In short
The Arrow of Activity is reported when a birth date contains at least one 7, one 8 and one 9, ignoring zeros. The engine returns it together with the Arrow of Inactivity, because the source book names both on the same digits. Of 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010, 2,428 complete it, and only 18 of those fall after 1999.
The Arrow of Activity is one of the eight Arrows of Pythagoras, the straight lines read through a 3 by 3 grid of the digits in a birth date. It runs through 7, 8 and 9. Its source book gives the same three digits a second, opposite name, the Arrow of Inactivity, and this app reports both. Below are the exact test the engine applies, a worked date, real frequencies from a run of the engine, and what the numerology books in the corpus say. For the grid as a whole, start with Lo Shu grid: missing numbers.
How the Arrow of Activity is found: the rule
The input is the digit count that the Lo Shu grid calculator produces. Write the day, month and year without leading zeros, list every digit, discard the zeros, and count how often each of 1 to 9 occurs. Nothing else from the date is used.
The arrows are drawn on Erik Tao's arrangement from Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets (Ch. 5), not on the Lo Shu square. Tao puts 3, 6, 9 on the top row, 2, 5, 8 in the middle and 1, 4, 7 on the bottom, calling the rows mental, emotional and physical. Read downwards, the right-hand column is 9, 8, 7. That column is the Arrow of Activity.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top (mental) | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Middle (emotional) | 2 | 5 | 8 |
| Bottom (physical) | 1 | 4 | 7 |
For each line the engine asks one question: is the count of every digit on it above zero? If yes, the line is reported. If any digit is missing, the line is left out entirely. So Activity appears exactly when the date holds at least one 7, at least one 8 and at least one 9. Two 9s or three 7s make no difference.
When the line is complete, the engine returns two readings at once. Tao lists 7-8-9 among his positive arrows as Activity, describing people who are energetic, fidgety and feel a need to stay busy, and again among his negative arrows as Inactivity (he writes the digits as 9, 8 and 7), describing people slow to act who need encouragement. The book gives no rule for deciding which reading applies to a full line, so the engine does not decide either.
One line, two names
There is no separate "Inactivity" test. Both names belong to the same full 7-8-9 line and always appear together. A date with an empty or partial 7-8-9 line gets neither.
Where you see it: the Lo Shu grid calculator returns the counts, so the line can be checked by eye. The Numerology Profile calculator lists the arrows as part of a full profile (it needs a name too). The free numerology tool shows only the positive name; the signed-in Numerology page shows both.
Worked example: 28 January 1970
This is the first date the content tooling found with Activity when scanning from 1 January 1970. Every figure here comes from running the engine on 2026-10-14.
- Write the date unpadded: day 28, month 1, year 1970. The digits are 2, 8, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0.
- Drop the zero. Six digits remain: 2, 8, 1, 1, 9, 7.
- Count: 1 twice; 2, 7, 8 and 9 once each; 3, 4, 5 and 6 missing.
- Check the right-hand column: 9 present, 8 present, 7 present. Every count is above zero, so the engine reports 7-8-9 with both names, Activity and Inactivity.
- Check the other seven lines. None is complete: 4-5-6 is empty; 3-6-9 and 3-5-7 hold one digit each (the 9 and the 7); 1-2-3, 1-5-9, 1-4-7 and 2-5-8 hold two each.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | - | - | 9 |
| Middle | 2 | - | 8 |
| Bottom | 1 1 | - | 7 |
The same date has a Mulank of 1 (28 gives 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1) and a Bhagyank of 1 (2 + 8 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 28, then 10, then 1). Neither enters the arrow test. The Lo Shu plane check, which uses a different arrangement, finds no complete and no empty plane here, and the engine marks 1 as the only repeated digit.
How often birth dates complete it
The engine was run over every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2010, 22,280 dates in all.
| Digits of 7-8-9 present | Dates | What the engine reports |
|---|---|---|
| All three (the arrow) | 2,428 | Activity and Inactivity |
| Two of the three | 10,503 | nothing for this line |
| One of the three | 7,805 | nothing for this line |
| None | 1,544 | nothing for this line |
Roughly one date in nine completes the line, but almost all of them are in the twentieth century: 2,410 of the 18,262 dates from 1950 to 1999, against 18 of the 4,018 dates from 2000 to 2010. The reason is the year. Every 19xx year supplies a 9 for free, so the day, month and last two digits only need to find a 7 and an 8. A 20xx year supplies a 2 and a 0, so all three digits have to come from elsewhere. The same effect shows in the empty line: all 1,544 dates with no 7, 8 or 9 are from 2000 onwards. The last full line in the span is 27 August 2009.
