What the numerology books this app is built on say about number 8, how it reads as a birth number, a destiny number and a year number, why one book calls it a good marriage match for the same numbers it calls enemies, and how to check each reading against your own date of birth.

Number 8 is the number of Saturn in the Indian numerology books this app draws on, and the words attached to it are Saturn's: discipline, effort, delay, authority, money and judgement. It is also the number the books handle most harshly. But 'being an 8' is not one fact. Your Mulank is 8 if you were born on the 8th, 17th or 26th. Your Bhagyank is 8 if your whole birth date sums to it. You are in a Personal Year 8 for twelve months at a time, whatever your birth numbers. And the digit 8 may or may not be written in your date. These are four separate calculations with four separate readings. To see which apply to you, run the Life Path calculator for the two birth numbers and the Personal Year calculator for the year.

What this page is and is not

It reports what named numerology books say, as this app's code records and applies them. Numerology has no single canon, and on number 8 the books are at their most contradictory: one of them calls the 8 a good marriage match for the very numbers its own table calls enemies. Where they split, both readings are given. Nothing here predicts what will happen to you. Several sources make dark claims about an 8; the substance is reported as each book's line and not endorsed, and the darkest are left out. Anything said about the body is not medical advice, and no remedy is repeated.

Why 8 belongs to Saturn

Advanced Vedic Numerology's table of numbers and planets gives 8 to Saturn, and so does Vedic Numerology Basic; the engine's trait table names Saturn as ruler of 8 and calls the number The Strategist, with the line 'You think in outcomes and timelines more than most people do.' Vedic Numerology Basic's friendship table heads the row Saturn (Shani). In the book's period system Saturn is the eighth of nine lords and runs for eight years. The Saturn in Vedic astrology page covers the planet itself.

The link to astrology ends at the symbol. Someone born on the 8th, 17th or 26th need not have a strong Saturn, and a strong Saturn says nothing about the birth date. Your Saturn Mahadasha comes from the Moon at birth, not from a digit sum, and the two systems can point different ways for the same year, which is the subject of when astrology and numerology disagree.

Four ways an 8 can appear in your numbers

The Mulank is the day of the month reduced to one digit, so the 17th and the 26th both become 8. The Bhagyank, or Life Path, sums every digit of the full date. Both are fixed for life. The Personal Year adds the birth day and month to the current year and changes every year. The grid digit is how often an 8 is written in the date. The first two are explained from first principles in Mulank, Bhagyank and Life Path. The 8 has no master number behind it, since the rules document keeps only 11, 22 and 33, and no karmic debt number reduces to it: the four the AIFAS notes name, 13, 14, 16 and 19, reduce to 4, 5, 7 and 1. A Bhagyank 8 is always a plain 8.

Mulank 8: born on the 8th, 17th or 26th

What the books say about the nature of an 8

Vedic Numerology Basic's Saturn slide is more balanced than its reputation. Its positive column reads disciplined, organised, an empath, patient, hard working, a lover of justice, consistent, spiritual, a good listener, practical, setting long-term goals, satisfied and loyal. The negative column reads too serious, cold hearted, tired, over-burdened, given to negative thoughts and frustration, disrespectful, quick to judge, impatient, with poor work ethics and procrastination. Hard working and poor work ethics sit on opposite sides of the same slide: the book's Saturn is a steady worker when the number is strong and a procrastinator when it is weak.

The same book's marriage portraits call the Life Path 8 The Powerhouse: ambitious, determined, authoritative and goal-driven. In a marriage it focuses on success and achievement, can be controlling or distant when career comes first, and needs a partner who understands its drive. The AIFAS notes read an 8 in the name numbers in the same key. The Soul Urge 8 thrives on attaining power and wealth and on challenge. The Personality 8 is extremely hard-working and persistent, ready to face struggle and rejection on the way to a set goal, competitive and money-minded, seen as lucky and resourceful, and credited with organisational and money-management skill.

The three birthdays are not read identically

Oliver Tan's Power of Numbers writes an entry for every day of the month, and Numerology Made Easy reads each compound number on its own. Tan's entry for the 8th is the darkest in his book, and only its substance is given here.

