In short
A Kundali is the birth chart: the positions of the nine grahas, and, when the birth time and place are known, the rising sign and the twelve houses, for one moment and place. This app computes it fresh from the stored birth details each time and draws it in both North and South Indian styles.
What the term means
A Kundali (also spelled Kundli) is the chart of the sky for one birth. In this app it is a single computed record. For each of the nine grahas it holds the sidereal longitude, the sign and the degree within it, the nakshatra, its lord and the pada, and whether the graha is retrograde or combust. When the birth time and the birth place are both known it also holds the Lagna and the twelve houses counted from it, plus the Vimshottari dasha timeline from the Moon.
Where the term comes from
BPHS uses the word for the drawn chart rather than defining it. The translator's note to Ch. 3 Sl. 56 says the temporary friendships apply to "a given Janm Kundali", the birth chart. Ch. 5 Sl. 9 asks for a separate Bhava Kundali for each special Lagna, the grahas kept where they were at birth. Ch. 21 Sl. 16 speaks of the 10th house in the Navansh Kundali, a divisional chart. Ch. 46 Sl. 54-55 describes how one is drawn: vertical and horizontal lines making twelve apartments, with the rashis fixed in them in order.
How this app computes it
- One function builds every chart, and every astrology calculator calls it, so two calculators cannot disagree about where a graha is.
- The Lagna and houses are built only when there is a birth time and a resolved place. Without a time the record still carries the nine grahas; it simply has no rising sign and no houses. Run for 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the engine returns a Pisces Lagna at 23.04 degrees and the Moon in Sagittarius in the 10th house; asked for the same moment with no time, it returns the same Moon and no Lagna at all.
- Houses are whole signs counted from the Lagna, and divisional charts such as the Navamsa are derived from the same record.
- Nothing is stored as a finished chart: it is recomputed from the birth details each time it is shown, and the Kundali screen draws it in both North and South Indian styles.
