In short
Mulank, also spelled Moolank and called the birth, psychic or driver number, is the day of the month you were born on, added digit by digit until one digit from 1 to 9 is left. This app never keeps a master number for it, so a birth on the 29th gives 2. The Mulank sets the starting lord of the numerology dasha and the ruling planet behind the favourables list.
What the term means
Mulank, also spelled Moolank, is the number of the day you were born on, from 1 to 31, reduced to a single digit. Only the day is read: the month and year play no part, which is what separates it from the Bhagyank. A birth on the 1st, 10th, 19th or 28th gives Mulank 1; a birth on the 9th, 18th or 27th gives Mulank 9.
Where the term comes from
Advanced Vedic Numerology (p.13-14) spells it Moolank, calls it the psychic number, and tells the reader to sum "only birth date (1 to 31)" until one digit remains. The same page pairs it with the Bhagyank: the Moolank is read as one's nature, the Bhagyank as what happens to one. The AIFAS course notes (p.18) list it under four names at once, Basic, Moolank, Psychic and Driver number, and Vedic Numerology Basic calls it the basic, psychic or ruling number. The books agree on the arithmetic; they differ only in what they call it.
How this app computes it
- The engine adds the digits of the day with a plain digit sum and stops at one digit. Unlike the Bhagyank, it does not stop at a master number: an 11th or a 29th becomes 2, a 22nd becomes 4.
- The Mulank's ruling planet (Sun for 1, Moon for 2, Jupiter for 3, Rahu for 4, Mercury for 5, Venus for 6, Ketu for 7, Saturn for 8, Mars for 9) drives the favourable days, colours, letters, numbers and dates on the Numerology page.
- It picks where the numerology dasha starts, and it is one of the four terms in the Vedic Personal Year.
- The raw day is also checked for a karmic debt number (13, 14, 16 or 19) before it is reduced.
A small illustration
For 19 July 1996 the engine reads only the 19: 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1, so the Mulank is 1. For 29 January 1990 the day gives 2 + 9 = 11, and the engine reduces again to 2, where a Bhagyank of 11 would have been kept.
