In short
The 8 box counts every 8 written in the birth date: from the 8th, 18th or 28th, from August, or from a year with an 8 in its last two digits. It is empty on 13,856 of the 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010. The books read one 8 as scrupulous and two as adamant.
A Lo Shu grid counts the digits of a birth date into nine boxes, one per digit. This page is about the 8 box: how the engine fills it, which planes and arrows depend on it, how often it is empty or crowded across sixty-one years of dates, and the readings the books in this app's library give it. The essay Missing numbers in your Lo Shu grid covers all nine digits together.
How the count of 8 is worked out
generateLoShuGrid() writes the date as day, month and year with no leading zeros, discards every 0 and counts the digits that remain. Each 8 adds one mark to the 8 box. An 8 can come from:
- Days: the 8th, the 18th and the 28th.
- Months: August only.
- Years: those with an 8 in their last two digits, such as 1958, 1968, 1978, 1998 and 2008, and every year of the 1980s. The year 1988 gives two.
An empty box goes on the missing list and a box with two or more marks on the "dominant" list. The Lo Shu Grid calculator shows the counts; the Numerology Profile adds the lists, the planes and the arrows.
Where the 8 sits and what it belongs to
In the displayed square (4 9 2 / 3 5 7 / 8 1 6) the 8 is the bottom-left box. Its row, column and diagonal each add to 15 like every other line of the square.
| What | Lines through the 8 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Planes (engine) | Practical (8, 1, 6) and Thought (4, 3, 8) | PLANES; complete when all three are filled, absent when none is |
| Arrows (engine) | Activity (7-8-9) and Emotions (2-5-8) | ARROW_LINES; reported when all three digits are present |
| A diagonal the engine does not use | The 2-5-8 "Property" or "Silver" plane | Numerology Masters Notes p.141-142 |
| Direction and element | North-East, Earth | Numerology Masters Notes p.136-137; Metaphysical Secrets lists Earth as 8, 5 and 2 |
What an empty 8 box rules out
- The Practical plane and the Thought plane cannot be complete.
- The Arrow of Activity and the Arrow of the Emotions cannot appear.
- The 8 goes on the missing list read by the Health Tendencies card.
Over the same 22,280 dates the Practical plane is complete on 2,488 and absent on only 576, because its middle digit, the 1, is so common. The Thought plane is complete on 304, the fewest of the six planes, and absent on 6,452, the most. The Activity arrow appears on 2,428 dates; for a 1900s birth the year already gives the 9, so a 7 and an 8 elsewhere complete it. The Emotions arrow appears on 1,322.
How often the 8 box is empty, single or crowded
| Count of 8 | 1950-1999 (18,262 dates) | 2000-2010 (4,018 dates) | All 22,280 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (missing) | 10,844 | 3,012 | 13,856 |
| 1 | 6,112 | 912 | 7,024 |
| 2 | 1,203 | 91 | 1,294 |
| 3 | 100 | 3 | 103 |
| 4 or more | 3 | never | 3 |
A missing 8 is the majority case, a little over six dates in ten, and three in four after 2000. The pattern is nearly the same as for the 5, the 6 and the 7, each of which comes from three days, one month and one full decade of years in this range. Four 8s occur on just three dates, 8, 18 and 28 August 1988. Compare Lo Shu number 7 and Lo Shu number 6.
Worked example: 28 January 1970, 1 January 1970 and 18 August 1988
- 28 January 1970 is the first date the engine finds with an 8. Written 28, 1, 1970, its digits are 2, 8, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0. Grid: 1 twice; 2, 7, 8 and 9 once each. Missing: 3, 4, 5 and 6. Dominant: 1. No plane is complete or absent. The 7, 8 and 9 are all present, so the Arrow of Activity is reported. Mulank: 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Bhagyank: 2 + 8 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1.
- 1 January 1970 is the first without one. Digits 1, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0. Grid: 1 three times, 7 and 9 once. Missing: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. The Thought plane is absent, and the Activity arrow is one digit short.
