In short
Sun in Pisces is the Sun in a sign ruled by Jupiter, its natural friend, so this app labels it Friendly sign by natural relationship. In a real chart the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 can raise or lower that. Saravali Ch. 22 reads it as friendly, learned and prosperous, and shares its aspect lines with Sagittarius.
Sun in Pisces is the Sun in the dual water sign ruled by Jupiter, the last sign of the zodiac, where Venus is exalted and Mercury debilitated. For the Sun it is a friend's sign. What the placement does with its strength or weakness is a separate question, answered by the house Pisces occupies in your chart, the house Leo occupies (the one sign the Sun rules), and the planets that aspect it.
This page covers only the combination. For the Sun as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with the Sun in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Pisces means - see Pisces, Meena Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about the Sun in Pisces specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. If you only want to know which sign your Sun is in, the Sun Sign calculator gives the sidereal sign in one step.
Sun in Pisces: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 sets the frame for every Sun page: the Sun's exaltation (uchcha) is Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and its debilitation (neecha) is Libra, the 7th sign from it, deepest at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 gives the first 20 degrees of Leo as the Sun's Moolatrikona and the rest of Leo as its own house (swakshetra). Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same Leo boundary. Every other sign is judged by the Sun's relationship with the sign's lord.
Jupiter is the lord of Pisces and the engine's natural-relationship table lists Jupiter among the Sun's friends. With no chart supplied, dignityOf returns Friendly sign for all 30 degrees. Jupiter is one of its three natural friends (the Moon, Mars and Jupiter).
| Degrees of Pisces | Label in this engine (natural relationship only) |
|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Friendly sign |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf in the kundali engine, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. For the Sun the tables hold one exaltation sign (Aries), one own sign (Leo), one Moolatrikona band (Leo 0 to 20 degrees) and one debilitation sign (Libra). Pisces is none of these, so the label is decided by the last step, the relationship between the Sun and Jupiter.
That last step is where a real chart differs from the table above. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives the natural relationship (naisargika maitri); Sl. 56 adds a temporary relationship (tatkalika maitri) from where the two planets sit in a given chart; and Sl. 57-58 combine the two into a fivefold scale from Great Friend to Great Enemy. The engine applies that compound relation whenever it has a whole chart. So the Sun in Pisces reads Friendly sign when Jupiter is a temporary friend or the natural relation stands alone, and drops to Neutral when Jupiter sits in a temporary-enemy position.
One difference from the text is worth knowing. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades results: exaltation gives the full good effects, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's sign an eighth, and debilitation or an enemy's sign none. The engine keeps the same order but on its own scale: a sthana strength of 10 for exaltation and Moolatrikona, 7.5 for own sign, 6.25 for a friendly sign, 5 for neutral, 0 for an enemy sign or debilitation. For the Sun in Pisces the result is a sthana of 6.25 by natural relationship.
For comparison, the neighbouring and contrasting pages: Sun in Aquarius (the sign before), Sun in Aries (the sign after), and Sun in Virgo and Sun in Aries. The general term is explained under dignity.
The nakshatras the Sun moves through in Pisces
Pisces holds pada 4 of Purva Bhadrapada, all four padas of Uttara Bhadrapada and all four padas of Revati. Because the Sun's label in this sign does not depend on its degree, the nakshatra does not change the dignity; it matters for the Vimshottari dasha only through the Moon, and for the Sun's own pada in the navamsa (D9) chart. The nakshatra pages go further: Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Pisces |
|---|---|
| Purva Bhadrapada | 4 |
| Uttara Bhadrapada | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Revati | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
What the classical texts say about the Sun in Pisces
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 66-67: the sign line
Saravali's Pisces line: friendly, inclined to save, fond of company and happy, learned, overcoming many enemies, wealthy, with a spouse, good sons and servants, money from trade by sea or river, and eloquence - though the same line calls the native untruthful, names disorders of the private parts (the text's claim, not medical advice) and many siblings.
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 50-55: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads the Sun in a sign of Jupiter (Sagittarius or Pisces) under the aspect of each other planet, one line per planet - lines it shares with the other sign of the same lord. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Moon: eloquence, wisdom, wealth and sons, the equal of a king, free of misery, with a pleasing body.
- Aspected by Mars: fame through battle, clear speech, money and happiness, and a short temper.
- Aspected by Mercury: sweet speech and knowledge of writing, literature, the arts, assemblies, journeys and minerals.
- Aspected by Jupiter: moving in royal palaces or ruling, with elephants, horses and wealth, and a lifelong love of learning.
- Aspected by Venus: refined company, scents and garlands, and a peaceful nature.
- Aspected by Saturn: uncleanliness, eating others' food, bad company and the breeding of animals, in the text's words.
Two readings follow. First, the sign does not settle the matter on its own: the same chapter that gives the sign line also gives aspect lines that pull it either way. Second, the Jupiter line is favourable here as it is throughout the chapter, which fits Jupiter's place among the Sun's natural friends; the other lines do not track the friendship table so neatly. The text gives no reason for the exceptions, and this page does not supply one.
Saravali Ch. 45: the dignity lines
Saravali Ch. 45 Sl. 12-14 adds the general friendly-sign line: firm in friendship and charitable.
BPHS
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign character line for the Sun. What it says about the Sun in Pisces comes through its rules: the dignities of Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, the relationships of Sl. 55-58 and the ratio of effects of Sl. 59-60, all used above. Saravali is the only text in this corpus that writes a line for the Sun in each sign.
