In short
Rahu in Scorpio puts the Moon's ascending node in Mars's sign, with Ketu always in Taurus. Uttara Kalamrita makes it debilitation, while other texts in the corpus differ, and this app's engine labels the nodes Neutral everywhere. The house it occupies does most of the work.
Rahu in Scorpio is the Moon's ascending node placed in a sign ruled by Mars, with Ketu always opposite in Taurus. Some classical texts give Scorpio a special status for Rahu, others do not, and this app's engine assigns the nodes no dignity at all. What remains is the house Scorpio occupies, a handful of sign-qualified lines, and the axis the two nodes form.
This page covers only the combination. For Rahu as a graha - its significations, its dasha and the house placements - start with Rahu in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself see Scorpio, Vrishchika Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Rahu in Scorpio, where they disagree, how this app's engine handles it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Rahu in Scorpio: dignity, and how this app decides it
This app's engine gives Rahu no dignity at all. The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js looks the planet up in its DIGNITY table, which has rows for the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn only; for Rahu it finds nothing and returns Neutral, at every degree of every sign. The natural friendship table (NATURAL_RELATIONS) likewise covers the seven grahas only - the code comment says the nodes are "excluded from dignity scoring here". So Saturn-style labels such as Exalted or Debilitated never appear for Rahu on your Kundali page, and Rahu in Scorpio is shown as Neutral from 0 to 30 degrees. The terms themselves are explained under dignity, uchcha, neecha and Moolatrikona.
| Degrees of Scorpio | Label in this engine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Neutral | No DIGNITY row for Rahu; dignityOf returns Neutral |
That is a deliberate silence, not an oversight, because the classical texts do not agree on the nodes' dignities. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, introducing the effects of Rahu's dasha, says it will give the exaltation and debilitation signs of Rahu and Ketu, and then names: Rahu exalted in Vrishabh (Taurus), Ketu exalted in Vrischik (Scorpio); Moolatrikona Mithun (Gemini) for Rahu and Dhanu (Sagittarius) for Ketu; own signs Kumbh (Aquarius) for Rahu and Vrischik (Scorpio) for Ketu - adding that "some sages" make Kanya (Virgo) Rahu's own sign and Meen (Pisces) Ketu's. The passage does not go on to name the debilitation signs. Bhrigu Sutras, in its introduction to the nodes, calls the question "quite a controversy amongst the ancients" and quotes two more works: Uttara Kalamrita (Rahu exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, the reverse for Ketu; Aquarius Rahu's own sign and Scorpio Ketu's; Moolatrikona Gemini for Rahu and Virgo for Ketu) and Sanketnidhi (Rahu exalted in Gemini with Virgo its own sign; Ketu exalted in Sagittarius with Pisces its own sign).
| Source | Rahu exalted | Rahu debilitated | Rahu Moolatrikona | Rahu own sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 | Taurus | not named | Gemini | Aquarius (Virgo per "some sages") |
| Uttara Kalamrita, quoted in Bhrigu Sutras | Taurus | Scorpio | Gemini | Aquarius |
| Sanketnidhi, quoted in Bhrigu Sutras | Gemini | not given | not given | Virgo |
| This app's engine | none | none | none | none (Neutral everywhere) |
For Scorpio specifically: Uttara Kalamrita (quoted in Bhrigu Sutras) calls it Rahu's debilitation. No other source in the corpus agrees or disagrees about this sign in particular, and the engine does not adopt any of these labels. The signs the texts do name have their own pages: Rahu in Taurus, Rahu in Gemini, Rahu in Virgo and Rahu in Aquarius.
Because the engine attaches no friendship to Rahu, the fivefold relation that makes a Saturn or a Mars label change from chart to chart does not apply either. What does apply is Scorpio's lord, Mars: it rules the sign Rahu occupies, so where Mars sits is part of how many readers judge Rahu - but that is a reading practice, and the corpus passages quoted on this page do not state it as a rule for Rahu in Scorpio. For what Rahu is as a shadow graha see Rahu and chhaya graha.
