In short

The Trimshamsa, or D30, divides each sign into five unequal bands of 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5 degrees, ruled in an odd sign by Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus and reversed in an even sign. BPHS reads "evil effects" from it. This app reports the ruling planet for each point rather than a twelve-house chart.

What the term means

Trimshamsa means "thirtieth part", but unlike the other vargas it does not cut the sign into thirty equal pieces. It uses five bands of unequal width, each ruled by one of the five non-luminary grahas. The Sun and the Moon rule no band.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 27-28 gives the scheme for an odd sign: Mangal, Shani, Guru, Budh and Shukr rule 5, 5, 8, 7 and 5 degrees in that order; "in the case of an even" sign the spans, the lords and the deities are reversed. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assigns the chart "evil effects", the translation's phrase. Ch. 7 Sl. 13-16 adds that for Trimshamsa effects the Sun behaves like Mars and the Moon like Venus. It is one of the six Shad Varga charts and carries a Vimshopak weight of 1 in both the six- and sixteen-chart schemes.

The bands in computeTrimshamsaLords(), from BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 27-28.
  • For each planet and the Ascendant the engine returns the band's lord and whether that lord is a natural benefic. The calculator shows these lords; it draws no D30 house wheel, because BPHS defines the D30 by lordship, not by a sign the point moves to.
  • For grading in Vimshopaka bala the engine also attaches a sign, the lord's own odd-footed sign for an odd sign and its even-footed sign for an even one. Its code says this is a convention the text does not state.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Sun is at Capricorn 5.46. Capricorn is even, so 5.46 falls in the 5-12 band of Mercury, graded as Virgo. The Moon at Sagittarius 12.66 is in an odd sign's 10-18 band, ruled by Jupiter. Mars at Aquarius 25.40 sits in the last band of an odd sign, ruled by Venus.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
