In short
Sun in Libra is the Sun in its debilitation sign: BPHS Ch. 3 puts its fall in the 7th sign from Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and this app labels every degree of Libra Debilitated. Saravali Ch. 22 gives it one of the chapter's harshest lines, and then lets a Jupiter or Venus aspect turn the reading.
Sun in Libra is the Sun at the bottom of its range. Libra is the 7th sign from Aries, the exaltation sign, and BPHS makes the 7th sign from exaltation the debilitation sign. It is ruled by Venus, a natural enemy of the Sun. What the placement does with its strength or weakness is a separate question, answered by the house Libra occupies in your chart, the house Leo occupies (the one sign the Sun rules), and the planets that aspect it.
This page covers only the combination. For the Sun as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with the Sun in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Libra means - see Libra, Tula Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about the Sun in Libra specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. If you only want to know which sign your Sun is in, the Sun Sign calculator gives the sidereal sign in one step.
Sun in Libra: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 sets the frame for every Sun page: the Sun's exaltation (uchcha) is Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and its debilitation (neecha) is Libra, the 7th sign from it, deepest at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 gives the first 20 degrees of Leo as the Sun's Moolatrikona and the rest of Leo as its own house (swakshetra). Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same Leo boundary. Every other sign is judged by the Sun's relationship with the sign's lord.
Because Libra is the debilitation sign, the engine labels it Debilitated before the friendship test is reached, and no other planet can change the label. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 says the same degrees apply to deep fall as to deep exaltation, so the Sun's deepest fall is at 10 degrees of Libra; as with Aries, the label is the same at every degree, and only the exaltation-based strength figure moves.
| Degrees of Libra | Label in this engine (natural relationship only) |
|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Debilitated |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf in the kundali engine, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. For the Sun the tables hold one exaltation sign (Aries), one own sign (Leo), one Moolatrikona band (Leo 0 to 20 degrees) and one debilitation sign (Libra). Libra is caught by one of the early tests, so the friendship step is never reached and no other planet's position can change the label.
One difference from the text is worth knowing. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades results: exaltation gives the full good effects, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's sign an eighth, and debilitation or an enemy's sign none. The engine keeps the same order but on its own scale: a sthana strength of 10 for exaltation and Moolatrikona, 7.5 for own sign, 6.25 for a friendly sign, 5 for neutral, 0 for an enemy sign or debilitation. For the Sun in Libra the result is a sthana of 0 by natural relationship.
For comparison, the neighbouring and contrasting pages: Sun in Virgo (the sign before), Sun in Scorpio (the sign after), and Sun in Aries and Sun in Virgo. The general term is explained under dignity.
The nakshatras the Sun moves through in Libra
Libra holds padas 3, 4 of Chitra, all four padas of Swati, padas 1, 2 and 3 of Vishakha. Because the Sun's label in this sign does not depend on its degree, the nakshatra does not change the dignity; it matters for the Vimshottari dasha only through the Moon, and for the Sun's own pada in the navamsa (D9) chart. The nakshatra pages go further: Chitra, Swati and Vishakha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Libra |
|---|---|
| Chitra | 3, 4 |
| Swati | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Vishakha | 1, 2, 3 |
What the classical texts say about the Sun in Libra
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 44-45: the sign line
Saravali's Libra line is severe: frustration, losses and heavy expense, living abroad out of distress, meanness, little affection, a living from trading gold and metals, jealousy, working for others and royal disfavour. This page reports it as the text's claim, briefly, and does not adopt its voice; this app reframes such lines as conditions to examine, not verdicts.
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 12-17: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads the Sun in a sign of Venus (Taurus or Libra) under the aspect of each other planet, one line per planet - lines it shares with the other sign of the same lord. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Moon: soft speech, many dependants, a livelihood connected with water, and a remark about courtesans that is the text's own.
- Aspected by Mars: brave, fond of battle, bright in appearance, wealth and fame won by valour, with some bodily deformity.
- Aspected by Mercury: skill in drawing, writing, poetry, authorship and singing, and a good physique.
- Aspected by Jupiter: many foes and many friends, a king's minister, beautiful eyes, splendour, a contented ruler.
- Aspected by Venus: a king or a king's minister, a spouse, wealth and pleasures, wise but timid.
- Aspected by Saturn: meanness, indolence, unsuitable company and illness, in the text's words (the sloka names the Sun "in fall, or in Taurus").
Two readings follow. First, the sign does not settle the matter on its own: the same chapter that gives the sign line also gives aspect lines that pull it either way. Second, the Jupiter line is favourable even in this group, where the sign line is weak, which fits Jupiter's place among the Sun's natural friends; the other lines do not track the friendship table so neatly - Venus, a natural enemy, gets a favourable line in its own signs. The text gives no reason for the exceptions, and this page does not supply one.
Saravali Ch. 45: the dignity lines
Saravali Ch. 45 Sl. 15-18 adds a general line for any debilitated Sun: servitude and humiliation at the hands of one's own people. Again, the text's claim.
BPHS
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign character line for the Sun. What it says about the Sun in Libra comes through its rules: the dignities of Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, the relationships of Sl. 55-58 and the ratio of effects of Sl. 59-60, all used above. Saravali is the only text in this corpus that writes a line for the Sun in each sign.
