In short
Chakra Yoga is the Nabhasa shape in which the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn occupy the six alternate houses from the ascendant - the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th - with every one of them filled. It never formed in 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, nor anywhere in the engine's 20,000-moment walk to 2483. The texts give it the most exalted reading among the Nabhasa yogas.
Chakra means wheel, and Chakra Yoga is one of the two alternate-house shapes among the Nabhasa yogas. Instead of crowding the seven grahas into a block, it asks them to skip: one sign occupied, the next empty, all the way round, starting from the rising sign. The classical texts give it the grandest reading in the chapter. The engine, run over a deterministic walk of 20,000 birth moments from 1985 to 2483, never found it once. This page explains the rule, why it is so close to impossible, and what the texts say - and, because there is no real chart to show, it describes the arrangement in words. For what any yoga can bear, see what a yoga in your chart means.
The rule: how Chakra Yoga forms
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 15: if all the grahas occupy six alternative rasis commencing from the Lagna, Chakra Yoga is formed. Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 16 says the same. The engine checks:
- The seven grahas, Sun to Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not counted.
- Houses are whole signs from the ascendant, so a house is a rasi and "alternative rasis from the Lagna" are the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th houses.
- Every graha is in one of those six houses; the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th hold none of them.
- All six of those houses are occupied. Seven grahas in six houses means exactly one house holds two and the other five hold one each.
As with every Akriti shape, nothing about dignity, aspect or combustion enters the test, and no single planet owns the result.
The reading that makes it so strict
The sloka says the grahas "occupy six alternative Rasis". Read loosely, that could mean only that every graha is in an odd-numbered house, some of those houses perhaps empty. The engine reads it strictly - all six occupied - for the same reason it reads every Akriti rule that way: under the loose reading one cluster could satisfy several shapes at once. The difference is large here. On the engine's positions, all seven grahas sat only in odd-numbered houses in 18 of the 3,000 sampled moments (124 of the 20,000), but filled all six in none.
Two more choices follow the engine's general Nabhasa rules: only the seven grahas count, as in Saravali Ch. 21; and every forming yoga is reported, so a Chakra chart - six signs occupied - would also show Damini Yoga, which BPHS Sl. 16-17 would set aside.
Why it almost never happens
The obstacle is the two inner planets. Mercury never gets more than about one sign away from the Sun, and Venus never more than about two. Across all 20,000 moments of the engine's walk, Mercury was never more than one sign from the Sun's sign and Venus never more than two. In an alternate-house shape, neighbouring signs cannot both be occupied. Follow the consequences:
- Mercury cannot be in a sign next to the Sun, because that sign must be empty. So Mercury must share the Sun's sign.
- That pair uses up the one house allowed to hold two grahas. Every other graha must be alone in its house.
- Venus cannot join the Sun and Mercury (that would leave too few grahas to fill all six houses) and cannot sit in a neighbouring sign. So Venus must be exactly two signs from the Sun, near the far edge of its range.
- The Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn must then occupy the remaining four alternate signs, one each - and the rising sign must be one of the six occupied ones.
Each step is a narrow condition. The first two together - Mercury in the Sun's sign and Venus two signs away - held in 271 of the 3,000 sampled moments. Adding the four outer bodies, each required in one particular sign, is what drives the count to zero. Saturn and Jupiter move slowly, so their spacing is set for months or years at a time; the Moon must be in the one remaining sign for its two or three days there; and the ascendant must be in an occupied sign for the right hours of that day.
The result is a real finding about rarity: in 20,000 deterministic moments spanning nearly five centuries, the engine found no Chakra Yoga at all. That does not prove the arrangement never occurs in those years - the walk samples one moment roughly every nine days - but it does show how thin the target is.
Chakra and Samudra are twins
BPHS gives Chakra and Samudra Yoga in the same sloka. Both need the seven grahas spread over six alternate signs with all six occupied. The only difference is which six: Chakra if the rising sign is one of the occupied ones, Samudra if it is one of the empty ones. So the same planetary arrangement produces one or the other depending only on the hour.
The engine's walk did meet that arrangement once, as Samudra, on 14 September 2293. A scratch run of the engine on that same day, every 20 minutes, shows the twin directly: Samudra while Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces or Taurus rises, and Chakra while Sagittarius, Aquarius or Aries rises - from 13:40 to 15:20 IST, from 17:20 to 18:20, and from 20:20 to 21:40. This is the engine's computation for a date centuries away, not a forecast for anyone; it simply shows that Chakra is reachable, and that the walk missed those hours by the luck of its nine-day step.
What the classical texts say about Chakra
No other Nabhasa yoga gets a grander reading. BPHS Sl. 41 describes an emperor at whose feet other kings prostrate, their gem-studded diadems bowed. Saravali Sl. 35 gives the same image - a king honoured by subordinate kings wearing diamond-studded crowns - and its translator adds a gloss making the same point in plain words. The two texts agree; there is no disagreement to report.