- Agreed: the Sun is exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra, and has Leo 0-20 as Moolatrikona (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali Ch. 22 changes the verdict by the aspecting planet; BPHS weighs the relationship in the chart itself.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for the Sun in Pisces as such.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine scores them equally.
How the Lagna decides the house of the Sun in Pisces
Saravali's lines describe the sign. The house comes from the ascendant: counted whole-sign, Pisces is the 1st house for a Pisces Lagna, the 10th for a Gemini Lagna, and so on round the zodiac. The Sun rules one sign, Leo, so it rules exactly one house, and the table shows both for every Lagna. The house pages, such as the Sun in the 12th house, the Sun in the 10th house and the Sun in the 1st house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of the Sun (Pisces) | House the Sun rules (Leo) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 12th | 5th |
| Taurus | 11th | 4th |
| Gemini | 10th | 3rd |
| Cancer | 9th | 2nd |
| Leo | 8th | 1st |
| Virgo | 7th | 12th |
| Libra | 6th | 11th |
| Scorpio | 5th | 10th |
| Sagittarius | 4th | 9th |
| Capricorn | 3rd | 8th |
| Aquarius | 2nd | 7th |
| Pisces | 1st | 6th |
Read the two columns together. Where the Sun sits describes where its qualities are expressed; the house Leo occupies is the area of life the Sun governs as a lord. A moderately placed Sun carries that strength into both, which is why the engine's Kundali page reads the house Leo occupies through the Sun as its lord. The texts in this corpus do not give a separate line for each Lagna with the Sun in Pisces, so the table stops at the mechanics.
Worked example: 15 March 1985, 02:56 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Sagittarius rises at 23.1 degrees. The Sun is at 0.6 degrees of Pisces, in Purva Bhadrapada pada 4, in the 4th house. The lord of Pisces, Jupiter, is in Capricorn, the 11th sign counted from the Sun. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes a graha in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from another a temporary friend and any other position a temporary enemy, so here Jupiter is a temporary friend. Combined with the natural relation (friend) under Sl. 57-58, the compound relation is Great Friend, and the engine labels the Sun Friendly sign - the same as the natural label.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Pisces 0.6 | Purva Bhadrapada (4) | 4 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Sagittarius 14.92 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Aries 6.13 | Ashwini (2) | 5 | Moolatrikona |
| Mercury | Pisces 18.67 | Revati (1) | 4 | Debilitated |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 14.19 | Shravana (2) | 2 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Pisces 28.63, retrograde | Revati (4) | 4 | Exalted |
| Saturn | Scorpio 4.43, retrograde | Anuradha (1) | 12 | Enemy sign |
| Rahu | Aries 27.65 | Krittika (1) | 5 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 27.65 | Vishakha (3) | 11 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Sagittarius Lagna, Leo is the 9th house, so the Sun rules the 9th and sits in the 4th. The 4th is not a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th).
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th), none of the six other grahas aspects the 4th house here. So none of the Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 50-55 aspect lines applies to this chart, only the bare sign line of Sl. 66-67. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking the aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Mercury (18.67 degrees) and Venus (28.63 degrees) share Pisces with the Sun. Sharing a sign is not the same as an aspect in Saravali's scheme, and Ch. 22 has no line for a planet in the same sign as the Sun, so this page adds none.
Anyone can check this: enter the date, time and New Delhi in the Birth Chart calculator and the same positions come back. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows where the Sun's pada places it in the ninth-division chart, which some readers weigh alongside the sign.
How often the Sun is in Pisces
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the Sun was in Pisces in 250 of them, 8.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. Across the twelve Sun pages the counts run from 239 to 260 per sign, close to an even twelfth (250) each, because the Sun moves through the zodiac at a nearly steady pace and spends roughly a month in each sign every year.
Checking the Sun in Pisces in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Sun is in Pisces. Note its degree.
- Find Jupiter, the lord of Pisces. Count from the Sun's sign to Jupiter's sign: 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 makes it a temporary friend; the Kundali page shows the compound result as the Sun's dignity.
- Note the house Pisces occupies and the house Leo occupies: that is where the Sun sits and what it rules.
- List any planet in the 7th sign from Pisces, Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 50-55 line into play.
- For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Sun Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is the Sun exalted or debilitated in Pisces?
- Neither. The Sun is exalted only in Aries and debilitated only in Libra. In Pisces the engine labels it Friendly sign by natural relationship, and the fivefold relationship can change that in a real chart.
- Does the degree of the Sun in Pisces change its dignity?
- No. The label is the same at every degree of Pisces. What can change it is where Jupiter sits in the chart.
- Can another planet change the Sun's dignity in Pisces?
- Yes, one planet: Jupiter, the lord of Pisces. Its position relative to the Sun sets the temporary relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56, and the engine combines that with the natural one. Other planets change the reading through aspect, not the label.
- Is the Sun in Pisces the same as being a Pisces in Western astrology?
- Not necessarily. This app uses the sidereal zodiac, so the dates the Sun spends in each sign differ from the tropical sun-sign dates used in Western astrology. The Sun Sign calculator gives your sidereal Sun sign directly.
- Which Saravali lines apply to my Sun in Pisces?
- Always the sign line, Ch. 22 Sl. 66-67. The aspect lines of Sl. 50-55 apply only for the planets that actually aspect the Sun in your chart, and in many charts none does.
- How common is the Sun in Pisces?
- In this app's sample it was in Pisces in 250 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3 per cent - close to one twelfth, as expected for the Sun's steady pace.
