of the same sign - Saturn moving through it now, counted from your Moon - is a different subject with its own page: Saturn transit in Aquarius.
Worked example: 8 March 1993, 00:16 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Scorpio rises at 10.36 degrees. Saturn is at 0.2 degrees of Aquarius, in Dhanishta pada 3, in the 4th house, not retrograde and not combust. At 0.2 degrees it falls in the Moolatrikona band, so the engine labels it Moolatrikona; no other planet's position enters the calculation.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aquarius 23.46 | Purva Bhadrapada (2) | 4 | Enemy sign |
| Moon | Leo 14.46 | Purva Phalguni (1) | 10 | Neutral |
| Mars | Gemini 17.26 | Ardra (4) | 8 | Enemy sign |
| Mercury | Aquarius 26.18, retrograde | Purva Bhadrapada (2) | 4 | Enemy sign |
| Jupiter | Virgo 18.71, retrograde | Hasta (3) | 11 | Enemy sign |
| Venus | Pisces 26 | Revati (3) | 5 | Exalted |
| Saturn | Aquarius 0.2 | Dhanishta (3) | 4 | Moolatrikona |
| Rahu | Scorpio 23.18 | Jyeshtha (2) | 1 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Taurus 23.18 | Rohini (4) | 7 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Scorpio Lagna, Capricorn is the 3rd house and Aquarius the 4th, so Saturn rules the 3rd and the 4th and sits in the 4th. The 4th is a Kendra, so by BPHS Ch. 75 this chart has Sasa Yoga. The 4th is a Kendra, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 counts in Saturn's favour.
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - the Moon (in the 10th) aspects the 4th. So the Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66 line that applies is: aspected by the Moon, a fickle mind, untruthfulness, strained terms with the mother, riches, and sorrow from wandering.
Company. Sun (23.46), Mercury (26.18) share Aquarius with Saturn. Saravali's Ch. 29 lines are about aspect, not conjunction, so this page does not add a reading for the company that the text does not give.
Any reader can re-enter this birth - the date, the time in IST and New Delhi as the place - in the Birth Chart calculator and get the same positions.
Checking Saturn in Aquarius in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Saturn is in Aquarius and read its dignity label: below 20 degrees is Moolatrikona, 20 or above own sign.
- Note the house Aquarius occupies, and the houses Capricorn and Aquarius occupy: those are where Saturn sits and what it rules.
- If Aquarius is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, check the Yogas list for Sasa.
- List the planets that aspect Aquarius: any graha in the 7th sign from it, Mars in the sign 4 or 8 places before it, Jupiter in the sign 5 or 9 places before it. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Saturn in Aquarius exalted?
- No. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. In Aquarius the engine labels it Moolatrikona then Own sign. See Saturn in Libra.
- Why does the degree of Saturn in Aquarius matter?
- Because the Moolatrikona band ends at 20 degrees. Below it the engine labels Saturn Moolatrikona, from 20 onward Own sign. BPHS gives the first three quarters of the good effects and the second half.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Saturn in Aquarius?
- No. For Saturn in Aquarius the engine's first four tests always answer, so the friendship test is never reached. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66, but not the label.
- Does Saturn in Aquarius give Sasa Yoga?
- Only for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius Lagnas, which put Aquarius in a Kendra. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs both the dignity and the Kendra.
- Which aspect matters most for Saturn in Aquarius in Saravali?
- Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 61-66 gives six lines, one per aspecting planet. Note the reversal against the Mars-sign group: Mars aspecting Saturn in its own sign reads as valour and fame, while Mars aspecting Saturn in Aries or Scorpio reads as one of the worst lines.
- How common is Saturn in Aquarius?
- In this app's sample it was in Aquarius in 310 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 10.3 per cent. Because Saturn stays in a sign for long stretches, the births with this placement cluster in particular years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the aspects and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
