In short

Ishta devata, the "personal deity", is the popular name for the worship reading drawn from the 12th sign counted from the Karakamsa. BPHS Ch. 33 reads worship there only from the grahas occupying that sign, never from its lord. This app computes the sign, its lord and its occupants, reports the clauses the text gives, and never names a deity for a person.

What the term means

Ishta devata means one's personal deity. In popular Jyotish practice it is read from the 12th sign counted from the Karakamsa, often by taking that sign's lord and mapping it to a deity. This app treats the term as a name for that sign and the reading attached to it, not as a verdict on anyone's faith.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 63-74 is the passage in this app's library that ties the 12th from the Karakamsa to worship, and it reads only occupancy: the Sun with Ketu there points to Shiva, the Moon with Ketu to Gauri, Venus with Ketu to Lakshmi, Mars with Ketu to Subramanya, and Ketu alone to Subramanya or Ganesh. It never derives a deity from the sign's lord. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 18 does list a deity for each graha, but as a planetary attribute, and joining the two would state a rule neither chapter states. The translation uses the phrase only as "Isht Dev" or "Isht Lord", three times, in the chapters on sub-period effects, and none of the three says how to find it from a chart.

How this app uses it

  • The 12th sign from the Karakamsa is computed, with its lord and that lord's placement.
  • Its occupants are listed twice, in the Navamsa and in the birth chart, because the text supports both and never chooses.
  • Every BPHS clause that fires is shown: benefic or malefic occupants, a vacant sign, and the Ketu combinations above.
  • No deity is named from the lord, and clauses on enlightenment, heaven and "mean deities" are left out.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, the Karakamsa is Taurus, so the 12th from it is Aries, ruled by Mars. In the Navamsa, Venus sits in Aries, which fires the benefic clause ("expenses on good account"); in the birth chart Aries is empty ("good effects follow"). Ketu is in neither, so no worship clause fires and the app names no deity.