Born on theOliver Tan's day-of-month entryThe compound number in Numerology Made Easy
8thTwo opposite personalities, often misunderstood and talked about unfairly; materialistic and spiritual at once; success or failure with nothing in between. Cold on the surface and warm underneath, capable of great sacrifice, giving more than they take. Tan calls it an unfortunate number to be born under and says the only person compatible with an 8 is another 8.No compound: the plain 8 of business, finance, power, judgement and executive ability.
17thAmbitious, with definite ideas and a love of travel; administrative work does not suit. Changeable, likely to be misunderstood, and better off in a business of their own than in a career.17 is the best compound of the 8: the originality of the 1 with the 7's demand for proof, under the 8's judgement. The book ties it to banking, insurance, real estate, company leadership and the bench, and calls it a number of fortune and happiness.
26thGentle, a good host who likes a full house; emotional but intelligent, ready to fight for what is right and to sacrifice for people they love. Often misunderstood and criticised; impatient, leaving things unfinished.26 is partnership (2) in an environment of family (6) under the root 8. The book reads in it the possibility of an early and long marriage and success in politics, law and executive work, with a felt conflict between the 2's sensitivity and the 8's authority.

Tan's 8th and Numerology Made Easy's 17th are the two poles of this page: one book's 8 is misunderstood and unlucky, the other's 17 is the number of judges and bank chairmen. Both are describing a digit sum.

Bhagyank 8

The Bhagyank adds every digit of the date. A birth on 17 August 1990 gives 1 + 7 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 35, then 8: Mulank 8 and Bhagyank 8. So does 8 March 1986. A birth on 17 April 1991 gives 32, then 5: Mulank 8, Bhagyank 5. A birth on 26 March 2000 gives 13, then 4: Mulank 8, Bhagyank 4, and because the Life Path passes through 13, a karmic debt flag on the Life Path rather than on the birthday. A birth on 8 June 1990 sums to 33, which this app keeps as the master number 33 and does not reduce. An 8 in one position tells you nothing about the other.

What a Life Path 8 is read as

The raw totals behind a Bhagyank 8 are usually 17, 26, 35 or 44, and Numerology Made Easy reads each. 17 and 26 are covered above. 35 is the 3 of writing and speaking in an environment of the 5's movement, under the 8: a strong emphasis on things literary and on money, with public speaking and publishing named, and a warning that the 3 and 5 together can scatter effort. 44 doubles the 4's practicality, discipline and loyalty under the 8, and the book ties it to a standard military career, real estate and any practical undertaking. 53 reverses 35 and suits public relations and advertising. All share the root: power, energy, judgement and executive ability.

The AIFAS notes add a long-range reading in their Pinnacle chapter. A Pinnacle 8 is enterprise, finance, strength and material acquisition, with sound judgement, vision and authority, and usually a wish to be in charge of a business or organisation focused on money. A Life Challenge 8, in Numerology Made Easy, is called the Balance of Power: good chances of recognition if your motives are straight, a fear of loss that produces the very lack it fears, and the task of bringing the material and spiritual sides of money and power into balance.

Your Mulank and Bhagyank together

Advanced Vedic Numerology rates every Mulank-Bhagyank pair in its 81 Combinations table, and the 81 Combinations calculator looks your pair up. For an 8 the table is symmetrical, and it is the harshest row in the book.

Three Very Bad ratings and one Bad: no other number collects as many. The punch lines follow the same pattern. For 1 with 8 the book lists ups and downs in career, a poor relation with the father, trouble in government work and family problems. For 2 with 8 it lists emotional strain, hurdles, much work for little result, a poor relation with the mother and a risk of negative thinking, with finances steadier after 40. For 4 with 8 it lists professional struggle and late success, good for government work once it lands. For 8 with 9 it says health and professional struggle. The one bright line is 5 with 8, rated Very Good, whose punch line is two words: property-linked. The double 8 is rated Bad and has no punch line. This app shows all of these as one book's reading.

The worked dates land across the row. 17 April 1991 (8 with 5) is Very Good. 8 June 1990, a Bhagyank 33, is read at its single digit for this table only and lands on 8 with 6, Good, and the calculator says it has done so. 17 August 1990 and 8 March 1986 (8 with 8) are Bad. 26 March 2000 (8 with 4) is Very Bad.

The digit 8 in your birth-date grid

The grid counts how many times each digit is written in your date of birth, a separate question from the Mulank. Someone born on 17 August 1990 has an 8 in the grid only because of August; someone born on 26 March 2000 has Mulank 8 and no 8 at all. Only the 8th, 18th or 28th, a birth in August, or a year written with an 8 puts the digit there. The Lo Shu Grid calculator shows your counts, and missing numbers in your Lo Shu grid explains what a count is and is not.

