In short
Saturn in Sagittarius is Saturn in the sign of Jupiter, naturally neutral to it, so it is labelled Neutral without a chart and by the fivefold relation in one. Saravali gives the sign one line and six aspect lines; the house and Lagna decide how it applies.
Saturn in Sagittarius is Saturn in the sign of Jupiter, a planet naturally neutral to it. Its label in a real chart depends on where Jupiter sits, because this app's engine uses the fivefold relation of BPHS. What the placement means is a separate question, and the classical texts answer it through the aspects on Saturn, the house Sagittarius occupies in your chart and the houses Saturn rules from your Lagna.
This page covers only the combination. For Saturn as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Saturn in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its nature, its nakshatras and what a rising Sagittarius means - see Sagittarius, Dhanu Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Saturn in Sagittarius specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Saturn in Sagittarius: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Saturn (Shani) its exaltation in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20 degrees, and its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, Mesha (Aries), at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 adds that Saturn's arrangement in Kumbha (Aquarius) is the same as the Sun's in Simha: the first 20 degrees Moolatrikona, the rest its own house. The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats all of this and adds that the whole of Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, that Mercury and Venus are its friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, and Jupiter neutral. The terms have their own entries: uchcha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation), Moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).
Sagittarius is not one of Saturn's dignity signs: it is not its exaltation (Libra), its debilitation (Aries) or its own signs (Capricorn and Aquarius). So the label comes from Saturn's relationship with the sign's lord, Jupiter. In the engine's natural table Jupiter is naturally neutral of Saturn, which is why the no-chart label below reads Neutral.
In a real chart the engine does not stop at the natural relation. It applies the fivefold (Panchadha) relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, which combines the natural relation with the temporary one of Sl. 56: a graha in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from another is its temporary friend, otherwise its temporary enemy. See naisargika maitri and tatkalika maitri. So the label for Saturn in Sagittarius depends on where Jupiter sits in the same chart:
| Natural relation | Where the lord sits | Fivefold result | Label in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neutral | Jupiter 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Saturn | Friend | Friendly sign |
| Neutral | Jupiter in any other position | Enemy | Enemy sign |
| Degrees of Sagittarius | Label without a chart (engine-facts) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Neutral | One eighth |
How the engine decides
The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the fivefold relation with the sign's lord. For Saturn in Sagittarius none of the first four tests answers, so the last step always decides, and that step reads the chart. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the steps in the same order but puts Moolatrikona a quarter below exaltation, where the engine scores them equally.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 names each step of the friendship ladder: Pramudit in a great friend's sign, Shanta in a friend's, Din in a neutral's, Duhkhit in an enemy's and Khal in a great enemy's. For Saturn in Sagittarius which of these applies depends on the same fivefold relation the engine computes.
The nakshatras Saturn moves through in Sagittarius
Sagittarius holds all four padas of Mula; all four padas of Purva Ashadha; and pada 1 of Uttara Ashadha. The nakshatra pages go further: Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Sagittarius | Degrees of Sagittarius | Saturn's label there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mula | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 13 degrees 20 minutes | Neutral without a chart; fivefold in a chart |
| Purva Ashadha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes | Neutral without a chart; fivefold in a chart |
| Uttara Ashadha | 1 | 26 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees | Neutral without a chart; fivefold in a chart |
What the classical texts say about Saturn in Sagittarius
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 17-18
Saravali's chapter on Saturn in the twelve signs gives Sagittarius one line. In paraphrase it reads: skill in conduct, in teaching, in Vedic meanings and in learning; fame through virtuous children, the family profession and one's own virtues; excellent affluence in old age; few words, many names and a soft disposition. Like every line in the chapter it describes a type, not a person, and it is a single text's view.
The neighbouring lines put it in context. The line for Saturn in Scorpio (Sl. 15-16) and the one for Saturn in Capricorn (Sl. 19-20) are set against one of the more favourable lines in the chapter.
