In short
The Arrow of Compassion is reported when a birth date contains at least one 3, one 5 and one 7, ignoring zeros. The engine returns it with the Arrow of Skepticism, because the source book names both on the same digits. Only 504 of 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010 complete it, and it almost never appears alone.
The Arrow of Compassion is the diagonal through 3, 5 and 7 among the eight Arrows of Pythagoras. Its source book names the full line twice, once as Compassion and once as its opposite, Skepticism, and this app reports both. It is one of the rarest arrows a birth date can complete. Below are the exact test the engine applies, a worked date, frequencies from a run of the engine, and the corpus books, which for once largely agree on what these three digits mean. The grid as a whole is covered in Lo Shu grid: missing numbers.
How the Arrow of Compassion is found: the rule
The input is the digit count produced by the Lo Shu grid calculator: day, month and year written without leading zeros, every digit taken, zeros dropped, and each of 1 to 9 counted.
The arrows place those counts on Erik Tao's layout from Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets (Ch. 5): 3, 6, 9 on top, 2, 5, 8 in the middle, 1, 4, 7 at the bottom. In that layout 3 is the top-left cell, 5 the centre and 7 the bottom-right, so 3-5-7 is the falling diagonal, crossing the Determination diagonal at the 5.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top (mental) | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Middle (emotional) | 2 | 5 | 8 |
| Bottom (physical) | 1 | 4 | 7 |
The engine tests every line in the same way: each of its digits needs a count above zero. A line that passes is reported, and one that fails is simply left out. So this arrow appears exactly when the date has at least one 3, one 5 and one 7. A second 7 adds nothing.
A full line comes back with two readings. Tao's positive Arrow of Compassion describes people who accept life's ups and downs with an inner calm, often drawn to music, philosophy, spirituality and the occult. His negative Arrow of Skepticism, on the same digits, describes people who find trust hard and want proof before they believe. He gives no rule for choosing, and the engine leaves both in place.
Same digits as the Emotional plane
On the Lo Shu square, 3, 5 and 7 are the middle row, which the app's separate plane check calls the Emotional plane. So whenever this arrow is complete, the Emotional plane is complete too. The two outputs come from different arrangements but test the same three digits.
Where you see it: the Lo Shu grid calculator returns the counts; the Numerology Profile calculator returns the arrows in a full profile (with a name); the free numerology tool shows only the positive name, and the signed-in Numerology page shows both.
Worked example: 5 March 1970
This is the first date the content tooling found with Compassion when scanning from 1 January 1970. Every figure was produced by running the engine on 2026-10-14.
- Write the date unpadded: day 5, month 3, year 1970. The digits are 5, 3, 1, 9, 7, 0.
- Drop the zero, leaving 5, 3, 1, 9, 7, each once.
- Count: 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 once each; 2, 4, 6 and 8 missing.
- Check the falling diagonal: 3 present, 5 present, 7 present. The engine reports 3-5-7 with both names, Compassion and Skepticism.
- Check the other lines. 1-5-9 is complete as well, so Determination and Resignation are reported. Of the rest, 4-5-6 and 2-5-8 hold only the 5, and 1-2-3, 7-8-9, 1-4-7 and 3-6-9 hold two digits each.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | 3 | - | 9 |
| Middle | - | 5 | - |
| Bottom | 1 | - | 7 |
Both diagonals are full and every other cell except the corners and centre is empty, which makes the grid an X. The Mulank is 5 (the day) and the Bhagyank is 7 (5 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7); neither enters the arrow test. On the Lo Shu plane check the same date completes two planes, Emotional (3-5-7) and Will (9-5-1), mirroring the two arrows.
How often birth dates complete it
The engine was run on every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2010, 22,280 dates.
| Digits of 3-5-7 present | Dates | What the engine reports |
|---|---|---|
| All three (the arrow) | 504 | Compassion and Skepticism |
| Two of the three | 5,346 | nothing for this line |
| One of the three | 11,228 | nothing for this line |
| None | 5,202 | nothing for this line |
At 504 dates, a little over 2 per cent, it is the second rarest of the eight arrows; only Willpower, 4-5-6, is rarer. Neither the "19" nor the "20" at the start of a year contains a 3, 5 or 7, so the whole line has to come from the day, the month and the last two digits of the year. That gives 482 dates from 1950 to 1999 and 22 from 2000 to 2010, the last in the span being 31 May 2007. The empty line is common in both centuries: 3,767 dates before 2000 and 1,435 after have no 3, 5 or 7 at all.
