In short
The KP system, or Krishnamurti Paddhati, is a modern method of Indian astrology that reads the sub-lords of nakshatras and of house cusps, computed with its own ayanamsa. This app does not implement KP. Its nakshatra sub-lord uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses, so KP users may see different answers near a boundary.
What the term means
KP stands for Krishnamurti Paddhati, "Krishnamurti's method". It cuts each nakshatra into nine unequal slices in proportion to the Vimshottari years, giving every point of the zodiac a sub-lord, and it reads those sub-lords for planets and for house cusps. It uses its own ayanamsa, the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs.
Where the term comes from
KP is a modern system, not a classical one, and none of the classical texts in the project's library mention it: a search of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras finds nothing. BPHS splits a dasha period in proportion to the lords' years, but it never divides a nakshatra's arc that way. The only mention in the library is in a later case-study book, whose publishers' note says the Krishnamurthy ayanamsa is "very close to Lahiri" and prints the sub lord for "K.P. followers". It gives no numeric value for that ayanamsa.
How this app uses it
- The engine does not implement KP, and the code says so in as many words: "THIS IS NOT KP".
- The nakshatra sub-lord calculator applies the same proportional split to arc, but with the Lahiri ayanamsa used everywhere else on the site, because no KP value exists in the library.
- The difference matters at this scale. A sub is at most 133 arcminutes wide, and an ayanamsa shift of D arcminutes changes the sub-lord on D/88.9 of the zodiac. That is why every result shows its distance to the next boundary.
- KP reads the sub-lords of house cusps. This app draws whole-sign houses and computes no cusps, so it has no cusp sub-lords to show.