Where the 8 sits

In the Lo Shu square as this app displays it (4-9-2 over 3-5-7 over 8-1-6) the 8 is the bottom left corner. It lies on the bottom row 8-1-6, the Practical plane, for execution, order and follow-through, and on the left-hand column 4-3-8, the Thought plane, for ideas and mental discipline. The 8 March 1986 birth has 8, 1 and 6 all present, so its Practical plane is complete, and it has the 8 twice, which this app marks as dominant.

Erik Tao's Arrows of Pythagoras put 8 in the middle of the right-hand column of his own layout. Two of his lines run through it: 7-8-9, read as Activity (energetic, always busy) or Inactivity (slow to act, needing encouragement), and 2-5-8, read as Emotions (serious, intense, sometimes dramatic, often good performers) or Sensitivity (easily hurt, retreating from conflict). Tao gives no rule for choosing, so the app shows both names. Advanced Vedic Numerology's layout, which the engine records as 3-1-9 over 6-7-5 over 2-8-4, puts the 8 in the middle of the bottom row.

A missing or repeated 8

The books' own text on a missing or repeated 8 was not available for this page, so no reading of either is given. What the app does can be stated. It marks a digit dominant at two or more. The Health Tendencies calculator, built on the AIFAS slides in Life With Number Magick Part 2, links a missing 8 to breathing and the lungs, the liver, digestion, joints, the head and hearing as body areas to notice; it names no condition and is not medical advice.

Lines and shapes that pass through the 8

Advanced Vedic Numerology reads groups of cells that are all present in its grid, and the Vedic Grid calculator checks your date against them. Most combinations through the 8 are stored as testing:

CombinationTone in the engineReading from the source
2-8-4 arrowTestingSuccess only after real hard work, often not until the mid-30s, with obstacles along the way. The book calls the nature tamsik.
1-7-8 arrowMixedSpiritual and intuitive, a natural for occult fields or social work, but often gives more than it gets back.
2-8 conjunctionTestingThe book calls it a genuinely difficult combination, prone to anxiety and mood swings, worse with repetition; finances steadier after 40.
8-4 conjunctionTestingSuccess late and after struggle, suited to government work, with a stated risk of sudden loss or court matters.
3-8 aspect (Jupiter aspects Saturn)FavourableA good counsellor, judge or advocate, interested in spiritual growth; success after hard work.
(6,2,8) angularTestingGood financial standing, with friction in married life and a later marriage.

The 7-8 conjunction, the 1-8 and 9-8 aspects, the angulars (1,6,8,5) and (5,4,8) and the trine (3,9,8) also pass through the 8, and all are stored as mixed or testing. An aspect also depends on empty cells, which the book marks for each one (PDF p.119-135). The 8 must be empty for the 2-4 aspect, the 2-5 and 6-4 retro aspects, the (7,5,4) angular and the (1,2,4) trine, so a missing 8 is a precondition for those readings, and the calculator checks it itself. The Jupiter-Saturn aspect is the one favourable shape on the list, and its reading, the judge and the counsellor, is the same picture Numerology Made Easy draws for the 17.

Personal Year 8: the one that has dates

Mulank and Bhagyank never change, which makes them hard to test. A Personal Year does change, and it names a period you can check afterwards. Anyone can be in an 8 year, whatever their birth numbers. The full method is in your Personal Year number. This app computes it two ways and shows both.

The Western method

Add the birth day, the birth month and the current calendar year, and reduce to one digit with no master numbers kept. For a birth on 17 August, 2026 gives 17 + 8 + 2026 = 2051, then 8: a Personal Year 8 for the whole of 2026, between a 7 year in 2025 and a 9 year in 2027.

The Vedic method

Advanced Vedic Numerology adds the Mulank, the birth month, the last two digits of the year and the planetary number of the weekday on which the birthday falls (Sunday 1, Monday 2, Tuesday 9, Wednesday 5, Thursday 3, Friday 6, Saturday 8), and runs the year birthday to birthday. For the same 17 August birth, Mulank 8: the 2025 birthday fell on a Sunday, so 8 + 8 + 25 + 1 = 42, then 6. The 2026 birthday falls on a Monday: 8 + 8 + 26 + 2 = 44, then 8. So in 2026 the two methods give 8 and 6 until 17 August and agree on 8 after it. Saturday is Saturn's day and carries the 8 in this table.