The nakshatras Rahu moves through in Scorpio
Scorpio holds pada 4 of Vishakha; all four padas of Anuradha; and all four padas of Jyeshtha. Rahu moves backwards through the zodiac, so it enters Scorpio at its last degree and reaches these nakshatras in reverse order - Jyeshtha, then Anuradha, then Vishakha. The nakshatra pages go further: Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Scorpio | Degrees of Scorpio | Ketu is then in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vishakha | 4 | 0 degrees to 3 degrees 20 minutes | Taurus, at the same degree |
| Anuradha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 3 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes | Taurus, at the same degree |
| Jyeshtha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 16 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees | Taurus, at the same degree |
What the classical texts say about Rahu in Scorpio
Saravali and BPHS: no sign-by-sign line for the nodes
Saravali gives each of the seven grahas a chapter on its effects in the twelve signs (the Sun in Ch. 22, the Moon in Ch. 23, Mars in Ch. 25, Mercury in Ch. 26, Jupiter in Ch. 27, Venus in Ch. 28, Saturn in Ch. 29). It has no such chapter for Rahu or Ketu, and the corpus file was searched for any line placing Rahu in Scorpio. BPHS likewise has no sign-by-sign line for either node. So the character readings that the planet-in-sign pages for the seven grahas quote simply do not exist for Rahu in Scorpio in these two texts, and this page does not supply one.
Where the texts do name Scorpio
A few rules name signs for the nodes, almost always together with a house - Bhrigu Sutras Ch. 8 Sutras 1-4 (Aries, Taurus, Cancer in the 1st), Saravali Ch. 12 Sl. 10-11 (Rahu rising in Aries, Taurus or Cancer) and the Chamatkar Chintamani lines quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary (Ketu in Aries, Gemini, Virgo or Scorpio in particular houses). None of them names Scorpio for Rahu, so on this point the corpus is silent.
BPHS on the Rahu Mahadasha
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 lists the conditions under which Rahu's dasha is read well: Rahu in its exaltation sign "etc.", or joined with or aspected by benefics, in a "benefic Rashi", and in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd house. Sl. 40-43 give the opposite: Rahu in the 8th or 12th, with a malefic or maraka, or in its debilitation sign. The passage does not define "benefic Rashi". If it is read as a sign ruled by a natural benefic - this engine's BENEFICS list is Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon - then Scorpio, ruled by Mars, would not; that reading is this page's, not the text's. Timing has its own page: Rahu Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras on the nodes in general
The introduction to the nodes in Bhrigu Sutras adds two general remarks: that "Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars", stated as a belief rather than a rule, and that the nodes move retrograde at about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year, staying in a sign for about 18 months. It also gives a bleak list of significations for both nodes, which this page reports only as the text's statement. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara was searched and has nothing on Rahu in Scorpio.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Rahu and Ketu are always opposite each other, so Rahu in Scorpio means Ketu in Taurus (the Bhrigu Sutras introduction: the two nodes are "exactly 180 degrees apart").
- Disputed: the nodes' dignities. BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi assign different exaltation, Moolatrikona and own signs, and BPHS does not name a debilitation sign in the passage that promises one. This engine follows none of them.
- Silent: neither Saravali nor BPHS has a sign-by-sign character line for Rahu.
- Silent again: no sign-qualified house line in the corpus names Scorpio for Rahu.
Where Rahu in Scorpio falls from each Lagna
The nodes rule no sign in this engine, so there is no lordship to tabulate - only the house Scorpio occupies and the house Taurus occupies for Ketu. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical. The last column names any corpus line that needs exactly that house with Rahu in Scorpio. The house pages, such as Rahu in the 8th house and Rahu in the 2nd house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of Rahu (Scorpio) | House of Ketu (Taurus) | Sign-qualified line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8th | 2nd | - |
| Taurus | 7th | 1st | - |
| Gemini | 6th | 12th | - |
| Cancer | 5th | 11th | - |
| Leo | 4th | 10th | - |
| Virgo | 3rd | 9th | - |
| Libra | 2nd | 8th | - |
| Scorpio | 1st | 7th | - |
| Sagittarius | 12th | 6th | - |
| Capricorn | 11th | 5th | - |
| Aquarius | 10th | 4th | - |
| Pisces | 9th | 3rd | - |
How often Rahu is in Scorpio
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Rahu was in Scorpio in 249 of them, 8.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The nodes move steadily backwards - Bhrigu Sutras gives about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year and about 18 months in a sign - so every sign gets a similar share over a long sample, and the births with Rahu in Scorpio cluster in a few stretches of time. In the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, mean node, UTC), Rahu was in Scorpio:
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 30 October 1992 | 19 May 1994 |
| 6 June 2011 | 23 December 2012 |
| 11 January 2030 | 31 July 2031 |
| 17 August 2048 | 6 March 2050 |
The transit reading - the nodes moving through this axis now, counted from your Moon - has its own page: Rahu transit in Scorpio.
