Questions about this calendar
- How is this calendar calculated?
- Each day is computed by this site's engine for New Delhi: sunrise and sunset from the standard astronomical formula, and the tithi and the Moon's nakshatra at that sunrise on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. The vrat days come from the rules on the vrat date pages.
- Is this a purnimanta or an amanta calendar?
- Both are given. Each month page lists the amanta months it spans, new moon to new moon, and its day table names the month as a North Indian purnimanta calendar does, where the Krishna fortnight belongs to the next month.
- Why is the tithi given at sunrise?
- A printed panchang names a day by the tithi current at local sunrise, even if it ends an hour later. This calendar does the same for New Delhi; the panchang calculator gives the tithi at any moment.
- Do these dates apply outside New Delhi?
- They are computed for sunrise and sunset at New Delhi. Across India most days have the same tithi, but where a tithi changes close to sunrise another city - and more often a city abroad - can have a different one. The panchang calculator gives the tithi for any date and place.
