In short
Saturn in Taurus is Saturn in the sign of Venus, a natural friend, so it is labelled Friendly sign without a chart and by the fivefold relation in one. Saravali gives the sign one line and six aspect lines; the house and Lagna decide how it applies.
Saturn in Taurus is Saturn in the sign of Venus, a natural friend. Its label in a real chart depends on where Venus sits, because this app's engine uses the fivefold relation of BPHS. What the placement means is a separate question, and the classical texts answer it through the aspects on Saturn, the house Taurus occupies in your chart and the houses Saturn rules from your Lagna.
This page covers only the combination. For Saturn as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Saturn in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its nature, its nakshatras and what a rising Taurus means - see Taurus, Vrishabha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Saturn in Taurus specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Saturn in Taurus: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Saturn (Shani) its exaltation in Tula (Libra), deepest at 20 degrees, and its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, Mesha (Aries), at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 adds that Saturn's arrangement in Kumbha (Aquarius) is the same as the Sun's in Simha: the first 20 degrees Moolatrikona, the rest its own house. The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats all of this and adds that the whole of Capricorn is Saturn's own sign, that Mercury and Venus are its friends, the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies, and Jupiter neutral. The terms have their own entries: uchcha (exaltation), neecha (debilitation), Moolatrikona and swakshetra (own sign).
Taurus is not one of Saturn's dignity signs: it is not its exaltation (Libra), its debilitation (Aries) or its own signs (Capricorn and Aquarius). So the label comes from Saturn's relationship with the sign's lord, Venus. In the engine's natural table Venus is a natural friend of Saturn, which is why the no-chart label below reads Friendly sign.
In a real chart the engine does not stop at the natural relation. It applies the fivefold (Panchadha) relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, which combines the natural relation with the temporary one of Sl. 56: a graha in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from another is its temporary friend, otherwise its temporary enemy. See naisargika maitri and tatkalika maitri. So the label for Saturn in Taurus depends on where Venus sits in the same chart:
| Natural relation | Where the lord sits | Fivefold result | Label in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend | Venus 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Saturn | Great Friend | Friendly sign |
| Friend | Venus in any other position | Neutral | Neutral |
| Degrees of Taurus | Label without a chart (engine-facts) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Friendly sign | One quarter |
How the engine decides
The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the fivefold relation with the sign's lord. For Saturn in Taurus none of the first four tests answers, so the last step always decides, and that step reads the chart. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the steps in the same order but puts Moolatrikona a quarter below exaltation, where the engine scores them equally.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 names each step of the friendship ladder: Pramudit in a great friend's sign, Shanta in a friend's, Din in a neutral's, Duhkhit in an enemy's and Khal in a great enemy's. For Saturn in Taurus which of these applies depends on the same fivefold relation the engine computes.
The nakshatras Saturn moves through in Taurus
Taurus holds padas 2, 3, 4 of Krittika; all four padas of Rohini; and padas 1, 2 of Mrigashira. The nakshatra pages go further: Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Taurus | Degrees of Taurus | Saturn's label there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krittika | 2, 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 10 degrees | Friendly sign without a chart; fivefold in a chart |
| Rohini | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes | Friendly sign without a chart; fivefold in a chart |
| Mrigashira | 1, 2 | 23 degrees 20 minutes to 30 degrees | Friendly sign without a chart; fivefold in a chart |
What the classical texts say about Saturn in Taurus
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 3-4
Saravali's chapter on Saturn in the twelve signs gives Taurus one line. In paraphrase it reads: little wealth, a life of service, untruthful and unwelcome speech, bad friends and attachments to women, together with "strong sight" and many assignments; the line ends by calling the native a fool. Like every line in the chapter it describes a type, not a person, and it is a single text's view.
The neighbouring lines put it in context. The line for Saturn in Aries (Sl. 1-2) and the one for Saturn in Gemini (Sl. 5-6) show how much the chapter's verdict moves from one sign to the next.
Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Saturn in a sign of Venus (Taurus or Libra) under the aspect of each other planet. These lines usually decide more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:
- Aspected by the Sun: clear speech and scholarship, but loss of wealth, eating in others' houses and a weak constitution.
- Aspected by the Moon: wealth through women, honour from a king's ministers, affection and family.
- Aspected by Mars: skill in preparing for war while staying away from it, much talk, wealth and family.
- Aspected by Mercury: a joking disposition, service to women, and the word "base".
- Aspected by Jupiter: sharing the joys and sorrows of others, doing others' work, being dear to people, charitable and industrious.
- Aspected by Venus: enjoyment, gems, great strength, and favour with the king.
The tone is mostly mild in this group: four of the six lines grant wealth, family or favour, and only the Sun and Mercury lines read poorly. Venus, a natural friend of Saturn, aspecting its own sign reads as the most affluent. The chapter has no line for Saturn aspecting itself, and it does not say how the aspect is to be counted; the worked example below uses this app's rule.
BPHS
BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Saturn. What it says about Saturn in Taurus comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 forms Sasa Yoga only from Saturn's own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Saturn in Taurus never forms it, whatever the Lagna.
Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56, on the effects of Saturn's Mahadasha, includes a Saturn in a "friendly Rashi" among the favourable conditions; whether Taurus counts as one in a given chart is exactly the fivefold question above. Timing has its own page: Saturn Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras
The Saturn chapter of Bhrigu Sutras makes a general remark that bears on this sign: Saturn is "beneficial" in its own sign, in the signs of Jupiter and when exalted. Taurus is not one of them, and the text does not single it out either way.
