The Arrow of Practicality is the bottom row, 1-4-7, of Erik Tao's Arrows of Pythagoras grid, and his book names the same digits the Arrow of Impracticality too. Here is when this app reports it, a worked date with the arithmetic, how often 1950-2010 dates complete it, and how Tao himself reads the line when it is not full.

In short

The Arrow of Practicality is reported when a birth date contains at least one 1, one 4 and one 7, ignoring zeros. The engine returns it with the Arrow of Impracticality, because the source book gives both names to the same digits. Of 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010, 1,721 complete it.

The Arrow of Practicality is the bottom row of the grid used for the Arrows of Pythagoras, the line through 1, 4 and 7. Its source calls that row the physical plane, and names the full line both Practicality and Impracticality. This app reports both. Here you will find the engine's exact test, a worked date, frequencies from a run of the engine and what the corpus books say, including how the source author reads the line when it is only partly filled. For the grid in general, see Lo Shu grid: missing numbers.

How the Arrow of Practicality is found: the rule

The arrows read the same digit count as the Lo Shu grid calculator. Write the day, month and year without leading zeros, collect every digit, throw away the zeros, and count how many times each of 1 to 9 appears.

The digits are then placed on Erik Tao's arrangement from Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets (Ch. 5), not on the Lo Shu square. Tao's rows are 3, 6, 9 (mental) at the top, 2, 5, 8 (emotional) in the middle and 1, 4, 7 (physical) at the bottom. The bottom row is this arrow.

Top (mental)369
Middle (emotional)258
Bottom (physical)147

The engine checks every line in one way: each of its three digits must have a count of at least one. A line that passes is reported; a line that fails is not mentioned at all. So the Arrow of Practicality appears exactly when the date has a 1, a 4 and a 7 somewhere in it. How many of each it has makes no difference.

A full line carries two readings. Tao lists 1-4-7 as the positive Arrow of Practicality, for grounded, hardworking people who often work with their hands, and as the negative Arrow of Impracticality, for idealistic people who struggle with daily life and tend to be disorganised. His book gives no way to choose between them for a full line, and the engine returns both.

Not the same as the Practical plane

The app's separate Lo Shu plane check has a "Practical" plane, but it is 8-1-6, the bottom row of the Lo Shu square. Only the digit 1 is shared. A date can have one without the other.

Where you see it: the Lo Shu grid calculator returns the counts; the Numerology Profile calculator lists the arrows inside a full profile (with a name); the free numerology tool shows the positive name only, and the signed-in Numerology page shows both.

Worked example: 4 January 1970

This is the first date the content tooling found with Practicality when scanning from 1 January 1970. Every figure was produced by the engine on 2026-10-14.

  1. Write the date unpadded: day 4, month 1, year 1970. The digits are 4, 1, 1, 9, 7, 0.
  2. Drop the zero, leaving 4, 1, 1, 9, 7.
  3. Count: 1 twice; 4, 7 and 9 once each; 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8 missing.
  4. Check the bottom row: 1 present, 4 present, 7 present. All three counts are above zero, so the engine reports 1-4-7 with both names, Practicality and Impracticality.
  5. Check the other seven lines. 2-5-8 is completely empty; 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 3-6-9 and 3-5-7 hold one digit each; 7-8-9 and 1-5-9 hold two each. None is complete.

For the same date the Mulank is 4 (the day) and the Bhagyank is 22, since 4 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 22 and the engine keeps 22 as a master number. Neither enters the arrow test. The Lo Shu plane check finds no complete and no empty plane, and the engine marks 1 as the only repeated digit. The empty middle row is notable: in Tao's scheme the whole emotional row is blank, but the engine has no output for an empty row.

How often birth dates complete it

The engine was run on every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2010, 22,280 dates.

