In short
Sun in Aries is the Sun in its exaltation sign: BPHS Ch. 3 makes Aries its uchcha, deepest at 10 degrees, and this app labels every degree of Aries Exalted. Saravali Ch. 22 reads it as learning, valour and royal standing, then changes the verdict by aspect. The house Aries occupies from your Lagna decides where that strength shows.
Sun in Aries is the Sun at the top of its range. Aries is the Sun's exaltation sign, the 1st sign of the zodiac and a sign ruled by Mars, one of the Sun's natural friends. No other placement of the Sun gets a better label in this app's engine. What the placement does with its strength or weakness is a separate question, answered by the house Aries occupies in your chart, the house Leo occupies (the one sign the Sun rules), and the planets that aspect it.
This page covers only the combination. For the Sun as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with the Sun in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Aries means - see Aries, Mesha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about the Sun in Aries specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. If you only want to know which sign your Sun is in, the Sun Sign calculator gives the sidereal sign in one step.
Sun in Aries: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 sets the frame for every Sun page: the Sun's exaltation (uchcha) is Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and its debilitation (neecha) is Libra, the 7th sign from it, deepest at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 gives the first 20 degrees of Leo as the Sun's Moolatrikona and the rest of Leo as its own house (swakshetra). Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same Leo boundary. Every other sign is judged by the Sun's relationship with the sign's lord.
Because Aries is the exaltation sign, the engine's very first test settles the matter and the friendship test is never reached. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts the deepest exaltation at 10 degrees of Aries; the engine uses the same point (its debilitation table holds 10 for the Sun, and deep exaltation is exactly opposite) when it computes the exaltation-based strength, but the dignity label itself does not change with the degree: 1 degree and 29 degrees of Aries are both Exalted.
| Degrees of Aries | Label in this engine (natural relationship only) |
|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Exalted |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf in the kundali engine, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. For the Sun the tables hold one exaltation sign (Aries), one own sign (Leo), one Moolatrikona band (Leo 0 to 20 degrees) and one debilitation sign (Libra). Aries is caught by one of the early tests, so the friendship step is never reached and no other planet's position can change the label.
One difference from the text is worth knowing. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades results: exaltation gives the full good effects, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's sign an eighth, and debilitation or an enemy's sign none. The engine keeps the same order but on its own scale: a sthana strength of 10 for exaltation and Moolatrikona, 7.5 for own sign, 6.25 for a friendly sign, 5 for neutral, 0 for an enemy sign or debilitation. For the Sun in Aries the result is a sthana of 10 by natural relationship.
For comparison, the neighbouring and contrasting pages: Sun in Pisces (the sign before), Sun in Taurus (the sign after), and Sun in Libra and Sun in Leo. The general term is explained under dignity.
The nakshatras the Sun moves through in Aries
Aries holds all four padas of Ashwini, all four padas of Bharani and pada 1 of Krittika. Because the Sun's label in this sign does not depend on its degree, the nakshatra does not change the dignity; it matters for the Vimshottari dasha only through the Moon, and for the Sun's own pada in the navamsa (D9) chart. The nakshatra pages go further: Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Aries |
|---|---|
| Ashwini | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Bharani | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Krittika | 1 |
What the classical texts say about the Sun in Aries
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 2-3: the sign line
Saravali gives the Sun in Aries a generous line: someone who comments on the meaning of the shastras, is known in the arts, is fond of war and fierce, attached to duty, fond of travel, strong-boned, good in deeds and valorous, splendid and strong; the line ends by saying the native becomes a king. It also names bilious and blood disorders, which is the text's statement and not medical advice.
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 4-9: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads the Sun in a sign of Mars (Aries or Scorpio) under the aspect of each other planet, one line per planet - lines it shares with the other sign of the same lord. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Moon: generous in giving, many servants, charming, liked by women, of soft build.
- Aspected by Mars: courage shown in battle, a harsh streak, reddish eyes, hands and feet, splendour and strength.
- Aspected by Mercury: working for others, modest wealth, little strength and much grief, in the text's words.
- Aspected by Jupiter: plenty of money, giving freely, a king's minister, a judge, a person of eminence.
- Aspected by Venus: the text turns harsh here: a difficult marriage, many enemies, few relatives, poverty and a skin disease (the text's claim, not medical advice).
- Aspected by Saturn: grief over bodily ailments, intense passion in undertakings, and slowness of wit, in the text's words.
Two readings follow. First, the sign does not settle the matter on its own: the same chapter that gives the sign line also gives aspect lines that pull it either way. Second, the Jupiter line is favourable here as it is throughout the chapter, which fits Jupiter's place among the Sun's natural friends; the other lines do not track the friendship table so neatly. The text gives no reason for the exceptions, and this page does not supply one.
Saravali Ch. 45: the dignity lines
Saravali Ch. 45 Sl. 1-4, the chapter on dignities, has its own line for an exalted Sun: fierce, very wealthy and pre-eminent. That agrees in tone with the Ch. 22 sign line.
BPHS
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign character line for the Sun. What it says about the Sun in Aries comes through its rules: the dignities of Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, the relationships of Sl. 55-58 and the ratio of effects of Sl. 59-60, all used above. Saravali is the only text in this corpus that writes a line for the Sun in each sign.
