In short
The 9 box counts every 9 written in the birth date. Every year from 1900 to 1999 contains a 9, so no date in that century lacks one; from 2000 to 2010 the box is empty on 3,030 of 4,018 dates. The books read one 9 as intelligent and two as critical.
A Lo Shu grid counts the digits of a birth date into nine boxes. The 9 box behaves like the 1 box: for anyone born in the 1900s the year fills it before the day and month are even looked at. This page covers how the engine fills it, the lines that depend on it, how the count changes at the century, and what the books in this app's library say. The essay Missing numbers in your Lo Shu grid covers all nine digits together.
How the count of 9 is worked out
generateLoShuGrid() writes the date as day, month and year with no leading zeros, discards every 0 and counts the remaining digits. Each 9 adds a mark to the 9 box. A 9 can come from:
- Days: the 9th, the 19th and the 29th.
- Months: September only.
- Years: every year from 1900 to 1999, from the second digit of 19, and a second 9 for years such as 1959, 1979, 1989 and every year of the 1990s. The year 1999 gives three. From 2000 on, only years ending in 9, such as 2009.
An empty box goes on the missing list and a box with two or more marks on the "dominant" list. The Lo Shu Grid calculator shows the counts; the Numerology Profile adds the lists, the planes and the arrows.
Where the 9 sits and what it belongs to
In the displayed square (4 9 2 / 3 5 7 / 8 1 6) the 9 is the top-middle box, directly above the 5 and the 1. That column, 9-5-1, adds to 15 like every line of the square.
| What | Lines through the 9 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Planes (engine) | Mental (4, 9, 2) and Will (9, 5, 1) | PLANES; complete when all three are filled, absent when none is |
| Arrows (engine) | Activity (7-8-9), Determination (1-5-9) and Intellect (3-6-9) | ARROW_LINES; reported when all three digits are present |
| Direction and element | South, Fire | Numerology Masters Notes p.136-137; Metaphysical Secrets lists Fire as 9 alone |
What the century does to the lines through the 9
Because a 1900s year supplies both the 1 and the 9, a single 5 anywhere in such a date completes the Will plane and the Arrow of Determination. Over the 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010 both appear on 7,505, more than any other plane or arrow, and the Will plane is absent on only 581. The Mental plane (4, 9, 2) is never absent in that range: each date has a 9 from a 1900s year or a 2 from a 2000s year. It is complete on 2,472. The Activity arrow (7, 8, 9) appears on 2,428 dates and the Intellect arrow (3, 6, 9) on 1,901.
With no 9, which in this range means a date from 2000 on without a 9 in the day, month or year, the Will and Mental planes cannot be complete and none of those three arrows can appear.
How often the 9 box is empty, single or crowded
| Count of 9 | 1950-1999 (18,262 dates) | 2000-2010 (4,018 dates) | All 22,280 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (missing) | never | 3,030 | 3,030 |
| 1 | 10,908 | 896 | 11,804 |
| 2 | 6,073 | 89 | 6,162 |
| 3 | 1,180 | 3 | 1,183 |
| 4 or more | 101 | never | 101 |
The century splits the 9 completely. No date from 1950 to 1999 lacks a 9; from 2000 to 2010, 3,030 of 4,018 do, about three in four. A crowded 9 box is a 1900s feature: all 101 dates with four or more 9s are in that half, and the most, five, falls on 9, 19 and 29 September 1999. The 1 shows the same century effect, and the 2 the reverse; see Lo Shu number 1 and Lo Shu number 2.
Worked example: 1 January 1970, 3 January 2000 and 19 September 1999
- 1 January 1970 is the first date the engine finds with a 9. Written 1, 1, 1970, its digits are 1, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0. The 9 comes only from the century. Grid: 1 three times, 7 and 9 once. Missing: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. The Thought plane is absent; no arrow appears.
- 3 January 2000 is the first without one. Written 3, 1, 2000, its digits are 3, 1, 2, 0, 0, 0. Grid: 1, 2 and 3 once each. Missing: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. No plane is complete or absent, and the Arrow of the Planner (1, 2, 3) is reported. Mulank 3; Bhagyank 3 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 6.