About one date in thirteen completes the row. A 19xx year supplies the 1, so the rest of the date has to find a 4 and a 7: 1,632 of the 18,262 dates from 1950 to 1999 do. A 20xx year supplies neither, and only 89 of the 4,018 dates from 2000 to 2010 complete it. All 576 dates with no 1, 4 or 7 at all are from 2000 onwards; before then the 1 of the year rules that out.

Practicality is the only arrow on 854 dates. Its commonest partners are 1-5-9, the Arrow of Determination, and 7-8-9, the Arrow of Activity, with 404 dates each, followed by 1-2-3, the Arrow of the Planner (108).

What the books say

Erik Tao, Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets

Tao supplies both names and texts, and he grades lines by fullness: three numbers for the most dominant traits, two for some of the qualities, one or none for an area to work on, an empty line for adaptability with no particular trait. Practicality is the line he uses most in his worked examples, in all three of the graded ways.

For a November 1987 date he reads Activity and Practicality as the two full arrows; the engine, run on 24 November 1987, returns exactly 7-8-9 and 1-4-7. For a January 1998 date, where the row holds only 1s, he lists "impracticality" among the areas needing work. For a February 1889 date, whose row again holds only the 1s, he says the bottom row needs work on practicality. On both of those dates the engine returns nothing for 1-4-7.

The 1998 reading is worth noticing. Tao's list attaches Impracticality to a full 1-4-7, the same line as Practicality, but in practice he uses the word for a nearly empty one. The engine follows the list, so a full line returns both names and a weak line returns neither. A reader who wants Tao's graded reading has to count the row by hand.

Life With Number Magick: no 1-4-7 line

Rrachita Gupta's Life With Number Magick Part 2 (the numerology masters notes) reads arrows on the Lo Shu square, 4-9-2 over 3-5-7 over 8-1-6. There 4 is top left, 1 bottom centre and 7 middle right, so 1-4-7 is not a line and the book has no arrow for it. Its closest material-world line is 8-1-6, which it calls Prosperity, with success in business and an interest in money for its own sake; the lack of 8-1-6 is its Arrow of Losses (pp. 151-153). This app's plane check calls the same 8-1-6 row the Practical plane.

So "practical" in Gupta's system, and in this app's planes, refers to 8-1-6; in Tao's arrows it refers to 1-4-7. The words overlap and the digits mostly do not.

Where the corpus is silent

Advanced Vedic Numerology lists eight arrows on its 3-1-9 / 6-7-5 / 2-8-4 grid; none is 1-4-7. The Vedic grid calculator runs those. No other numerology book in the corpus discusses the Arrows of Pythagoras.

What the arrow cannot tell you

  • Which of its two names applies. The source attaches both to the same full row.
  • Anything about a weak row. The engine reports full rows only; Tao's graded readings are not part of the output.
  • Anything from the counts. One 1 or three 1s give the same answer.
  • Anything tested. The descriptions are one author's; the app does not predict from them.

Each digit in the row has its own page: Lo Shu number 1, number 4 and number 7. It most often appears beside the Arrow of Activity and the Arrow of Determination. The row above it is the Arrow of Emotions. The grid is defined under Lo Shu grid.

Do I have Practicality or Impracticality?
The app cannot tell you, because its source gives both names to the same full 1-4-7 row and no rule to pick one. The engine returns both.
Is this the same as the Practical plane in my report?
No. The Practical plane is 8-1-6 on the Lo Shu square. The Arrow of Practicality is 1-4-7 on Erik Tao's layout. They share only the 1.
My date has 1s but no 4 or 7. Does the app say I am impractical?
No. The engine reports nothing for a partial row. Tao himself reads a row like that as an area needing work, but that reading is not part of the app's output.
Why are so few post-2000 dates on this arrow?
A 19xx year provides the 1; a 20xx year provides a 2 and a 0. In the run, 89 of 4,018 dates from 2000 to 2010 completed the row, against 1,632 of 18,262 from 1950 to 1999.
Does the app use my name for arrows?
No. Tao also builds name grids, but this app draws arrows from the birth date only.