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 55-60: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Saturn in a sign of Jupiter (Sagittarius or Pisces) under the aspect of each other planet. These lines usually decide more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:
- Aspected by the Sun: raising the children of others and gaining wealth, name and honour through them.
- Aspected by the Moon: the loss of the mother, two names, and a spouse, children and wealth.
- Aspected by Mars: "windy" complaints (the text's statement, not medical advice), dislike of people, and blame.
- Aspected by Mercury: standing equal to a king, happiness, a preceptor's role, honour, riches and fortune.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a king, or one equal to a king, a minister or an army chief, free from danger.
- Aspected by Venus: "two mothers and two fathers", life in forests and hills, unsteadiness and many assignments.
Jupiter aspecting Saturn in Jupiter's own sign gives the strongest line of the whole chapter. Mars is the only aspect that reads plainly badly. The chapter has no line for Saturn aspecting itself, and it does not say how the aspect is to be counted; the worked example below uses this app's rule.
BPHS
BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Saturn. What it says about Saturn in Sagittarius comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 forms Sasa Yoga only from Saturn's own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Saturn in Sagittarius never forms it, whatever the Lagna.
Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60, on the effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, names Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meen (Pisces) explicitly: a Saturn there, like one in a Kendra or trikona or one aspected by or joined with a benefic, gives "acquisition of a kingdom, conveyances and clothes" in the text's words. Sagittarius is one of the two signs named. Timing has its own page: Saturn Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras
The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras makes a general remark that bears on this sign: Saturn is "beneficial" in its own sign, in the signs of Jupiter and when exalted. Sagittarius is one of those signs.
In its first-house sutras (Ch. 7 Sutras 1-7), Bhrigu Sutras says a Saturn in the Lagna in the sign of the lord of the 4th or the 10th gives Maharaja yoga, "name, fame and wealth". The commentator identifies the two cases: a Sagittarius Lagna (Jupiter rules the 1st and 4th) and a Pisces Lagna (Jupiter rules the 1st and 10th). Saturn in Sagittarius in the 1st is one of them. See Saturn in the 1st house.
The commentary on the house chapters goes further and names Lagna-by-Lagna cases where Saturn's placement is read as favourable. Those that put Saturn in Sagittarius are:
- Scorpio Lagna, Saturn in the 2nd: lord of the 4th (and the 3rd, "some blemish") in the 2nd; read as well off financially (Saturn in the 2nd house).
- Aquarius Lagna, Saturn in the 11th: lord of the 1st in the 11th; a very powerful Dhana yoga (Saturn in the 11th house).
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: the dignity scheme - exaltation in Libra deepest at 20 degrees, debilitation in Aries, own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, Moolatrikona in the first 20 degrees of Aquarius (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Bhrigu Sutras).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali turns the verdict on the aspecting planet; BPHS on the house, combustion and the dasha conditions; Bhrigu Sutras on the Lagna and the houses Saturn rules.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Saturn in Sagittarius as such. Saravali is the only text in the corpus that writes one.
What Saturn rules from each Lagna, with Saturn in Sagittarius
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so from any Lagna it rules two neighbouring houses. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical: the second column is where Saturn sits, the third what it rules. The house pages, such as Saturn in the 9th house and Saturn in the 3rd house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of Saturn (Sagittarius) | Saturn rules (Capricorn, Aquarius) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 9th | 10th and 11th |
| Taurus | 8th | 9th and 10th |
| Gemini | 7th | 8th and 9th |
| Cancer | 6th | 7th and 8th |
| Leo | 5th | 6th and 7th |
| Virgo | 4th | 5th and 6th |
| Libra | 3rd | 4th and 5th |
| Scorpio | 2nd | 3rd and 4th |
| Sagittarius | 1st | 2nd and 3rd |
| Capricorn | 12th | 1st and 2nd |
| Aquarius | 11th | 12th and 1st |
| Pisces | 10th | 11th and 12th |
How often Saturn is in Sagittarius
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Saturn was in Sagittarius in 323 of them, 10.8 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share is uneven from sign to sign because Saturn's stays are long and do not divide the 75 years evenly: in the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, UTC), Saturn's stays in Sagittarius were:
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 19 June 1990 | 15 December 1990 |
| 26 January 2017 | 21 June 2017 |
| 26 October 2017 | 23 January 2020 |
| 8 December 2046 | 7 March 2049 |
| 8 July 2049 | 5 December 2049 |
The transit reading of the same sign - Saturn moving through it now, counted from your Moon - is a different subject with its own page: Saturn transit in Sagittarius.