Worked example: 31 October 1992, 11:38 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Sagittarius rises at 20.85 degrees. Rahu is at 29.94 degrees of Scorpio, in Jyeshtha pada 4, in the 12th house; Ketu is at the same degree of Taurus, in the 6th. The engine marks both nodes retrograde, as it always does, and labels both Neutral, as it always does.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra 14.32 | Swati (3) | 11 | Debilitated |
| Moon | Sagittarius 20.73 | Purva Ashadha (3) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 28.93 | Punarvasu (3) | 7 | Enemy sign |
| Mercury | Scorpio 7.87 | Anuradha (2) | 12 | Enemy sign |
| Jupiter | Virgo 10.44 | Hasta (1) | 10 | Neutral |
| Venus | Scorpio 20.22 | Jyeshtha (2) | 12 | Enemy sign |
| Saturn | Capricorn 18.19 | Shravana (3) | 2 | Own sign |
| Rahu | Scorpio 29.94, retrograde | Jyeshtha (4) | 12 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Taurus 29.94, retrograde | Mrigashira (2) | 6 | Neutral |
Sign lord. Mars, the lord of Scorpio, is in Gemini in the 7th house, labelled Enemy sign. The engine does not feed this into Rahu's label, but it is the first thing to read alongside it.
Sign-qualified lines. Scorpio is the 12th house in this chart. No line in the corpus names Scorpio for Rahu, so there is nothing sign-specific to quote. BPHS Ch. 47's dasha conditions are house-based: the 12th is one of the houses Sl. 40-43 lists against Rahu.
Aspects. In this engine the nodes cast only the 7th-house aspect, and receive aspects like any house: every graha aspects the 7th from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Ketu (in the 6th) aspects the 12th. Ketu's aspect is automatic: being always in the 7th from Rahu, it always aspects it under this rule.
Company. Mercury (7.87), Venus (20.22) share Scorpio with Rahu. The corpus passages quoted here give no reading for that combination in this sign, so none is added.
Any reader can re-enter this birth - the date, the time in IST and New Delhi as the place - in the Birth Chart calculator and get the same positions. Whether the rest of the chart falls between the nodes is a separate test, done by the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator and explained in Kaal Sarp Dosha explained.
Checking Rahu in Scorpio in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Rahu is in Scorpio and Ketu in Taurus, and note the degree and nakshatra.
- Note the house Scorpio occupies and the house Taurus occupies: that is the axis the two nodes hold in your chart.
- Look at the house rather than the sign: the corpus has no line that names Scorpio for Rahu.
- Find Mars, the lord of Scorpio, and note its sign, house and dignity.
- Look at timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and at the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator. Note that the engine always marks the nodes vakri (retrograde).
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Rahu exalted in Scorpio?
- No text in the corpus says so. Rahu's exaltation is put in Taurus (BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita) or Gemini (Sanketnidhi), and this engine assigns the nodes no dignity at all.
- Why does my Kundali show Rahu as Neutral?
- Because the engine's dignity table has no row for the nodes. dignityOf returns Neutral for Rahu in every sign and degree; it is a deliberate choice given that the classical texts disagree.
- If Rahu is in Scorpio, where is Ketu?
- Always in Taurus, at the same degree. See Ketu in Taurus.
- Does Saravali describe Rahu in Scorpio?
- No. Saravali has sign chapters for the seven grahas only. Nothing in the Saravali file places Rahu or Ketu in this sign.
- How common is Rahu in Scorpio?
- In this app's sample it was in Scorpio in 249 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3 per cent. The nodes spend roughly 18 months in each sign (Bhrigu Sutras), so the births cluster in particular stretches of years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the sign lord and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
