In short
The Arrow of Intellect is reported when a birth date contains at least one 3, one 6 and one 9, ignoring zeros. The engine returns it with the Arrow of Poor Memory, because the source book gives both names to the same digits. Of 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010, 1,901 complete it; only 20 of those are after 1999.
The Arrow of Intellect is the top row of the grid used for the Arrows of Pythagoras, the line through 3, 6 and 9. Its source calls the top row the mental plane, and gives the full line two opposite names: Intellect and Poor Memory. This app reports both. This page sets out the engine's test, a worked date, how often the line is complete across six decades of dates, and how the corpus books disagree about which digits stand for the mind. For the grid as a whole, see Lo Shu grid: missing numbers.
How the Arrow of Intellect is found: the rule
The arrows work from the count made by the Lo Shu grid calculator. Write the day, month and year without leading zeros, take every digit, remove the zeros, and count each of 1 to 9.
The counts go onto Erik Tao's layout from Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets (Ch. 5): 3, 6, 9 across the top, 2, 5, 8 across the middle, 1, 4, 7 across the bottom, which he labels mental, emotional and physical. The top row is this arrow. It shares its 3 with the Planner column and the Compassion diagonal, and its 9 with the Activity column and the Determination diagonal.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top (mental) | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Middle (emotional) | 2 | 5 | 8 |
| Bottom (physical) | 1 | 4 | 7 |
For each line the engine checks that every one of its digits has a count above zero. If so, the line is reported; if not, it is not mentioned. The Arrow of Intellect therefore appears exactly when the date contains at least one 3, one 6 and one 9. Extra copies change nothing.
The full row returns two readings. Tao's positive Arrow of Intellect describes intelligent people with a strong memory who can turn lazy when their mind is not fully engaged. His negative Arrow of Poor Memory, on the same three digits, describes people who are forgetful and absent-minded "but clever". There is no rule in the book for choosing, and the engine does not choose.
Not the Mental plane
The app's Lo Shu plane check has a "Mental" plane, but it is 4-9-2, the top row of the Lo Shu square. Only the 9 is shared with this arrow. A date can complete either without the other.
Where you see it: the Lo Shu grid calculator returns the counts; the Numerology Profile calculator returns the arrows in a full profile (it needs a name); the free numerology tool shows the positive name only, and the signed-in Numerology page shows both.
Worked example: 26 March 1970
This is the first date the content tooling found with Intellect when scanning from 1 January 1970. Every figure here comes from running the engine on 2026-10-14.
- Write the date unpadded: day 26, month 3, year 1970. The digits are 2, 6, 3, 1, 9, 7, 0.
- Drop the zero, leaving 2, 6, 3, 1, 9, 7, each once.
- Count: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 9 once each; 4, 5 and 8 missing.
- Check the top row: 3 present, 6 present, 9 present. The engine reports 3-6-9 with both names, Intellect and Poor Memory.
- Check the other lines. 1-2-3 is also complete, so the Planner is reported too (with no negative reading). Of the rest, 4-5-6 and 2-5-8 hold one digit each, and 7-8-9, 1-5-9, 1-4-7 and 3-5-7 hold two.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Middle | 2 | - | - |
| Bottom | 1 | - | 7 |
The Mulank is 8 (2 + 6 = 8) and the Bhagyank is 1 (2 + 6 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 28, then 10, then 1). Neither is part of the arrow test. On the separate Lo Shu plane check the date completes the Action plane, 2-7-6, which is a reminder that planes and arrows use different arrangements of the same counts.
How often birth dates complete it
The engine was run on every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2010, 22,280 dates.
| Digits of 3-6-9 present | Dates | What the engine reports |
|---|---|---|
| All three (the arrow) | 1,901 | Intellect and Poor Memory |
| Two of the three | 9,577 | nothing for this line |
| One of the three | 9,362 | nothing for this line |
| None | 1,440 | nothing for this line |
Roughly one date in twelve completes the row, nearly all before 2000: 1,881 of the 18,262 dates from 1950 to 1999, against 20 of the 4,018 from 2000 to 2010. The 9 in every 19xx year does half the work; in a 20xx year the 3, 6 and 9 all have to come from the day, month and last two digits. All 1,440 dates with none of the three digits are from 2000 onwards. The last full row in the span is 30 June 2009.