It is the only arrow on just 14 dates. Its partner 1-5-9, the Arrow of Determination, appears with it on 482 dates, which is every one of the 1950-1999 dates: in a 19xx year the 1 and 9 are given, and the 5 this line needs completes that diagonal too. The next partners are 1-2-3, the Arrow of the Planner (182), and 7-8-9, the Arrow of Activity (66).
What the books say
Erik Tao, Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets
Tao gives both names and both texts. He also reads lines that are not full: two numbers show some of the qualities, one or none show an area that needs work, and an empty line signifies adaptability, with no particular positive or negative trait. This line is the one he most often uses to illustrate that last, kinder reading.
In his January 1998 example the 3-5-7 line is empty, and he says there is nothing that particularly needs work on compassion. In his name-grid example he again calls 3-5-7 the adaptable row, with no real negatives. In his November 1987 example the line holds only a 7, and there he lists skepticism among the areas needing work. The engine, run on those birth dates, reports nothing for 3-5-7 on either; it has no output for partial or empty lines.
Life With Number Magick: 3-5-7 as Spirituality
Rrachita Gupta's Life With Number Magick Part 2 (the numerology masters notes) uses the Lo Shu square, 4-9-2 over 3-5-7 over 8-1-6, where 3, 5 and 7 are the middle row, the same row this app's plane check calls the Emotional plane. Gupta calls it the Arrow of Spirituality: a serious, philosophical approach to life, an inner calm that grows with age, and an accepting attitude that matures into universal compassion (pp. 149-150). The lack of 3, 5 and 7 is its Arrow of Loneliness, a person absorbed in goals with little time for others (p. 152).
This is the one arrow on which the two books broadly agree. They use the same three digits, and their positive readings overlap closely: calm, acceptance, philosophy, a spiritual bent. They still differ on the negative side. Tao attaches Skepticism to the full line; Gupta attaches Loneliness to the empty one, and Tao calls the empty line adaptable rather than lacking.
Where the corpus is silent
Advanced Vedic Numerology has no 3-5-7 arrow on its 3-1-9 / 6-7-5 / 2-8-4 grid. Among its two-digit "small arrows" it reads 7-5 as favourable for astrology and occult study, an echo of Tao's occult leaning, but on a different grid and without the 3. The Vedic grid calculator runs the Vedic arrows. No other numerology book in the corpus discusses the Arrows of Pythagoras.
What the arrow cannot tell you
- Which reading applies. Compassion and Skepticism belong to the same full line, and the source gives no way to choose.
- Whether you are spiritual or trusting. It records three digits in a date; everyone born on 5 March 1970 has it.
- Anything from the counts. Two 3s or one 3 give the same answer.
- Anything from an empty line. Tao calls an empty 3-5-7 adaptable and Gupta calls it lonely; the engine reports nothing.
The digits have their own pages: Lo Shu number 3, number 5 and number 7. The other diagonal, and its near-constant partner, is the Arrow of Determination. The only rarer arrow is the Arrow of Willpower, and the row its 3 starts is the Arrow of Intellect. The grid is defined under Lo Shu grid.
- Do I have Compassion or Skepticism?
- The app does not say, because its source does not. Erik Tao gives both names to the same full 3-5-7 line and no rule for choosing, so the engine returns both.
- Why is this arrow so rare?
- Neither 19 nor 20 contains a 3, 5 or 7, so all three must come from the rest of the date. In the run over 1950 to 2010, 504 of 22,280 dates managed it.
- Why does it nearly always come with Determination?
- In a 19xx year the 1 and 9 are already present, so the 5 this line needs also completes 1-5-9. Every 3-5-7 date from 1950 to 1999 in the run had both.
- My date has no 3, 5 or 7. Is that bad?
- The app reports nothing either way. Erik Tao reads an empty 3-5-7 as adaptable; Life With Number Magick reads the lack of these digits on the Lo Shu square as loneliness. The books disagree.
- Is this the same as the Emotional plane?
- Same digits, different system. The Emotional plane is 3-5-7 on the Lo Shu square; this arrow is 3-5-7 on Tao's layout. When one is complete, so is the other.