- Agreed: the Sun is exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra, and has Leo 0-20 as Moolatrikona (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali Ch. 22 changes the verdict by the aspecting planet; BPHS weighs the relationship in the chart itself.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for the Sun in Aries as such.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine scores them equally.
How the Lagna decides the house of the Sun in Aries
Saravali's lines describe the sign. The house comes from the ascendant: counted whole-sign, Aries is the 1st house for a Aries Lagna, the 10th for a Cancer Lagna, and so on round the zodiac. The Sun rules one sign, Leo, so it rules exactly one house, and the table shows both for every Lagna. The house pages, such as the Sun in the 1st house, the Sun in the 10th house and the Sun in the 1st house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of the Sun (Aries) | House the Sun rules (Leo) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1st | 5th |
| Taurus | 12th | 4th |
| Gemini | 11th | 3rd |
| Cancer | 10th | 2nd |
| Leo | 9th | 1st |
| Virgo | 8th | 12th |
| Libra | 7th | 11th |
| Scorpio | 6th | 10th |
| Sagittarius | 5th | 9th |
| Capricorn | 4th | 8th |
| Aquarius | 3rd | 7th |
| Pisces | 2nd | 6th |
Read the two columns together. Where the Sun sits describes where its qualities are expressed; the house Leo occupies is the area of life the Sun governs as a lord. A strongly placed Sun carries that strength into both, which is why the engine's Kundali page reads the house Leo occupies through the Sun as its lord. The texts in this corpus do not give a separate line for each Lagna with the Sun in Aries, so the table stops at the mechanics.
Worked example: 20 April 1985, 13:24 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Cancer rises at 26.31 degrees. The Sun is at 6.53 degrees of Aries, in Ashwini pada 2, in the 10th house. The engine labels it Exalted, as it would at any degree of Aries; the friendship test is never reached, so the fivefold relationship plays no part.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries 6.53 | Ashwini (2) | 10 | Exalted |
| Moon | Aries 7.67 | Ashwini (3) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Taurus 2.14 | Krittika (2) | 11 | Friendly sign |
| Mercury | Pisces 13.48 | Uttara Bhadrapada (4) | 9 | Debilitated |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 20.24 | Shravana (4) | 7 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Pisces 12.79, retrograde | Uttara Bhadrapada (3) | 9 | Exalted |
| Saturn | Scorpio 2.97, retrograde | Vishakha (4) | 5 | Enemy sign |
| Rahu | Aries 25.71 | Bharani (4) | 10 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 25.71 | Vishakha (2) | 4 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Cancer Lagna, Leo is the 2nd house, so the Sun rules the 2nd and sits in the 10th. The 10th is not a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th).
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th), none of the six other grahas aspects the 10th house here. So none of the Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 4-9 aspect lines applies to this chart, only the bare sign line of Sl. 2-3. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking the aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Moon (7.67 degrees) and Rahu (25.71 degrees) share Aries with the Sun. Sharing a sign is not the same as an aspect in Saravali's scheme, and Ch. 22 has no line for a planet in the same sign as the Sun, so this page adds none. The engine flags Moon as combust - close enough to the Sun to be lost in its light; see the glossary entry on combustion.
Anyone can check this: enter the date, time and New Delhi in the Birth Chart calculator and the same positions come back. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows where the Sun's pada places it in the ninth-division chart, which some readers weigh alongside the sign.
How often the Sun is in Aries
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the Sun was in Aries in 252 of them, 8.4 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. Across the twelve Sun pages the counts run from 239 to 260 per sign, close to an even twelfth (250) each, because the Sun moves through the zodiac at a nearly steady pace and spends roughly a month in each sign every year.
Checking the Sun in Aries in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Sun is in Aries. Note its degree.
- Note the dignity: for Aries it is fixed, whatever else the chart holds.
- Note the house Aries occupies and the house Leo occupies: that is where the Sun sits and what it rules.
- List any planet in the 7th sign from Aries, Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 4-9 line into play.
- For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Sun Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is the Sun exalted or debilitated in Aries?
- Exalted. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 makes Aries the Sun's exaltation sign, deepest at 10 degrees, and this engine labels every degree of Aries Exalted.
- Does the degree of the Sun in Aries change its dignity?
- No. The label is the same at every degree of Aries. The degree matters only for the exaltation-based strength figure, which peaks or bottoms out at 10 degrees.
- Can another planet change the Sun's dignity in Aries?
- No. Aries is caught by the engine's exaltation test before the friendship test, so no other planet affects the label. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 4-9.
- Is the Sun in Aries the same as being a Aries in Western astrology?
- Not necessarily. This app uses the sidereal zodiac, so the dates the Sun spends in each sign differ from the tropical sun-sign dates used in Western astrology. The Sun Sign calculator gives your sidereal Sun sign directly.
- Which Saravali lines apply to my Sun in Aries?
- Always the sign line, Ch. 22 Sl. 2-3. The aspect lines of Sl. 4-9 apply only for the planets that actually aspect the Sun in your chart, and in many charts none does.
- How common is the Sun in Aries?
- In this app's sample it was in Aries in 252 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.4 per cent - close to one twelfth, as expected for the Sun's steady pace.