On 1,324 dates Activity is the only arrow. When it has company, the commonest partners are 1-5-9, the Arrow of Determination (564 dates), 1-4-7, the Arrow of Practicality (404), and 2-5-8, the Arrow of Emotions (234).
What the books say
Erik Tao, Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets
Tao is the source of the line, both its names and both texts. His reading instructions go further than the engine: a full line marks the most dominant traits, a two-number line shows some of the qualities, a line with one number or none is an area that needs work, and an empty line is said to mean adaptability, with no particular positive or negative trait.
Two of his worked dates touch this line, and they read it differently. For a November 1987 date the grid has 7, 8 and 9, and he names Activity and Practicality as the two full arrows. The engine agrees exactly: run on 24 November 1987 it returns 7-8-9 and 1-4-7 and nothing else. For a January 1998 date, whose 7-8-9 line holds only the 8 and the 9, he still calls activity one of the "most prominent traits", leaning on the two-number reading. The engine, run on 1 January 1998, returns no arrow at all, because it reports full lines only.
Notice also that Tao never uses the Inactivity name in his examples. His list attaches it to a full line, the same digits as Activity, yet when his worked readings do use negative names (impracticality, skepticism, frustration) they apply them to weak or partial lines, as areas needing work. The engine follows the list, not the examples.
Life With Number Magick: no 7-8-9 line
Rrachita Gupta's Life With Number Magick Part 2 (the numerology masters notes) reads arrows on the Lo Shu square itself, 4-9-2 over 3-5-7 over 8-1-6. On that square 7, 8 and 9 are not in a line at all: 9 is top centre, 7 middle right and 8 bottom left. The book's physical-energy arrow is a different set of digits, 2-7-6, which it calls Action and describes as a love of sport and physical exertion (pp. 151-153); the lack of 2-7-6 is its Arrow of Apathy. The same 2-7-6 column is what this app's plane check calls the Action plane.
So the two books share an idea, a line for physical energy and its absence, but put it on different digits and different squares. A reading that mentions an "action" or "activity" arrow is only comparable with this one if it uses 7, 8 and 9.
Where the corpus is silent
Advanced Vedic Numerology has eight arrows on its own 3-1-9 / 6-7-5 / 2-8-4 grid; the nearest, 1-7-8, shares two digits with this line but is a different arrow. The Vedic grid calculator runs those. No other numerology book in the corpus discusses the Arrows of Pythagoras.
What the arrow cannot tell you
- Which of its two readings applies. The book gives Activity and Inactivity to the same full line and no way to choose.
- Anything beyond the digits. Everyone born on 28 January 1970 has it, as does everyone whose date contains a 7, an 8 and a 9.
- Anything from the counts. One 9 and two 9s give the same result.
- Whether another system agrees. On the Lo Shu square these digits form no line, so a Lo Shu reading will not show this arrow.
- Anything tested. The texts are one author's descriptions, reported as his; the app makes no prediction from them.
Each digit has its own page: Lo Shu number 7, number 8 and number 9. The arrows it most often shares a date with are the Arrow of Determination and the Arrow of Practicality; the column on the opposite side of the layout is the Arrow of the Planner. The grid itself is defined under Lo Shu grid.
- Do I have Activity or Inactivity?
- The app cannot say, and neither does its source. Erik Tao names both on the same full 7-8-9 line without a rule for choosing, so the engine returns both.
- Why is this arrow so rare for people born after 2000?
- Because a 19xx year gives a 9 for free and a 20xx year does not. In the run over 1950 to 2010, 2,410 dates before 2000 completed the line against 18 from 2000 to 2010.
- My grid has 8 and 9 but no 7. Do I have half the arrow?
- Not in this app. The engine reports full lines only. Tao would call a two-number line a partial expression of the traits, but that reading is not part of the output.
- Is this the same as the Action arrow on other sites?
- Usually not. Life With Number Magick calls 2-7-6 on the Lo Shu square the Action arrow. This page is about 7-8-9 on Tao's layout. Check the digits before comparing meanings.
- Does my name change the arrow?
- No. Tao also builds a grid from the letters of a name, but this app draws arrows from the birth date only.
