In short
Sun in Aquarius is the Sun in a sign ruled by Saturn, its natural enemy, so this app labels it Enemy sign by natural relationship. In a real chart the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 can soften that to Neutral. Saravali Ch. 22 reads it as strong and determined but restless, and shares its aspect lines with Capricorn.
Sun in Aquarius is the Sun in the fixed air sign ruled by Saturn, and the sign opposite Leo, the Sun's own. Saturn is a natural enemy of the Sun, so the placement starts low on the friendship scale. What the placement does with its strength or weakness is a separate question, answered by the house Aquarius occupies in your chart, the house Leo occupies (the one sign the Sun rules), and the planets that aspect it.
This page covers only the combination. For the Sun as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with the Sun in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Aquarius means - see Aquarius, Kumbha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about the Sun in Aquarius specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. If you only want to know which sign your Sun is in, the Sun Sign calculator gives the sidereal sign in one step.
Sun in Aquarius: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 sets the frame for every Sun page: the Sun's exaltation (uchcha) is Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and its debilitation (neecha) is Libra, the 7th sign from it, deepest at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 gives the first 20 degrees of Leo as the Sun's Moolatrikona and the rest of Leo as its own house (swakshetra). Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same Leo boundary. Every other sign is judged by the Sun's relationship with the sign's lord.
Saturn is the lord of Aquarius and the engine's natural-relationship table lists Saturn among the Sun's enemies. With no chart supplied, dignityOf returns Enemy sign for all 30 degrees. Aquarius is also Saturn's Moolatrikona sign (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives Saturn the same arrangement there as the Sun has in Leo), but that band belongs to Saturn and does not affect the Sun. Saturn is one of its two natural enemies (Venus and Saturn).
| Degrees of Aquarius | Label in this engine (natural relationship only) |
|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Enemy sign |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf in the kundali engine, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. For the Sun the tables hold one exaltation sign (Aries), one own sign (Leo), one Moolatrikona band (Leo 0 to 20 degrees) and one debilitation sign (Libra). Aquarius is none of these, so the label is decided by the last step, the relationship between the Sun and Saturn.
That last step is where a real chart differs from the table above. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives the natural relationship (naisargika maitri); Sl. 56 adds a temporary relationship (tatkalika maitri) from where the two planets sit in a given chart; and Sl. 57-58 combine the two into a fivefold scale from Great Friend to Great Enemy. The engine applies that compound relation whenever it has a whole chart. So the Sun in Aquarius reads Enemy sign when Saturn is also a temporary enemy, and rises to Neutral when Saturn sits in a temporary-friend position (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from the Sun).
One difference from the text is worth knowing. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades results: exaltation gives the full good effects, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's sign an eighth, and debilitation or an enemy's sign none. The engine keeps the same order but on its own scale: a sthana strength of 10 for exaltation and Moolatrikona, 7.5 for own sign, 6.25 for a friendly sign, 5 for neutral, 0 for an enemy sign or debilitation. For the Sun in Aquarius the result is a sthana of 0 by natural relationship.
For comparison, the neighbouring and contrasting pages: Sun in Capricorn (the sign before), Sun in Pisces (the sign after), and Sun in Leo and Sun in Capricorn. The general term is explained under dignity.
The nakshatras the Sun moves through in Aquarius
Aquarius holds padas 3, 4 of Dhanishta, all four padas of Shatabhisha, padas 1, 2 and 3 of Purva Bhadrapada. Because the Sun's label in this sign does not depend on its degree, the nakshatra does not change the dignity; it matters for the Vimshottari dasha only through the Moon, and for the Sun's own pada in the navamsa (D9) chart. The nakshatra pages go further: Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Aquarius |
|---|---|
| Dhanishta | 3, 4 |
| Shatabhisha | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Purva Bhadrapada | 1, 2, 3 |
What the classical texts say about the Sun in Aquarius
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 64-65: the sign line
Saravali's Aquarius line: great strength and courage, firmness in activity, and a short temper, together with little wealth, unsteady friendships, miserliness and disfavour with the learned. It also names heart trouble, which is the text's statement and not medical advice.
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 58-63: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads the Sun in a sign of Saturn (Capricorn or Aquarius) under the aspect of each other planet, one line per planet - lines it shares with the other sign of the same lord. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Moon: great cunning, and loss of wealth and happiness through attachments.
- Aspected by Mars: trouble from illness and enemies, and wounds from quarrels (the text's claim, not medical advice).
- Aspected by Mercury: bravery with weak limbs, and taking others' wealth, in the text's words.
- Aspected by Jupiter: auspicious deeds, wisdom, patronage of all, wide fame and intelligence.
- Aspected by Venus: dealing in conch, coral and ruby, wealth through women, and happiness.
- Aspected by Saturn: victory over enemies and prosperity through royal honours.
Two readings follow. First, the sign does not settle the matter on its own: the same chapter that gives the sign line also gives aspect lines that pull it either way. Second, the Jupiter line is favourable even in this group, where the sign line is weak, which fits Jupiter's place among the Sun's natural friends; the other lines do not track the friendship table so neatly - Saturn, a natural enemy of the Sun, gets one of the better lines for its own signs. The text gives no reason for the exceptions, and this page does not supply one.
Saravali Ch. 45: the dignity lines
Saravali Ch. 45 Sl. 19-21 adds the general inimical-sign line for the Sun: poverty and sensual torment.
BPHS
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign character line for the Sun. What it says about the Sun in Aquarius comes through its rules: the dignities of Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, the relationships of Sl. 55-58 and the ratio of effects of Sl. 59-60, all used above. Saravali is the only text in this corpus that writes a line for the Sun in each sign.
