In short
The Arrow of Willpower is reported when a birth date contains at least one 4, one 5 and one 6. The engine returns it together with the Arrow of Frustration, because the source book gives both readings for the same digits and no rule to choose. It is the rarest arrow: 421 of 22,280 dates from 1950 to 2010.
The Arrows of Pythagoras are eight straight lines through a 3 by 3 grid of the digits in a birth date. The line through 4, 5 and 6 carries two names in its source book: the Arrow of Willpower and the Arrow of Frustration. This page gives the exact test this app applies, a worked date with the arithmetic, how rarely birth dates complete the line, and what the corpus books say about these three digits. For the grid as a whole, start with Lo Shu grid: missing numbers.
How the Arrow of Willpower is found: the rule
The input is the digit count the Lo Shu grid calculator makes: write the date as day, month and year without leading zeros, drop every zero, and count each digit from 1 to 9. The arrows then place those nine digits in Erik Tao's arrangement (Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets, Ch. 5), not in the Lo Shu square: 3, 6, 9 on top, 2, 5, 8 in the middle, 1, 4, 7 at the bottom. In that arrangement 4, 5 and 6 form the middle column.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top (mental) | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Middle (emotional) | 2 | 5 | 8 |
| Bottom (physical) | 1 | 4 | 7 |
The engine reports the line when the counts for 4, 5 and 6 are all above zero, and not otherwise. Repeats change nothing. When the line is reported, the engine returns both of the book's readings with it. The positive one, Willpower, describes people who are persistent, determined and ambitious, with a stubborn streak. The negative one, Frustration, describes people who "expect a lot from other people" and are often disappointed by those expectations. Both are attached to the same three filled cells. The book offers no rule for deciding which applies, so the engine does not decide.
Frustration is not the empty line
It is easy to assume the negative name belongs to a date without 4, 5 and 6. In this app it does not. The engine never reports an empty or partly filled line; it reports a full line, with both names. A date missing all three digits gets nothing for this line.
Where you see it: the Numerology Profile calculator returns the arrows with the rest of the profile (it needs a name). The free numerology tool shows only the first reading, Willpower; the signed-in Numerology page shows Willpower and Frustration together.
Worked example: 16 May 1974
This is the first date the content tooling found with this arrow, scanning every third day from 1 January 1970. All figures come from running the engine on 2026-10-13.
- Write the date unpadded: day 16, month 5, year 1974. The digits are 1, 6, 5, 1, 9, 7, 4.
- There are no zeros to drop. Count: 1 twice; 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 once each; 2, 3 and 8 missing.
- Check the middle column: 4 present, 5 present, 6 present. The engine reports 4-5-6, Willpower, with Frustration alongside.
- Check the rest. 1-5-9 is also complete (1, 5, 9), and so is 1-4-7 (1, 4, 7). The engine therefore returns three lines for this date: Willpower / Frustration, Determination / Resignation and Practicality / Impracticality.
- The other five lines are partial: 7-8-9, 3-6-9 and 3-5-7 have two digits each; 1-2-3 and 2-5-8 have one.
| Row in Tao's layout | Left column | Middle column | Right column |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | - | 6 | 9 |
| Middle | - | 5 | - |
| Bottom | 11 | 4 | 7 |
The same date has a Mulank of 7 (1 + 6) and a Bhagyank of 33: 1 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 = 33, a master number the engine keeps. Neither enters the arrow test. On the Lo Shu square, the plane check finds the Will plane, 9-5-1, complete, which is the same three digits as Tao's Arrow of Determination. See Mulank, Bhagyank and Life Path for those numbers.
For contrast, 1 January 1970 gives the digits 1, 1, 1, 9, 7 once the zero is dropped. It has no 4, 5 or 6, so this line is empty, and the engine reports nothing for it; in fact that date completes no arrow at all.
How often birth dates complete it
The engine was run over every calendar date from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2010: 22,280 dates.
| Digits of 4-5-6 present | Dates | What the engine reports |
|---|---|---|
| All three (the arrow) | 421 | Willpower and Frustration |
| Two of the three | 4,939 | nothing for this line |
| One of the three | 11,317 | nothing for this line |
| None | 5,603 | nothing for this line |
At 421 dates, under 2 per cent, this is the rarest of the eight arrows. The reason is arithmetic: none of 4, 5 or 6 comes from the "19" or "20" at the start of the year, so all three must come from the day, the month and the last two digits of the year. The arrow falls away almost completely after 2000: 403 dates from 1950 to 1999, only 18 from 2000 to 2010, and the last in the span is 24 May 2006.
