In short
The Chaturvimshamsa, or D24, is the divisional chart made by cutting each sign into twenty-four parts of 1°15'. BPHS starts the count from Leo for an odd sign and from Cancer for an even sign, and reads "learning" from it. This app computes it for every planet and, with a birth time, the Ascendant.
What the term means
Chaturvimshamsa means "twenty-fourth part". It is the varga made by cutting each 30-degree sign into twenty-four parts of 1°15' and assigning each part a sign. Its count does not start from the sign itself (Leo and Cancer apart): every odd sign starts from Leo and every even sign from Cancer, the signs of the Sun and the Moon.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 22-23 says the distribution "commences from Simh and Kark" for an odd and an even sign respectively, and lists twelve presiding deities that repeat twice, in reverse for an even sign. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 gives the chart its subject, "learning". Since 24 parts run through all twelve signs exactly twice, each sign's D24 visits every sign two times. In the sixteen-chart Vimshopak scheme of Ch. 7 Sl. 21-25 it is one of the nine divisions weighted half a point.
How this app computes it
- The part is the degree within the sign divided by 1.25, rounded down (parts 1 to 24).
- An odd sign (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius) starts from Leo; an even sign starts from Cancer. The count moves one sign per part.
- The D24 sign is one of the sixteen placements graded in this app's Vimshopaka bala (weight 0.5 of 20). Same-sign D1 and D24 is flagged vargottama; D24 houses need the Ascendant.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Moon is at Sagittarius 12.66. Sagittarius is odd, so the count starts at Leo; 12.66 degrees is the eleventh part, ten signs on from Leo, which is Gemini. The Sun at Capricorn 5.46 is in an even sign, so the count starts at Cancer, and the fifth part lands on Scorpio. No planet in this chart is vargottama in the D24.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