- 19 September 1999 is one of the dates with five 9s. Written 19, 9, 1999, its digits are 1, 9, 9, 1, 9, 9, 9. Grid: 1 twice, 9 five times. Missing: 2 to 8, seven digits. The Emotional, Thought and Action planes are all absent and no arrow appears. Mulank: 1 + 9 = 10, then 1. Bhagyank: 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 47, then 4 + 7 = 11, kept as a master number.
The Vedic Grid treats the 9 very differently because it drops the century. For 1 January 1970 it has no 9 at all; for 19 September 1999 it has four rather than five, plus a 2 from the Bhagyank 11 read at its single digit. Across all 22,280 dates, a 9 present in the Lo Shu grid is absent from the Vedic grid on 8,992, and the two counts differ on 15,989. They are different grids from different books, not checks on each other.
Reading your own 9 box, step by step
- Write the date as day, month and year with no leading zeros, and drop every 0.
- Count the 9s. If you were born in the 1900s there is at least one. Two or more put the 9 on your dominant list.
- Check the lines: the Mental plane also needs 4 and 2; the Will plane 5 and 1; the Activity arrow 7 and 8; the Determination arrow 1 and 5; the Intellect arrow 3 and 6.
- Read the books last, remembering that for a 1900s birth the 9 box says more about the century than about the person.
What the books say about the 9 in the grid
- Numerology Masters Notes (Rrachita Gupta) puts the 9 in the South with the Fire element. Its p.136 list gives recognition, fame and energy; its p.137 diagram adds career prospects, planning, impulsiveness and anger. The same p.136 list puts "Career Prospects, Planning" under the 1, so the two slides disagree about where those words belong.
- Its recurring table (p.165) reads one 9 as intelligent, two as critical, three as givers and four as brilliant but loners. Metaphysical Secrets, Ch. 2, gives intelligent, critical, givers and loners but brilliant. Neither gives a reading for five 9s, which the sweep shows does occur.
- Metaphysical Secrets places the 9 in the top-right corner, its position in the 3-6-9 / 2-5-8 / 1-4-7 layout rather than in the Lo Shu square the app shows.
- For a missing 9 (p.175) Masters Notes speaks of a lack of courage to face challenges, less sensitivity to others, and little interest in community, and closes with a need to think more broadly. Several lines of the slide are harsher than this summary; its p.166 introduction frames missing numbers as lessons. The disease column is not reproduced here, and the remedies heading is blank.
On the Health Tendencies calculator this app words a missing 9 as: "Courage, and widening the circle. The lesson is to face what you would rather avoid, and to count other people's needs alongside your own." The framing is the book's; the words are the app's.
What the 9 box cannot tell you
The count is a fact about a date, shared by everyone born on it and, for the 9, largely fixed by the century. The readings are the books' interpretations, not measurements, and nothing here is medical. The 9 as a Mulank or Bhagyank is a different number, on Number 9 in numerology. The previous digit is on Lo Shu number 8, and the planes are defined under Lo Shu planes.
- Why does everyone born in the 1900s have a 9?
- Because the year begins 19. The engine counts every written digit except 0, so the 9 box always has at least one mark for a 1900s date.
- Can a 9 be missing?
- Only from 2000 on, for a date with no 9 in the day, month or year. Of the 4,018 dates from 2000 to 2010, 3,030 have none.
- My Mulank is 9 but my grid has no 9.
- The 18th and the 27th give Mulank 9 (1 + 8, 2 + 7) without writing a 9; in a 2000s year that leaves the box empty. The grid counts written digits; the Mulank is a sum. The Life Path calculator shows your Mulank.
- What do two 9s mean?
- Both books read two 9s as critical. That is their reading of a count, not a measurement, and from 1950 to 1999 a third of all dates have two.
- Does the app suggest anything for a missing 9?
- No remedies. The book leaves them blank on that slide; the app's card gives a lesson line and ordinary suggestions labelled as its own.