The line also rarely travels alone. Of the 421 dates, 403 also complete 1-5-9, the Arrow of Determination, because a date that has supplied the 5 already has the 1 and 9 from a 19xx year; only 18 dates have Willpower as their only arrow. Meanwhile the empty line is common: 5,603 dates have none of 4, 5 or 6.
What the books say
Erik Tao, Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets
Tao lists 4-5-6 twice, once among the positive arrows as Willpower and once among the negative as Frustration, with the descriptions summarised above. His instructions for reading a grid add a scale that the engine does not use: a full line shows the most dominant traits, a line with two numbers shows some of them, a line with one number or none marks an area to work on, and an empty line is said to signify adaptability, with no particular positive or negative trait.
His examples apply that scale to this line. For a January 1998 date the 4-5-6 line is empty, and the book says there is nothing that particularly needs work on willpower. For a November 1987 date, where the line holds only a 4, it lists frustration among the areas needing work. Run through the engine, the 1998 date returns no arrow and the 1987 date returns Activity and Practicality, with nothing for 4-5-6 in either case. The book, in other words, uses the negative name for a weak line in practice, while its list attaches it to the full one; the engine follows the list.
Life With Number Magick: 4-5-6 on the Lo Shu square
Rrachita Gupta's Life With Number Magick Part 2 (the numerology masters notes) uses the Lo Shu square, 4-9-2 over 3-5-7 over 8-1-6, where 4, 5 and 6 happen to form a diagonal too. It gives that diagonal a quite different reading: on its "Arrows of Strength" slides (pp. 147-153) 4-5-6 is Emotional Balance, and the lack of all three is the Arrow of Suspicion. Elsewhere it calls 4-5-6 the Fortune or Golden plane (p. 142) and a "Rajyog" arrow (p. 155). Its own Will Power arrow is 9-5-1, the Lo Shu centre column that this app's plane check calls the Will plane, and its Frustration is the lack of 2-5-8.
So the two books agree that 4, 5 and 6 make a line and disagree completely on what it means: Willpower or Frustration for one, Emotional Balance or Suspicion for the other. Note also that Tao's Frustration is a full 4-5-6, while Gupta's Suspicion is an empty one.
Where the corpus is silent
Advanced Vedic Numerology's arrows sit on its own 3-1-9 / 6-7-5 / 2-8-4 grid, cast from different digits, and none of them is 4-5-6; the Vedic grid calculator runs those. No other numerology book in the corpus discusses the Arrows of Pythagoras.
What the arrow cannot tell you
- Which of its two readings applies. The source gives both for the same digits and no way to choose, and the app does not choose.
- Anything about the person beyond the digits of the date. Everyone born on 16 May 1974 has it.
- Anything from the counts. Two 5s or one 5 give the same answer.
- Whether another system agrees. On the Lo Shu square the same digits carry Gupta's different names.
The three digits have their own pages: Lo Shu number 4, number 5 and number 6. The sibling arrows through the centre are the Arrow of Determination, the Arrow of Emotions and the Arrow of Compassion. The grid is defined in the glossary under Lo Shu grid.
- Do I have Willpower or Frustration?
- The app cannot say, and neither can its source. Erik Tao gives both names to the same full 4-5-6 line and no rule for choosing, so the engine returns both together.
- If I have no 4, 5 or 6, do I have the Arrow of Frustration?
- Not in this app. The engine reports only full lines. Tao's own examples use "frustration" loosely for a weak 4-5-6 line, and Life With Number Magick calls an empty 4-5-6 the Arrow of Suspicion, but the app applies neither.
- Why is this arrow so rare?
- Because none of its digits comes from the 19 or 20 of the year. In the 1950-2010 sweep only 421 of 22,280 dates complete it, 18 of them after 2000.
- Is it the same as the Will plane?
- No. The Will plane is 9-5-1 on the Lo Shu square, which is Tao's Arrow of Determination. Willpower is 4-5-6, a different set of digits.