What an 8 year is read as

  • This app's own summary (PERSONAL_YEAR_MEANING): 'A results year. Money, authority and recognition are in focus.'
  • Sally Faubion's Motivational Numerology: the harvest of the labour of the previous seven years, with the emphasis on taking action, making the requests and being confident that you deserve your goals. Her Personal Month 8 is a month of accomplishment and rewards, and her Personal Day 8 is a Power Day: ask for more, pitch the idea, take the calculated risk, with prudence, honesty and attention to detail as the conditions.
  • The AIFAS Pinnacle 8, read over a longer span: enterprise, finance, authority and material acquisition.

The sources agree, and they are more cheerful about the year than about the person: the 8 year is when effort is paid. At the scale of a day the signed-in Numerology page, described under the numerology feature, gives the theme as authority, suggests handling the money or authority conversation you have been putting off and asking for things directly rather than hinting, and warns against softening an ask until it stops being one. Its decide-today card answers yes on an 8 day, one of three yeses, with the 1 and the 4. The falsifiable part: looking back on an 8 year, did money, authority and recognition take more of it than the 7 year before, which the books give to study, or the 9 year after, which they give to endings?

Number 8 in the numerology dasha

Advanced Vedic Numerology describes a period system of its own, unrelated to the astrological Vimshottari dasha, in which nine lords run in the fixed order Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Ketu, Saturn, Mars, each for as many years as its number. Saturn rules 8 years out of a 45-year cycle. The sequence starts at the lord of your Mulank, from the day of birth. The Numerology Dasha calculator builds the timeline.

A worked Mulank 8 timeline

For the 17 August 1990 birth the engine starts with Saturn, from birth to 17 August 1998. Mars follows to 2007, the Sun to 2008, the Moon to 2010, Jupiter to 2013, Rahu to 2017, Mercury to 2022, Venus to 2028 and Ketu to 2035. Saturn returns from 17 August 2035 to 17 August 2043, at ages 45 to 53. Its own first sub-period runs from birth to 18 January 1992, and Mars's sub-period follows to 24 August 1993.

The favourable ages for a Mulank 8 recur on a nine-year step from its own number: 8, 17, 26, 35, 44, 53, 62, 71 and 80, which is what the engine's favourableYearsByAge returns. Note that 17 and 26, two of the birthdays that give Mulank 8, are on the list as ages too.

Who an 8 is said to get on with

On compatibility the 8 shows the books at their most divided, and one of them divided against itself. The compatibility feature takes several of these tables as inputs. The public Love Compatibility calculator uses only the app's harmony list: Strong when both the Mulanks and the Bhagyanks harmonise, Workable when one pair does, Needs effort when neither does.

The second row is the contradiction. Advanced Vedic Numerology's marriage rule says a pairing is good when one partner's Moolank is the anti of the other's, and its anti table pairs 8 with 1 and with 2, and lists 8 as the anti of 9. Yet its own compatibility table names 1, 2 and 9 as the 8's enemies, and its 81 Combinations grid rates 1 with 8 and 2 with 8 Very Bad. The same book therefore calls the same three pairings a good match and a bad one. The compatibility feature's long-form takes the 1-with-8 case as its example and prints the readings side by side.

Vedic Numerology Basic's graha table has its own subtlety: it lists 4 and 8 as both friendly and non-friendly, glossed 'distance' and 'permanent', which the engine records with a flag. Read plainly, an 8 with a 4 or another 8 works at a distance and not at close quarters. Oliver Tan, by contrast, says the only person compatible with an 8 is another 8, while the 81 grid rates the double 8 Bad. No list marks 3, 6 or 7 against an 8. The other sides of these tables are on the pages for number 1, number 2, number 5, number 6 and number 9.

Days, colours, letters and professions

This app's favourables bundle for a Mulank 8 is derived from Saturn: Saturday as the day, black and dark blue as colours, west as the direction, dusk and late evening as the hour, and long-term projects and labour, mining or structure-heavy work as career fields. Favourable numbers are 2, 6, 7 and 8, and favourable dates are the ones that reduce to them, from the 2nd to the 29th. The favourable signs are Capricorn, Aquarius and Libra. The favourable initials are H, Q and Z, the letters valued 8 in the Pythagorean table the engine uses; the Chaldean table behind the Name Number calculator values F and P at 8 instead.

Vedic Numerology Basic's cell for an 8 with an 8 disagrees on almost everything. Its lucky numbers are 5, 6 and 1. Its unlucky days include the 8th, 17th and 26th, the very birthdays that make an 8. Its lucky colours are light blue and light yellow, and its unlucky colours black, dark blue and red, the exact colours the app's Saturn bundle recommends. Its suitable businesses are vehicles, iron and steel, contracts, commission, writing and speeches, and publishing. Its remedy and disease list are not reproduced here.

