In short
In this app's computation Saturn was last in sidereal Aquarius from 16 January 2023 to 29 March 2025, after a first touch from 27 April to 13 July 2022, and is not in Aquarius again before 2050. Counted from the Moon it was Sade Sati for Pisces, Aquarius and Capricorn Moons, Ashtama Sani for Cancer and Ardha Ashtama Sani for Scorpio.
Aquarius is Saturn's other own sign and its moolatrikona. BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 21 describes Kumbh as a man holding a pot, airy and Tamasic, strong by day, and names Shani as its lord. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives Saturn the same arrangement in Aquarius that the Sun has in Leo: the first 20 degrees moolatrikona, the rest own sign, which is exactly how the engine labels it. Unlike most pages in this series, this one is mostly about the past: Saturn left Aquarius in March 2025, and the engine finds no return before 2050. Background: Saturn in Vedic astrology and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi.
The page gives dates and rules, not a forecast. The Gochar calculator applies the rule to your Moon on any date, past or future.
When Saturn is in Aquarius: the ingress dates
Five stays between 1990 and 2050, all before 2026. Both passages were broken by retrograde loops.
| Enters Aquarius (UTC) | Leaves Aquarius (UTC) | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| 6 March 1993 | 11 October 1993 | Retrograde back into Capricorn |
| 13 November 1993 | 4 June 1995 | Into Pisces, then retrograde back |
| 7 August 1995 | 17 February 1996 | Moves on into Pisces |
| 27 April 2022 | 13 July 2022 | Retrograde back into Capricorn |
| 16 January 2023 | 29 March 2025 | Moves on into Pisces |
The 1993-1996 passage looped at both boundaries: Saturn spent seven months in Aquarius, a month back in Capricorn, about eighteen months in Aquarius, two months in Pisces, and a final six months in Aquarius. The 2022-2025 passage looped only at the start, with eleven weeks in Aquarius in 2022 before a return to Capricorn. The exit on 29 March 2025 came at 00:28 UTC, which was already the morning of 29 March in India.
The returns are retrograde motion (vakri). The Gochar calculator can be set to a past date to see the flag and degree on that day.
Aquarius counted from your Moon: the house and the verdict
Gochara (glossary) counts from the natal Moon sign. The engine's Saturn verdicts: testing in the 1st, 8th, 12th (most intense) and 4th; favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th; neutral in the 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th.
| Natal Moon sign | Aquarius is the | Gochara verdict | Engine note (shortened) | Named Saturn period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 11th | Favourable | The 11th is favourable for every transiting planet | - |
| Taurus | 10th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Gemini | 9th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Cancer | 8th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Ashtama Sani |
| Leo | 7th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Virgo | 6th | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Libra | 5th | Neutral | Classically unremarkable for Saturn | - |
| Scorpio | 4th | Testing | Among the bad positions; steadiness over new commitments | Ardha Ashtama Sani |
| Sagittarius | 3rd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | - |
| Capricorn | 2nd | Favourable | Supportive; steady, disciplined progress | Sade Sati, setting phase |
| Aquarius | 1st | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, peak phase |
| Pisces | 12th | Testing | Most intense of Saturn's positions; patience and consolidation | Sade Sati, rising phase |
For a Taurus Moon, Aquarius is the 10th: neutral in the engine, "a period of gain" in Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 311). Your Moon sign: Moon sign calculator; why the Moon: Moon sign and nakshatra.
Sade Sati, Ashtama Sani and Ardha Ashtama Sani with Saturn in Aquarius
- Pisces Moon: Aquarius is the 12th, the rising phase - the worked example.
- Aquarius Moon: the peak phase, Saturn in its moolatrikona over the natal Moon sign; the engine's "intensified" flag applies.
- Capricorn Moon: the setting phase, which ended on 29 March 2025.
- Cancer Moon: Aquarius is the 8th, Ashtama Sani (glossary).
- Scorpio Moon: Aquarius is the 4th, Ardha Ashtama Sani.
The North Indian list Advanced Predictive Astrology reports (p. 312) gives the last two and a half years as the heavier for Aquarius, the last five for Pisces and the first two and a half for Capricorn. It is not computed here. The Sade Sati calculator, the Sade Sati page and the glossary entry give the whole-sign rule this app uses.
How long Saturn spends in Aquarius, and the nakshatras it crosses
Subtracting the engine's timestamps: the 1993-1996 passage spent 982 days in Aquarius (220, 568 and 194), spread over almost three calendar years. The 2022-2025 passage spent 879 (77 and 802). The calculator's duration label, 913 days, is a fixed average used for every sign rather than a figure for Aquarius.