- Agreed: the Sun is exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra, and has Leo 0-20 as Moolatrikona (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali Ch. 22 changes the verdict by the aspecting planet; BPHS weighs the relationship in the chart itself.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for the Sun in Aquarius as such.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine scores them equally.
How the Lagna decides the house of the Sun in Aquarius
Saravali's lines describe the sign. The house comes from the ascendant: counted whole-sign, Aquarius is the 1st house for a Aquarius Lagna, the 10th for a Taurus Lagna, and so on round the zodiac. The Sun rules one sign, Leo, so it rules exactly one house, and the table shows both for every Lagna. The house pages, such as the Sun in the 11th house, the Sun in the 10th house and the Sun in the 1st house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of the Sun (Aquarius) | House the Sun rules (Leo) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 11th | 5th |
| Taurus | 10th | 4th |
| Gemini | 9th | 3rd |
| Cancer | 8th | 2nd |
| Leo | 7th | 1st |
| Virgo | 6th | 12th |
| Libra | 5th | 11th |
| Scorpio | 4th | 10th |
| Sagittarius | 3rd | 9th |
| Capricorn | 2nd | 8th |
| Aquarius | 1st | 7th |
| Pisces | 12th | 6th |
Read the two columns together. Where the Sun sits describes where its qualities are expressed; the house Leo occupies is the area of life the Sun governs as a lord. A weakly placed Sun carries that strength into both, which is why the engine's Kundali page reads the house Leo occupies through the Sun as its lord. The texts in this corpus do not give a separate line for each Lagna with the Sun in Aquarius, so the table stops at the mechanics.
Worked example: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Leo rises at 15.68 degrees. The Sun is at 3.18 degrees of Aquarius, in Dhanishta pada 3, in the 7th house. The lord of Aquarius, Saturn, is in Scorpio, the 10th sign counted from the Sun. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes a graha in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from another a temporary friend and any other position a temporary enemy, so here Saturn is a temporary friend. Combined with the natural relation (enemy) under Sl. 57-58, the compound relation is Neutral, and the engine labels the Sun Neutral, not the Enemy sign that the natural relationship alone would give.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aquarius 3.18 | Dhanishta (3) | 7 | Neutral |
| Moon | Sagittarius 13.58 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 5 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Pisces 15.99 | Uttara Bhadrapada (4) | 8 | Friendly sign |
| Mercury | Aquarius 0.22 | Dhanishta (3) | 7 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 8.4 | Uttara Ashadha (4) | 6 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Pisces 17.46 | Revati (1) | 8 | Exalted |
| Saturn | Scorpio 4.14 | Anuradha (1) | 4 | Enemy sign |
| Rahu | Aries 29.09 | Krittika (1) | 9 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 29.09 | Vishakha (3) | 3 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Leo Lagna, Leo is the 1st house, so the Sun rules the 1st and sits in the 7th. The 7th is not a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th).
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th), none of the six other grahas aspects the 7th house here. So none of the Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 58-63 aspect lines applies to this chart, only the bare sign line of Sl. 64-65. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking the aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Mercury (0.22 degrees) shares Aquarius with the Sun. Sharing a sign is not the same as an aspect in Saravali's scheme, and Ch. 22 has no line for a planet in the same sign as the Sun, so this page adds none. The engine flags Mercury as combust - close enough to the Sun to be lost in its light; see the glossary entry on combustion.
Anyone can check this: enter the date, time and New Delhi in the Birth Chart calculator and the same positions come back. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows where the Sun's pada places it in the ninth-division chart, which some readers weigh alongside the sign.
How often the Sun is in Aquarius
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the Sun was in Aquarius in 248 of them, 8.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. Across the twelve Sun pages the counts run from 239 to 260 per sign, close to an even twelfth (250) each, because the Sun moves through the zodiac at a nearly steady pace and spends roughly a month in each sign every year.
Checking the Sun in Aquarius in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Sun is in Aquarius. Note its degree.
- Find Saturn, the lord of Aquarius. Count from the Sun's sign to Saturn's sign: 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 makes it a temporary friend; the Kundali page shows the compound result as the Sun's dignity.
- Note the house Aquarius occupies and the house Leo occupies: that is where the Sun sits and what it rules.
- List any planet in the 7th sign from Aquarius, Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 58-63 line into play.
- For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Sun Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is the Sun exalted or debilitated in Aquarius?
- Neither. The Sun is exalted only in Aries and debilitated only in Libra. In Aquarius the engine labels it Enemy sign by natural relationship, and the fivefold relationship can change that in a real chart.
- Does the degree of the Sun in Aquarius change its dignity?
- No. The label is the same at every degree of Aquarius. What can change it is where Saturn sits in the chart.
- Can another planet change the Sun's dignity in Aquarius?
- Yes, one planet: Saturn, the lord of Aquarius. Its position relative to the Sun sets the temporary relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56, and the engine combines that with the natural one. Other planets change the reading through aspect, not the label.
- Is the Sun in Aquarius the same as being a Aquarius in Western astrology?
- Not necessarily. This app uses the sidereal zodiac, so the dates the Sun spends in each sign differ from the tropical sun-sign dates used in Western astrology. The Sun Sign calculator gives your sidereal Sun sign directly.
- Which Saravali lines apply to my Sun in Aquarius?
- Always the sign line, Ch. 22 Sl. 64-65. The aspect lines of Sl. 58-63 apply only for the planets that actually aspect the Sun in your chart, and in many charts none does.
- How common is the Sun in Aquarius?
- In this app's sample it was in Aquarius in 248 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3 per cent - close to one twelfth, as expected for the Sun's steady pace.