Worked example: 21 December 1987, 05:23 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Scorpio rises at 10.68 degrees. Saturn is at 0.46 degrees of Sagittarius, in Mula pada 1, in the 2nd house, not retrograde and combust. Jupiter, the lord of Sagittarius, is in Pisces, the 4th sign from Saturn, which makes it a temporary friend. Combined with the natural neutral relation, the fivefold result is Friend, and the engine labels Saturn Friendly sign. Without the chart the label would have been Neutral - this is the case the dignity section warned about.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sagittarius 4.88 | Mula (2) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Sagittarius 8.01 | Mula (3) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Libra 23.96 | Vishakha (2) | 12 | Friendly sign |
| Mercury | Sagittarius 3.58 | Mula (2) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Pisces 26.26 | Revati (3) | 5 | Own sign |
| Venus | Capricorn 4.75 | Uttara Ashadha (3) | 3 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Sagittarius 0.46 | Mula (1) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Rahu | Pisces 4.07 | Uttara Bhadrapada (1) | 5 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Virgo 4.07 | Uttara Phalguni (3) | 11 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Scorpio Lagna, Capricorn is the 3rd house and Aquarius the 4th, so Saturn rules the 3rd and the 4th and sits in the 2nd. Saturn is also combust here - within the engine's 15-degree orb of the Sun - and combustion is one of the difficult conditions BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 lists. This exact Lagna and house is one of the Bhrigu Sutras commentator's named cases above.
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 2nd here, so none of the Sl. 55-60 lines applies and only the bare sign line does. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Sun (4.88), Moon (8.01), Mercury (3.58) share Sagittarius with Saturn. Saravali's Ch. 29 lines are about aspect, not conjunction, so this page does not add a reading for the company that the text does not give.

Checking Saturn in Sagittarius in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Saturn is in Sagittarius and read its dignity label, which depends on where Jupiter sits.
- Note the house Sagittarius occupies, and the houses Capricorn and Aquarius occupy: those are where Saturn sits and what it rules.
- Note whether Saturn is in a Kendra, a trikona or a dusthana: BPHS Ch. 47 uses all three in its dasha conditions.
- List the planets that aspect Sagittarius: any graha in the 7th sign from it, Mars in the sign 4 or 8 places before it, Jupiter in the sign 5 or 9 places before it. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 55-60 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Saturn in Sagittarius exalted?
- No. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. In Sagittarius the engine labels it Neutral without a chart, and by the fivefold relation in one. See Saturn in Libra.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Saturn in Sagittarius?
- Yes - one planet can: Jupiter, the sign's lord. Where Jupiter sits relative to Saturn decides the temporary relation, and with it the fivefold label (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56-58). Other planets change the reading through aspect, not the label.
- Does Saturn in Sagittarius give Sasa Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Saturn in its own or exaltation sign, and Sagittarius is neither.
- Which aspect matters most for Saturn in Sagittarius in Saravali?
- Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 55-60 gives six lines, one per aspecting planet. Jupiter aspecting Saturn in Jupiter's own sign gives the strongest line of the whole chapter.
- How common is Saturn in Sagittarius?
- In this app's sample it was in Sagittarius in 323 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 10.8 per cent. Because Saturn stays in a sign for long stretches, the births with this placement cluster in particular years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the aspects and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
