In short
The Kua number is a Feng Shui number taken from the birth year and the person's gender. This app reduces the year to one digit, subtracts it from 11 for men or adds 4 for women, and converts a result of 5, counting a birth before 5 February in the previous year. The number names four favourable compass directions.
What the term means
The Kua number is a single digit from 1 to 9, other than 5, worked out from the year of birth and from whether the person is male or female. It comes from Feng Shui rather than Vedic numerology, and its use is to name four directions said to suit the person. Unlike the Mulank, it ignores the day and month except to settle which year counts.
Where the term comes from
Among the corpus books only the AIFAS Numerology Masters Notes (p.183-186) treats it. The book reduces the birth year to one digit, takes it from 11 for a man and adds 4 for a woman, and works the year 1965 to a Kua of 8 for a man and 7 for a woman. It calls 5 "a non-existent Kua number" and converts it to 2 for men and 8 for women. It also says a birth before the Chinese first day of spring belongs to the previous year.
How this app computes it
- The engine takes 5 February as the first day of spring, since the book gives no exact date per year. A birth before it uses the previous year.
- The year's digits are reduced with a plain digit sum, then the male or female formula is applied and reduced again. A 5 becomes 2 or 8, and the answer records that it was converted.
- It returns four directions, for money and success, health, love and personal growth, with the book's notes on facing, sleeping and entering from them.
- Gender is asked only for this calculator. With no answer the engine returns nothing rather than guessing, because the source gives no neutral formula.
A small illustration
For 15 July 1990 the year digits give 1. A man's Kua is 11 - 1 = 10, reduced to 1; a woman's is 1 + 4 = 5, which the engine converts to 8. For 20 January 1990, before 5 February, the engine reads 1989 instead, so the man's Kua is 2 and the woman's 4.

What it needs
Birth date and the Kua input
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
