Hora (D2) defined: each sign split into two halves ruled by the Sun and the Moon, the BPHS rule for odd and even signs, and how this app computes it.

In short

The Hora, or D2, is the divisional chart that splits every sign into two halves of 15 degrees. In an odd sign the first half is the Sun's hora and the second the Moon's; in an even sign the order is reversed. BPHS reads wealth from it, and this app maps the Sun's hora to Leo and the Moon's to Cancer.

What the term means

The Hora is the second of the sixteen vargas: half a sign. Every 30-degree sign has two horas of 15 degrees, one ruled by the Sun and one by the Moon, so the D2 has only two possible signs, Leo for the Sun's hora and Cancer for the Moon's. It is not the same thing as the planetary hora of the day, an hour ruled by a planet, which shares the name.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 5-6: the first half of an odd sign is the hora of the Sun and the second half the hora of the Moon, reversed for an even sign, giving 24 horas round the zodiac. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 reads "wealth from Hora". Sl. 13-16 add that Jupiter, the Sun and Mars give pronounced results in the Sun's hora, the Moon, Venus and Saturn in the Moon's, and Mercury in either. In the sixteen-varga strength scheme the Hora carries a weight of 1 out of 20.

How this app uses it

  • Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius): below 15 degrees is the Sun's hora, from 15 degrees the Moon's. Even signs: the reverse.
  • Each point is reported with its hora lord and sign (Sun and Leo, or Moon and Cancer), not as a twelve-house chart, since only two signs occur.
  • The Hora sign feeds the Vimshopaka bala score with a weight of 1.
  • The calculator asks for full birth details; the Ascendant's hora needs the birth time.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Moon at Sagittarius 12.66 is in the first half of an odd sign, so it is in the Sun's hora (Leo). The Sun at Capricorn 5.46 is in the first half of an even sign, so it is in the Moon's hora (Cancer). The Ascendant at Pisces 23.04, in the second half of an even sign, falls in the Sun's hora.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
