In short

The 3 box in a Lo Shu grid counts every 3 in the written birth date. Only five days of the month and one month contain a 3, and no 1900s or 2000s year begins with one, so the box is empty on 15,690 of the 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010. The books read one 3 as excellent and two as creative.

The Lo Shu grid records how many times each digit appears in a birth date, one box per digit. This page is about the 3 box: how it fills, where it sits, how often it stays empty, and the readings the books in this app's library attach to it. The general essay, Missing numbers in your Lo Shu grid, covers all nine boxes together.

How the count of 3 is worked out

generateLoShuGrid() writes the date as day, month and year with no leading zeros, drops the zeros and counts each digit. The 3 box gets one mark for each 3.

  • Days that contribute a 3: the 3rd, 13th, 23rd, 30th and 31st. Five days in all.
  • Months: March only.
  • Years: only those with a 3 in their last two digits, such as 1953, 1973 or 1983. The century digits (19 or 20) never supply one.

A box with no marks goes on the missing list; two or more marks put it on the "dominant" list. The Lo Shu Grid calculator shows the counts, and the Numerology Profile adds the lists, the planes and the arrows.

Where the 3 sits and what it belongs to

In the displayed square (4 9 2 / 3 5 7 / 8 1 6) the 3 is the middle-left box.

The engine's arrows come from Metaphysical Secrets Ch. 5, laid out 3-6-9 / 2-5-8 / 1-4-7; only the presence of the digits is tested.

What an empty 3 box rules out

  • The Emotional plane (3, 5, 7) and the Thought plane (4, 3, 8) cannot be complete.
  • Three arrows cannot appear: the Planner, the Intellect and the Compassion arrows all need a 3.
  • The 3 goes on the missing list that the Health Tendencies card reads.

Since the 3 is the second most often missing digit after the 4, it is one of the commonest reasons these three arrows do not appear. A second or third 3 changes none of this; planes and arrows test presence only.

How often the 3 box is empty, single or crowded

The engine was run over every date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2010, 22,280 dates.

generateLoShuGrid() over every date, run 2026-10-13.

A missing 3 is the ordinary case: 15,690 of 22,280 dates, about seven in ten, and the share is much the same on both sides of 2000. Three 3s happen only when the day, the month and the year each give one, as on 3, 13, 23, 30 and 31 March 1953, and only 30 dates in the whole range manage it. No date has four.

The lines through the 3, counted

The same run counted the planes and arrows that pass through the 3. Of the 22,280 dates, the Thought plane (4, 3, 8) is complete on only 304, the fewest of the six planes, and absent on 6,452, the most. The Emotional plane (3, 5, 7) is complete on 504 and absent on 5,202. Of the three arrows through the 3, the Planner appears on 3,174 dates, the Intellect on 1,901 and the Compassion arrow on 504.

Two of those figures are the same because the lines are the same. The Compassion arrow and the Emotional plane are both 3, 5 and 7, so the engine reports them together or not at all: one is named in the plane list and the other in the arrow list, from two different sources. The Will plane and the Arrow of Determination (1, 5, 9) share cells in the same way.

Worked example: 13 January 1970 and 1 January 1970

The first dates the engine finds with and without a 3:

  1. 13 January 1970 is written 13, 1, 1970. Digits: 1, 3, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0. Dropping the 0 leaves three 1s, a 3, a 9 and a 7.
  2. Grid: 1 three times; 3, 7 and 9 once each. Missing: 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8. Dominant: 1. No plane is complete and none is absent: the single 3 is enough to keep the Thought plane from being absent. No arrow is complete; each line through the 3 is missing at least one other digit.
  3. Mulank: 1 + 3 = 4. Bhagyank: 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 22, kept as a master number.
  4. 1 January 1970: digits 1, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0, no 3. Grid: 1 three times, 7 and 9 once. Missing: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8, and here the Thought plane (4, 3, 8) is absent altogether.

The Vedic Grid never loses a 3 that the Lo Shu grid has, because the century digits it drops are 1, 9 or 2, never 3. It can gain one, because it adds the Bhagyank and Moolank at their single digits. Across all 22,280 dates the two grids disagree on the 3 count 3,777 times, and on 2,812 dates the Vedic grid has a 3 that the Lo Shu grid lacks.

What the books say about the 3 in the grid

  • Numerology Masters Notes (Rrachita Gupta) puts the 3 in the East with the Wood element. Its p.136 list gives family relationships, health and growth; its p.137 diagram gives social support, health, growth, prestige and social status, and the blessings of elders.
  • Its recurring table (p.165) reads one 3 as excellent or blessed, two as creative and three as over-imaginative, with a harsher four-times entry this page does not repeat. Metaphysical Secrets, Ch. 2, reads one as excellent, two as creative and three or four as over-imaginative. Since no date in the sweep has four 3s, the four-times readings never apply to anyone born from 1950 to 2010.
  • Metaphysical Secrets describes the Lo Shu as a square whose lines add to 15, then gives placements that belong to a different square: it puts the 3 in the top-left corner, where the engine's arrow layout (3-6-9 / 2-5-8 / 1-4-7) has it, not in the middle-left box of the Lo Shu. Comparing diagrams across books needs that caution.
  • For a missing 3 (p.169) Masters Notes lists missing the support and good wishes of elders and teachers, great effort for small results, finding learning a strain, social awkwardness, and not knowing or promoting one's own talent. Its p.166 introduction calls a missing number a lesson to be learned. The disease column is not reproduced, and the remedies heading is blank.

On the Health Tendencies calculator, this app rewrites that slide as a lesson: "Letting your work be seen. Effort here tends to feel heavier than the result seems to justify - the lesson is to keep learning anyway, and to stop hiding what you are good at." The framing comes from the book's introduction; the wording is the app's.

Seven dates in ten

A reading of a missing 3 applies to about seven of every ten dates from 1950 to 2010. It is a reading about most people, not a finding about one.

What the 3 box cannot tell you

The count belongs to the date, and everyone born that day shares it. The readings are the books' interpretations; they are not measurements, and nothing on this page is medical. The 3 as a Mulank or Bhagyank is a separate number, covered on Number 3 in numerology. The planes are defined under Lo Shu planes, and the neighbouring digits are on Lo Shu number 2 and Lo Shu number 4.

Why is my 3 box empty?
Most are. A 3 has to come from the 3rd, 13th, 23rd, 30th or 31st, from March, or from a year with a 3 in its last two digits. 15,690 of the 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010 have none.
My Mulank is 3. Why does my grid have no 3?
The 12th and the 21st give Mulank 3 (1 + 2, 2 + 1) without writing a 3. The grid counts written digits; the Mulank is a sum. The Life Path calculator shows your Mulank.
Can I have four 3s?
Not with a date from 1950 to 2010: the most any date in that range has is three.
What does one 3 mean?
Masters Notes reads it as excellent or blessed and Metaphysical Secrets as excellent. Those are the books' readings of a count, not measurements.
Does the app recommend anything for a missing 3?
No remedies. The book's slide leaves them blank; the app gives a lesson line and labels any care suggestions as its own.
