How these dates are worked out
The Amavasya day is the day whose sunrise at New Delhi falls in Amavasya, the 30th tithi, at the end of the Krishna fortnight - the first such day if there are two, the day it begins if there is none. An Amavasya on a Monday is Somvati Amavasya, on a Saturday Shani Amavasya.
The tithi is the angle the Moon has moved ahead of the Sun, in 12-degree steps, on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa; sunrise and sunset are for New Delhi's coordinates. The lunar month is named by the sign the Sun is in when it begins. The methodology page says how the engine is checked.
Questions about Amavasya in 2027
- How many Amavasya are there in 2027?
- 13 new-moon tithis fall in calendar 2027.
- When is Somvati Amavasya in 2027?
- An Amavasya day that is a Monday is Somvati Amavasya. In 2027: 8 March, 2 August, 27 December. Shani Amavasya, on a Saturday: 6 February.
- How is the Amavasya day decided?
- The Amavasya day is the day whose sunrise at New Delhi falls in Amavasya, the 30th tithi, at the end of the Krishna fortnight - the first such day if there are two, the day it begins if there is none. An Amavasya on a Monday is Somvati Amavasya, on a Saturday Shani Amavasya.
- Are rites for ancestors kept on the same day?
- Not always. Shraddha and the darsha observance look at the afternoon rather than the sunrise, so they can fall on the day before the Amavasya day listed here, when Amavasya begins before that afternoon. This page lists the Amavasya day itself.
- Why is the same date filed under two different months?
- North Indian calendars (purnimanta) end the lunar month at the full moon; South and West Indian ones (amanta) at the new moon. The Shukla fortnight has the same month name in both, but the Krishna fortnight belongs to the next month in a purnimanta calendar - so this page gives the purnimanta month and adds the amanta one where they differ.
- Do these dates apply outside New Delhi?
- They are computed for sunrise and sunset at New Delhi. Across India most dates are the same, but where a tithi changes close to sunrise or sunset another city - and more often a city abroad, on its own clock - can keep the observance a day earlier or later. The panchang calculator gives the tithi for any date and place.