The commentary on the house chapters goes further and names Lagna-by-Lagna cases where Saturn's placement is read as favourable. Those that put Saturn in Taurus are:
- Aries Lagna, Saturn in the 2nd: lord of the 10th and 11th in the 2nd; the commentator reads the native as well off financially (Saturn in the 2nd house).
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: the dignity scheme - exaltation in Libra deepest at 20 degrees, debilitation in Aries, own signs Capricorn and Aquarius, Moolatrikona in the first 20 degrees of Aquarius (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Bhrigu Sutras).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali turns the verdict on the aspecting planet; BPHS on the house, combustion and the dasha conditions; Bhrigu Sutras on the Lagna and the houses Saturn rules.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Saturn in Taurus as such. Saravali is the only text in the corpus that writes one.
What Saturn rules from each Lagna, with Saturn in Taurus
Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so from any Lagna it rules two neighbouring houses. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical: the second column is where Saturn sits, the third what it rules. The house pages, such as Saturn in the 2nd house and Saturn in the 8th house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of Saturn (Taurus) | Saturn rules (Capricorn, Aquarius) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 2nd | 10th and 11th |
| Taurus | 1st | 9th and 10th |
| Gemini | 12th | 8th and 9th |
| Cancer | 11th | 7th and 8th |
| Leo | 10th | 6th and 7th |
| Virgo | 9th | 5th and 6th |
| Libra | 8th | 4th and 5th |
| Scorpio | 7th | 3rd and 4th |
| Sagittarius | 6th | 2nd and 3rd |
| Capricorn | 5th | 1st and 2nd |
| Aquarius | 4th | 12th and 1st |
| Pisces | 3rd | 11th and 12th |
How often Saturn is in Taurus
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Saturn was in Taurus in 204 of them, 6.8 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share is uneven from sign to sign because Saturn's stays are long and do not divide the 75 years evenly: in the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, UTC), Saturn's stays in Taurus were:
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 7 June 2000 | 24 July 2002 |
| 6 January 2003 | 9 April 2003 |
| 6 August 2029 | 6 October 2029 |
| 16 April 2030 | 30 May 2032 |
The transit reading of the same sign - Saturn moving through it now, counted from your Moon - is a different subject with its own page: Saturn transit in Taurus.
Worked example: 9 June 2000, 17:43 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Scorpio rises at 5.52 degrees. Saturn is at 0.21 degrees of Taurus, in Krittika pada 2, in the 7th house, not retrograde and not combust. Venus, the lord of Taurus, is in Taurus, the 1st sign from Saturn, which makes it a temporary enemy. Combined with the natural friend relation, the fivefold result is Neutral, and the engine labels Saturn Neutral. Without the chart the label would have been Friendly sign - this is the case the dignity section warned about.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Taurus 25.1 | Mrigashira (1) | 7 | Enemy sign |
| Moon | Leo 29.62 | Uttara Phalguni (1) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 1.43 | Mrigashira (3) | 8 | Enemy sign |
| Mercury | Gemini 19.12 | Ardra (4) | 8 | Own sign |
| Jupiter | Taurus 1.66 | Krittika (2) | 7 | Enemy sign |
| Venus | Taurus 24.59 | Mrigashira (1) | 7 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Taurus 0.21 | Krittika (2) | 7 | Neutral |
| Rahu | Cancer 2.71 | Punarvasu (4) | 9 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Capricorn 2.71 | Uttara Ashadha (2) | 3 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Scorpio Lagna, Capricorn is the 3rd house and Aquarius the 4th, so Saturn rules the 3rd and the 4th and sits in the 7th. The 7th is a Kendra, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 counts in Saturn's favour.
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 7th here, so none of the Sl. 31-36 lines applies and only the bare sign line does. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Sun (25.1), Jupiter (1.66), Venus (24.59) share Taurus with Saturn. Saravali's Ch. 29 lines are about aspect, not conjunction, so this page does not add a reading for the company that the text does not give.

Checking Saturn in Taurus in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Saturn is in Taurus and read its dignity label, which depends on where Venus sits.
- Note the house Taurus occupies, and the houses Capricorn and Aquarius occupy: those are where Saturn sits and what it rules.
- Note whether Saturn is in a Kendra, a trikona or a dusthana: BPHS Ch. 47 uses all three in its dasha conditions.
- List the planets that aspect Taurus: any graha in the 7th sign from it, Mars in the sign 4 or 8 places before it, Jupiter in the sign 5 or 9 places before it. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Saturn in Taurus exalted?
- No. Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries. In Taurus the engine labels it Friendly sign without a chart, and by the fivefold relation in one. See Saturn in Libra.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Saturn in Taurus?
- Yes - one planet can: Venus, the sign's lord. Where Venus sits relative to Saturn decides the temporary relation, and with it the fivefold label (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56-58). Other planets change the reading through aspect, not the label.
- Does Saturn in Taurus give Sasa Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Saturn in its own or exaltation sign, and Taurus is neither.
- Which aspect matters most for Saturn in Taurus in Saravali?
- Saravali Ch. 29 Sl. 31-36 gives six lines, one per aspecting planet. The tone is mostly mild in this group: four of the six lines grant wealth, family or favour, and only the Sun and Mercury lines read poorly.
- How common is Saturn in Taurus?
- In this app's sample it was in Taurus in 204 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 6.8 per cent. Because Saturn stays in a sign for long stretches, the births with this placement cluster in particular years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the aspects and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
