Where calendars can differ

  • Jyeshtha Purnima, Mon, 29 Jun

Purnima is still current at the next sunrise, until 5:29 AM, 30 Jun; the first day is listed. The tithi changes within 10 minutes of sunrise, so an almanac that computes it a few minutes differently can show the neighbouring day.

  • Margashirsha Purnima, Wed, 23 Dec

Purnima begins after sunrise and ends before the next sunrise; it is listed on the day it begins.

How these dates are worked out

The Purnima day is the day whose sunrise at New Delhi falls in Purnima, the 15th tithi of the Shukla fortnight - the first such day if there are two, the day it begins if there is none. The Purnima vrat is kept a day earlier when Purnima begins on that day before the end of madhyahna, the middle fifth of its daylight: Chaturdashi then no longer holds the middle of the day.

The tithi is the angle the Moon has moved ahead of the Sun, in 12-degree steps, on the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa; sunrise and sunset are for New Delhi's coordinates. The lunar month is named by the sign the Sun is in when it begins, and 2026 has an adhika (extra) month, Jyeshtha, from 17 May to 15 June. The methodology page says how the engine is checked.

Questions about Purnima in 2026

How many Purnima are there in 2026?
13 full-moon tithis fall in calendar 2026, one of them in the adhika (extra) month of Jyeshtha.
Why is the Purnima vrat sometimes a day before the Purnima date?
The Purnima day is named by the tithi at sunrise, but the vrat needs Purnima through the middle of the day. When Purnima begins before the end of madhyahna on the day before, that day is the vrat day. In 2026 that happens 4 times: 1 April for the Chaitra Purnima, 30 May for the Adhika Jyeshtha Purnima, 27 August for the Shravana Purnima, 25 October for the Ashwin Purnima.
How is the Purnima day decided?
The Purnima day is the day whose sunrise at New Delhi falls in Purnima, the 15th tithi of the Shukla fortnight - the first such day if there are two, the day it begins if there is none. The Purnima vrat is kept a day earlier when Purnima begins on that day before the end of madhyahna, the middle fifth of its daylight: Chaturdashi then no longer holds the middle of the day.
Which Purnima are Guru Purnima, Buddha Purnima and Sharad Purnima?
Ashadha Purnima is Guru Purnima, Vaishakha Purnima is Buddha Purnima, Ashwin Purnima is Sharad Purnima and Kartika Purnima is Kartik Purnima. A festival kept on a Purnima can follow its own timing rule - a night observance looks at the evening, not the sunrise - so its day can be the vrat day rather than the Purnima day.
Do these dates apply outside New Delhi?
They are computed for sunrise and sunset at New Delhi. Across India most dates are the same, but where a tithi changes close to sunrise or sunset another city - and more often a city abroad, on its own clock - can keep the observance a day earlier or later. The panchang calculator gives the tithi for any date and place.
