In short
The Saptavimshamsa, or D27, also called the Nakshatramsa or Bhamsa, is the divisional chart made by cutting each sign into twenty-seven parts. BPHS gives its parts the deities of the 27 nakshatras and reads "strength and weakness" from it. This app starts each sign's count from the movable sign of its element.
What the term means
Saptavimshamsa means "twenty-seventh part". It is the varga made by cutting each 30-degree sign into twenty-seven parts of 1°06'40" and assigning each part a sign. The number 27 is the number of nakshatras, which is why BPHS also calls it the Nakshatramsa or Bhamsa.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 24-26 makes the lords of the 27 parts the presiding deities of the 27 nakshatras, counted in reverse for an even sign, and says the distribution "commences from Mesh and other Movable" signs. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns it "strength and weakness". The starting-sign phrase can be read two ways, and that is the one place where this varga needs a choice.
How this app computes it
- The part is the degree within the sign divided by 30/27, rounded down (parts 1 to 27).
- The engine reads "Mesh and other Movable" signs by element: fire signs count from Aries, earth signs from Cancer, air signs from Libra and water signs from Capricorn, each the movable sign of its element. Its code notes that this is the same as one continuous count of 27 parts per sign from 0° Aries, and that it replaced an earlier "always from Aries" reading.
- The D27 sign is one of the sixteen placements in this app's Vimshopaka bala (weight 0.5 of 20). The deity names are not returned.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Moon is at Sagittarius 12.66. Sagittarius is a fire sign, so the count starts at Aries; 12.66 degrees is the twelfth part, eleven signs on, which is Pisces. The Sun at Capricorn 5.46 is in an earth sign, so the count starts at Cancer, and the fifth part lands on Scorpio.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