Numero's table, which the Lucky Colours calculator uses and keys to the Life Path number, gives an 8 green and rose as best and scarlet, olive, pink, emerald and silver as worst. So the three sources share no favourable colour at all for this number. This app does not claim any of them works.

Where else an 8 turns up

  • Hidden number. Advanced Vedic Numerology adds the number of the weekday you were born on and the number of your Sun sign on the book's own table, which runs each sign from the 14th of one month to the 13th of the next. A Saturday birth, such as 8 March 1986, or a Sun in Capricorn gives a hidden 8. Check yours with the Hidden and Shadow Numbers calculator.
  • Attitude 8 (AIFAS): strong-willed, confident and often blunt, valuing money for the stability, freedom and respect it brings, and very resilient; the challenge named is authority issues and difficulty letting go of hard early experience.
  • Maturity 8 (AIFAS): in later years more commitment to work, security and assets, responsible positions for organising ability, and a caution against attachment to power, money or ego.
  • Goal Power 8 (Numerology Made Easy): positions of authority, supervision and judgement, recognition in your field, and in finance perhaps real estate or banking, or in law the bench.
  • Soul Quality 8 (Numerology Made Easy): when no letter of the birth name is valued 8, the book reads a past avoidance of money and risk, and a lesson in judgement about funds.
  • Pinnacles and challenges, described above, come out of the Numerology Profile calculator.

How to check all of this for your own date

  1. Find the two fixed numbers with the Life Path calculator. Note which position the 8 is in.
  2. Look the pair up in the 81 Combinations calculator and compare it with the table above. If your Bhagyank is a master number the result says what it was read as.
  3. Count the digit in the Lo Shu Grid, then see which lines through the 8 are complete in the Vedic Grid.
  4. Get both Personal Year figures from the Personal Year calculator and write down the dates each covers.
  5. Find your Saturn period in the Numerology Dasha calculator.
  6. For the whole profile at once without an account, use the free numerology tool. The methodology page explains how the numbers are produced, and the sources page lists the books.

Common misreadings

  • 'I am an 8' without saying which 8. Mulank, Bhagyank, name numbers and Personal Year are separate calculations.
  • Assuming Mulank 8 puts an 8 in the Lo Shu grid. It does only for the 8th, unless the month or year supplies one; the Vedic Grid adds the Mulank, so there it always does.
  • Reading 8 as simply unlucky. That is Oliver Tan's line about the 8th. Numerology Made Easy calls 17, another Mulank 8 birthday, the number of fortune and happiness, and every source reads the 8 year as the year effort is paid.
  • Quoting the compatibility tables as settled. Advanced Vedic Numerology contradicts itself on 1, 2 and 9.
  • Expecting the number to describe your Saturn. For that you need a birth chart and the Saturn in Vedic astrology page.

Questions people ask about number 8

Which birth dates give Mulank 8?
The 8th, 17th and 26th of any month. The Mulank uses the day only: 17 becomes 1 + 7 = 8 and 26 becomes 2 + 6 = 8. None of them carries a karmic debt flag, because no karmic debt number reduces to 8.
Which planet rules number 8?
Saturn, in every Vedic source this app uses and in its own trait table, which calls the 8 The Strategist. The number says nothing about the Saturn in your birth chart.
Is Mulank 8 the same as Life Path 8?
No. A person born on 17 April 1991 has Mulank 8 and Bhagyank 5; one born on 17 August 1990 has 8 in both. See Mulank, Bhagyank and Life Path.
Is 8 an unlucky number?
One book, Oliver Tan's, calls the 8th an unfortunate day to be born on, and Advanced Vedic Numerology rates many pairs with an 8 badly. Numerology Made Easy calls 17 a number of fortune, and the Personal Year 8 is read everywhere as a year of results. No source here is evidence about a particular life.
What does a Personal Year 8 mean?
A results year in every source: money, authority and recognition, and the payoff of earlier work. This app's daily card is one of the few that answers yes to deciding on an 8 day. The Western and Vedic methods often give different numbers for the same months.
Who is number 8 compatible with?
It depends on the table. Advanced Vedic Numerology's compatibility table gives 4, 5 and 6 as friends and 1, 2 and 9 as enemies, while its own marriage rule calls 8 with 1 or 2 a good pairing. This app's harmony list gives 2, 6, 7 and 8. No list marks 3, 6 or 7 against an 8.