The app's sentence keeps the rank without the court: "Classically read as exceptional standing and influence - classically among the most exalted of the Nabhasa Yogas." The second clause is the engine's own comparison, and it matches the texts: where BPHS Sl. 30 says the native of Kamala Yoga "will be a king", Sl. 41 puts the native of Chakra above kings.
Saravali Sl. 8-10 gives every Akriti yoga a general reading - contentment with one's own fortune, earnings through a king, fame - and BPHS Sl. 50 and Saravali Sl. 20-21 say the Nabhasa results are felt in all periods rather than one dasha. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's yoga chapter (pages 145 to 154 of the scanned edition in the library) has no Nabhasa section; Advanced Predictive Astrology and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention Chakra Yoga.
Worked example: no chart, so the shape in words
The engine-facts run that supplies every other worked example on these pages searched the first 20,000 moments of the walk for a Chakra Yoga and found none, so there is no engine chart to show here, and this page does not invent degrees or dates. Instead, here is one arrangement that would satisfy the rule, described in words and checked against each condition.
- The Sun and Mercury together in the rising sign, the 1st house.
- Venus two signs ahead of them, alone in the 3rd house.
- The Moon alone in the 5th, Mars alone in the 7th, Jupiter alone in the 9th and Saturn alone in the 11th.
- Nothing among the seven in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th. Rahu and Ketu anywhere, since they are not counted.
- All seven are in odd-numbered houses. Holds.
- All six odd-numbered houses are occupied: the 1st by two, the rest by one each. Holds.
- Mercury shares the Sun's sign and Venus is two signs away, both within their real limits. Holds.
- The engine would report the yoga with the houses 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and its sentence on exceptional standing.
Shift the same arrangement so that the rising sign is the empty sign just before the Sun's, and every house number goes up by one: the occupied houses become 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, and the yoga becomes Samudra. Move one graha into a neighbouring sign - say Mercury slips one sign ahead of the Sun - and both shapes fail, because two adjacent signs would then be occupied.
You can test this sort of arrangement against any real date in the birth chart calculator, which shows every graha's whole-sign house.
Chakra beside its neighbours
Chakra uses two kendras, the 1st and 7th, and two trikonas, the 5th and 9th, plus the 3rd and 11th. It cannot coincide with Kamala (all seven in the four kendras) or any block shape, since those need adjacent houses or even-numbered houses occupied. It also cannot coincide with Maala or Sarpa Yoga, which need three kendras occupied; Chakra leaves the 4th and 10th empty. Of the Sankhya yogas it always comes with Damini, six signs occupied.
What a yoga does not tell you
Chakra Yoga is a statement that the seven grahas are spaced evenly round the chart, every other sign, starting from the rising sign. The classical texts attach the most splendid reading in the chapter to it. That reading is a claim made about a geometric pattern the engine never met in 20,000 sampled moments; it is not a description of anyone, and the texts tie it to no period. If you see a claim that some chart "has Chakra Yoga", the first thing to check is whether all six alternate houses are really occupied, and whether Mercury really shares the Sun's sign.
To test any chart for Chakra and the other Nabhasa shapes, run the yoga calculator; it lists each graha's house, so you can check the alternate-house pattern yourself.
Questions about Chakra Yoga
- What is the rule for Chakra Yoga?
- All seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th houses from the ascendant, with all six of those houses occupied. BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 15 and Saravali Ch. 21 Sl. 16.
- How rare is Chakra Yoga?
- The engine found none in 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, and none in its full walk of 20,000 moments from 1985 to 2483.
- Why is it so rare?
- Neighbouring signs cannot both be occupied, and Mercury is never more than about one sign from the Sun. So Mercury must share the Sun's sign, Venus must be exactly two signs away, and the four other grahas must each sit alone in one particular alternate sign.
- What is the difference between Chakra and Samudra Yoga?
- Only the rising sign. Both need the seven grahas spread over six alternate signs with all six occupied. If the ascendant is one of the occupied signs it is Chakra; if it is one of the empty signs it is Samudra.
- What do the texts say Chakra Yoga gives?
- BPHS Sl. 41 and Saravali Sl. 35 describe an emperor honoured by other kings. This app reads it as exceptional standing and influence, among the most exalted of the Nabhasa yogas, and treats it as a rule about positions rather than a promise.
- Do Rahu and Ketu matter for Chakra Yoga?
- No. The engine counts only the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, following Saravali Ch. 21's "seven planets". The nodes are always six signs apart, so both fall in odd houses or both in even houses; either way they neither help nor block the shape.
- Why is there no real chart on this page?
- Every other worked example on these pages is the first moment in the engine's deterministic walk that forms the yoga. For Chakra the walk found none in 20,000 moments, so the page describes a qualifying arrangement in words instead of inventing positions.
- An astrologer says my chart has Chakra Yoga, but this app does not. Why?
- Most often because a looser reading is being used - all planets in odd houses, without every one of the six being occupied. That looser pattern appeared in 18 of 3,000 sampled moments; the strict rule in none. A different ayanamsa or house system can also move a graha across a boundary.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