- 18 August 1988 is one of the three dates with four 8s. Written 18, 8, 1988, its digits are 1, 8, 8, 1, 9, 8, 8. Grid: 1 twice, 8 four times, 9 once. Missing: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7; dominant: 1 and 8. The Emotional and Action planes are both absent and no arrow appears. Mulank: 1 + 8 = 9. Bhagyank: 1 + 8 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 43, then 4 + 3 = 7.
The first and third dates make the point together. One 8 on 28 January 1970 completes an arrow, because the 7 and the 9 were already there; four 8s on 18 August 1988 complete nothing, because the 7 is missing. Planes and arrows test presence, not number. The Vedic Grid for 18 August 1988 keeps four 8s, drops one 1 and the 9 of the century, and adds the Bhagyank 7 and the Moolank 9. Across all 22,280 dates it never loses an 8 the Lo Shu grid has; it gains one on 2,439, and the counts differ on 3,773.
Reading your own 8 box, step by step
- Write the date as day, month and year with no leading zeros, and drop every 0.
- Count the 8s. None puts the 8 on your missing list; two or more put it on your dominant list.
- Check the lines through the 8: the Practical plane also needs 1 and 6; the Thought plane needs 4 and 3; the Activity arrow needs 7 and 9; the Emotions arrow needs 2 and 5.
- Remember what the century supplies: a 1900s year gives the 1 and the 9, a 2000s year the 2.
- Only then read the books, noting which book says what and that a missing 8 is shared by most dates in the range.
What the books say about the 8 in the grid
- Numerology Masters Notes (Rrachita Gupta) puts the 8 in the North-East with the Earth element and lists knowledge, education and memory (p.136); its p.137 diagram adds struggle and self-effort. It also names the 2-5-8 diagonal the "Property" or "Silver" plane, which the engine does not report.
- Its recurring table (p.165) reads one 8 as scrupulous, two as adamant, three as materialistic and four as ceaselessly in motion. Metaphysical Secrets, Ch. 2, gives scrupulous, adamant, materialistic and constantly in motion: the two books agree on all four.
- Metaphysical Secrets places the 8 in the middle-right box, its position in the 3-6-9 / 2-5-8 / 1-4-7 layout rather than in the Lo Shu square the app shows.
- For a missing 8 (p.174) Masters Notes speaks of a weak sense of money and resource management, finances that go up and down, and tasks left midway, and closes with a need to take responsibility for oneself and one's resources. Its p.166 introduction frames missing numbers as lessons. The disease column is not reproduced here, and the remedies heading is blank.
On the Health Tendencies calculator this app words a missing 8 as: "Finishing, and handling money. This gap asks for decisions carried through to the end, and a real grip on what comes in and what goes out." The framing is the book's; the words are the app's.
Six dates in ten
A missing 8 was found on 13,856 of 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010. A reading of it describes most people born in that range, not one person in particular.
What the 8 box cannot tell you
The count is a fact about a calendar date, shared by everyone born on it. The readings are interpretations from books that do not always agree; none is a measurement, and nothing here is medical or financial advice. The 8 as a Mulank or Bhagyank is a different number, covered on Number 8 in numerology. The next digit is on Lo Shu number 9, and the planes are defined under Lo Shu planes.
- Why is my 8 box empty?
- An 8 has to come from the 8th, 18th or 28th, from August, or from a year with an 8 in its last two digits. 13,856 of the 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010 have none.
- My Mulank is 8 but my grid has no 8.
- The 17th and the 26th give Mulank 8 (1 + 7, 2 + 6) without writing an 8. The grid counts written digits; the Mulank is a sum. The Life Path calculator shows your Mulank.
- I have four 8s. Is that unusual?
- In the sweep from 1950 to 2010 only three dates had four 8s: 8, 18 and 28 August 1988. Both books read four 8s as constant motion; that is their reading of a count, shared by everyone born on those days.
- Does the app show the Silver plane?
- No. The engine's planes are the three rows and three columns. The same three digits are tested as the Arrow of the Emotions, which appeared on 1,322 of the 22,280 dates.
- Does the app suggest anything for a missing 8?
- No remedies. The book's slide leaves them blank; the app's card gives a lesson line and ordinary suggestions labelled as its own.