Aquarius holds padas 3-4 of Dhanishta, all of Shatabhisha and padas 1-3 of Purva Bhadrapada in the engine's table. The moolatrikona portion, 0-20 degrees, covers those two Dhanishta padas and all of Shatabhisha. The Gochar calculator's degree readout places Saturn among these; the whole-sign rule does not depend on it.
Where the nakshatra does matter is Advanced Predictive Astrology's alternative Sade Sati boundary, 45 degrees either side of the natal Moon's exact degree. Under that version a Pisces Moon early in Purva Bhadrapada and one late in the sign would not start Sade Sati on the same day, while the whole-sign rule starts both on 27 April 2022. This app uses the whole-sign rule.
Because the passage is over, the practical use of these dates is looking back. The Gochar calculator accepts past dates, so a reader can check where Saturn stood from their Moon in, say, the summer of 2022, when it spent eleven weeks in Aquarius and then returned to Capricorn.
What the classical texts say
The corpus has no transit reading for Saturn in Aquarius itself. Advanced Predictive Astrology says Sade Sati "occurs once in 30 yrs", and the Aquarius dates show the cycle plainly: 1993-1996, then 2022-2025, then nothing before 2050. The book's exception - no Sade Sati when Saturn is a yogakaraka in the birth chart, well placed and with benefics - is a statement about the natal chart. Saturn being in its moolatrikona during the transit is a different fact, and neither the book nor the engine uses it to soften the transit verdict.
The sign itself: Saturn's moolatrikona
Aquarius is ruled by Saturn. The engine labels 0-20 degrees "Moolatrikona" and 20-30 "Own sign", following BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54. For what that means in a birth chart, see Saturn in Aquarius and the moolatrikona glossary entry. In Gochara, the house from the Moon decides the verdict and the dignity does not enter.
Worked example: a Pisces Moon from Aquarius into Pisces
Take a natal Moon in Pisces. Capricorn is its 11th, Aquarius its 12th, Pisces its 1st, Aries its 2nd. The 2022 loop shows how the opening of Sade Sati can stutter:
- To 27 April 2022: Saturn in Capricorn, the 11th - "favourable".
- 27 April 2022 to 13 July 2022: Aquarius, the 12th - Sade Sati begins, rising phase.
- 13 July 2022 to 16 January 2023: back in Capricorn, the 11th - paused.
- 16 January 2023 to 29 March 2025: Aquarius - rising phase resumes.
- From 29 March 2025: Pisces, the 1st - the peak phase, running to 2 June 2027 and again from 21 October 2027 to 22 February 2028.
As of this page's date, that peak phase is under way for a Pisces Moon; the setting phase follows as Saturn crosses Aries. The North Indian list marks the last five years as the heavier for Pisces. The engine reports only the whole-sign phase and the Gochara verdict, and the dasha running at the time is the other half of any reading - a Saturn Mahadasha and a Jupiter period, Jupiter ruling Pisces, are different settings.
Neighbouring signs: Saturn transit in Capricorn and Saturn transit in Pisces. Other slow transits through Aquarius: Jupiter transit in Aquarius and Rahu transit in Aquarius.
- When did Saturn leave Aquarius?
- On 29 March 2025 (UTC) in this app's computation, moving into Pisces. Its last stay began on 16 January 2023, after a short first visit from 27 April to 13 July 2022.
- When will Saturn be in Aquarius again?
- Not before 2050 in the engine's 1990-2050 window. Sade Sati comes round about once in thirty years, as Advanced Predictive Astrology notes.
- Which Moon signs were in Sade Sati with Saturn in Aquarius?
- Pisces (rising, Aquarius is the 12th), Aquarius (peak) and Capricorn (setting, the 2nd).
- Does Saturn in its moolatrikona make the transit easier?
- Not in this app's Gochara rule, which depends only on the house from your Moon. Moolatrikona is a natal dignity.
- Who got a favourable verdict?
- Aries, Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn Moons. Testing: Cancer, Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces. Neutral: the rest. The Gochar calculator can check any past date.
- Was the Aquarius Moon's Sade Sati over in 2025?
- Not by the whole-sign rule. Saturn leaving Aquarius on 29 March 2025 ended the peak phase for an Aquarius Moon and began the setting phase, because Pisces is the 2nd from Aquarius. In this app's dates that setting phase runs to 2 June 2027, pauses while Saturn is in Aries, and resumes from 21 October 2027 to 22 February 2028.