- Agreed: the Sun is exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra, and has Leo 0-20 as Moolatrikona (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali Ch. 22 changes the verdict by the aspecting planet; BPHS weighs the relationship in the chart itself.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for the Sun in Libra as such.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine scores them equally.
How the Lagna decides the house of the Sun in Libra
Saravali's lines describe the sign. The house comes from the ascendant: counted whole-sign, Libra is the 1st house for a Libra Lagna, the 10th for a Capricorn Lagna, and so on round the zodiac. The Sun rules one sign, Leo, so it rules exactly one house, and the table shows both for every Lagna. The house pages, such as the Sun in the 7th house, the Sun in the 10th house and the Sun in the 1st house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of the Sun (Libra) | House the Sun rules (Leo) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 7th | 5th |
| Taurus | 6th | 4th |
| Gemini | 5th | 3rd |
| Cancer | 4th | 2nd |
| Leo | 3rd | 1st |
| Virgo | 2nd | 12th |
| Libra | 1st | 11th |
| Scorpio | 12th | 10th |
| Sagittarius | 11th | 9th |
| Capricorn | 10th | 8th |
| Aquarius | 9th | 7th |
| Pisces | 8th | 6th |
Read the two columns together. Where the Sun sits describes where its qualities are expressed; the house Leo occupies is the area of life the Sun governs as a lord. A weakly placed Sun carries that strength into both, which is why the engine's Kundali page reads the house Leo occupies through the Sun as its lord. The texts in this corpus do not give a separate line for each Lagna with the Sun in Libra, so the table stops at the mechanics.
Worked example: 19 October 1985, 17:44 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Aries rises at 2.43 degrees. The Sun is at 2.4 degrees of Libra, in Chitra pada 3, in the 7th house. The engine labels it Debilitated, as it would at any degree of Libra; the friendship test is never reached, so the fivefold relationship plays no part.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra 2.4 | Chitra (3) | 7 | Debilitated |
| Moon | Sagittarius 15.5 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 9 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Virgo 1.25 | Uttara Phalguni (2) | 6 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Libra 19.55 | Swati (4) | 7 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 13.94 | Shravana (2) | 10 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Virgo 10.03 | Hasta (1) | 6 | Debilitated |
| Saturn | Scorpio 3.06 | Vishakha (4) | 8 | Neutral |
| Rahu | Aries 16.06 | Bharani (1) | 1 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 16.06 | Swati (3) | 7 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Aries Lagna, Leo is the 5th house, so the Sun rules the 5th and sits in the 7th. The 7th is not a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th).
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th), none of the six other grahas aspects the 7th house here. So none of the Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 12-17 aspect lines applies to this chart, only the bare sign line of Sl. 44-45. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking the aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Mercury (19.55 degrees) and Ketu (16.06 degrees) share Libra with the Sun. Sharing a sign is not the same as an aspect in Saravali's scheme, and Ch. 22 has no line for a planet in the same sign as the Sun, so this page adds none.
Anyone can check this: enter the date, time and New Delhi in the Birth Chart calculator and the same positions come back. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows where the Sun's pada places it in the ninth-division chart, which some readers weigh alongside the sign.
How often the Sun is in Libra
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the Sun was in Libra in 246 of them, 8.2 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. Across the twelve Sun pages the counts run from 239 to 260 per sign, close to an even twelfth (250) each, because the Sun moves through the zodiac at a nearly steady pace and spends roughly a month in each sign every year.
Checking the Sun in Libra in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Sun is in Libra. Note its degree.
- Note the dignity: for Libra it is fixed, whatever else the chart holds.
- Note the house Libra occupies and the house Leo occupies: that is where the Sun sits and what it rules.
- List any planet in the 7th sign from Libra, Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 12-17 line into play.
- For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Sun Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is the Sun exalted or debilitated in Libra?
- Debilitated. Libra is the 7th sign from Aries, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts the Sun's fall there, deepest at 10 degrees. This engine labels every degree of Libra Debilitated.
- Does the degree of the Sun in Libra change its dignity?
- No. The label is the same at every degree of Libra. The degree matters only for the exaltation-based strength figure, which peaks or bottoms out at 10 degrees.
- Can another planet change the Sun's dignity in Libra?
- No. Libra is caught by the engine's debilitation test before the friendship test, so no other planet affects the label. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 12-17.
- Is the Sun in Libra the same as being a Libra in Western astrology?
- Not necessarily. This app uses the sidereal zodiac, so the dates the Sun spends in each sign differ from the tropical sun-sign dates used in Western astrology. The Sun Sign calculator gives your sidereal Sun sign directly.
- Which Saravali lines apply to my Sun in Libra?
- Always the sign line, Ch. 22 Sl. 44-45. The aspect lines of Sl. 12-17 apply only for the planets that actually aspect the Sun in your chart, and in many charts none does.
- How common is the Sun in Libra?
- In this app's sample it was in Libra in 246 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2 per cent - close to one twelfth, as expected for the Sun's steady pace.