It is the only arrow on 724 dates. Its most frequent partner by far is 1-2-3, the Arrow of the Planner (805 dates), as in the worked example: the two lines meet at the 3. Next come 1-5-9, the Arrow of Determination (470), and 3-5-7, the Arrow of Compassion (64).
What the books say
Erik Tao, Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets
Tao provides both names and both descriptions. He also grades lines: full for the most dominant traits, two numbers for some of the qualities, one or none for an area needing work, empty for adaptability without a particular trait. The engine reports full lines only.
All three of his birth-date examples touch this row, and in each it is weak. In the February 1889, January 1998 and November 1987 dates the 3-6-9 row holds only 9s, and each time he lists memory among the areas needing work. The engine, run on those dates, reports nothing for 3-6-9. So in practice Tao uses the memory reading for a nearly empty top row, while his list assigns Poor Memory to a full one; the engine follows the list.
Life With Number Magick: intellect on 4-9-2
Rrachita Gupta's Life With Number Magick Part 2 (the numerology masters notes) reads arrows on the Lo Shu square, 4-9-2 over 3-5-7 over 8-1-6. On that square 3, 6 and 9 do not form a line (3 is middle left, 6 bottom right, 9 top centre). The book's Intellect arrow is the top row, 4-9-2, describing strong analytical power and concentration, with a risk of feeling superior to others; the lack of 4-9-2 is its Arrow of Poor Memory (pp. 149-152). This app's plane check calls that 4-9-2 row the Mental plane.
The two books agree that the top row of their own square stands for the mind and that poor memory belongs to the same line, but their top rows are different digits. They also differ on what "poor memory" requires: a full line for Tao, an empty one for Gupta.
Advanced Vedic Numerology: 3-1-9
Advanced Vedic Numerology has eight arrows on its own 3-1-9 / 6-7-5 / 2-8-4 grid, and the first of them, 3-1-9, it reads as the mark of an intelligent or intellectual person. That line shares the 3 and the 9 with Tao's arrow but swaps the 6 for a 1, and its grid is cast differently. The Vedic grid calculator runs those arrows. No other numerology book in the corpus discusses the Arrows of Pythagoras.
What the arrow cannot tell you
- Which reading applies. Intellect and Poor Memory are given to the same full row.
- Anything about intelligence. It records that three digits appear in a date; everyone born on 26 March 1970 has it.
- Anything from the counts. Three 9s or one 9 give the same answer.
- Whether another system agrees. Gupta and the Vedic book both put "intellect" on other digits.
Each digit has its own page: Lo Shu number 3, number 6 and number 9. Its commonest companion is the Arrow of the Planner; the row below it is the Arrow of Emotions, and the diagonal from its 3 is the Arrow of Compassion. The grid is defined under Lo Shu grid.
- Does the app say I have a good memory or a poor one?
- Neither. Erik Tao gives Intellect and Poor Memory to the same full 3-6-9 row with no rule for choosing, so the engine returns both.
- Is the Arrow of Intellect the same as the Mental plane?
- No. The Mental plane is 4-9-2 on the Lo Shu square; this arrow is 3-6-9 on Tao's layout. Only the 9 is shared.
- Why do people born after 2000 rarely have it?
- A 19xx year supplies the 9; a 20xx year supplies none of 3, 6 or 9. In the run, 20 of 4,018 dates from 2000 to 2010 completed the row.
- My date has a 9 but no 3 or 6. Do I have Poor Memory?
- The app reports nothing for a partial row. Tao himself reads a row like that as memory needing work, but that is his graded reading, not the engine's output.
- Does my name change the result?
- No. This app draws arrows from the birth date only, although Tao also describes a name grid.
