In short
Sun in Leo is the Sun in its own sign, and BPHS Ch. 3 makes its first 20 degrees Moolatrikona and the last 10 simply its own house. This app labels 0-20 degrees Moolatrikona and 20-30 Own sign. Saravali Ch. 22 reads it as forceful, enterprising and royal, then changes the verdict by aspect.
Sun in Leo is the Sun at home. Leo is the only sign the Sun rules, and the classical texts give the first two thirds of it a higher rank still, Moolatrikona. It is the one sign where no other planet can change the Sun's label. What the placement does with its strength or weakness is a separate question, answered by the house Leo occupies in your chart, the house Leo occupies (the one sign the Sun rules), and the planets that aspect it.
This page covers only the combination. For the Sun as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with the Sun in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Leo means - see Leo, Simha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about the Sun in Leo specifically, how this app's engine labels it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. If you only want to know which sign your Sun is in, the Sun Sign calculator gives the sidereal sign in one step.
Sun in Leo: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 sets the frame for every Sun page: the Sun's exaltation (uchcha) is Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and its debilitation (neecha) is Libra, the 7th sign from it, deepest at the same degree. Sl. 51-54 gives the first 20 degrees of Leo as the Sun's Moolatrikona and the rest of Leo as its own house (swakshetra). Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same Leo boundary. Every other sign is judged by the Sun's relationship with the sign's lord.
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives the first 20 degrees of Leo as the Sun's Moolatrikona and the rest as his own house, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same boundary. The engine's Moolatrikona table holds one row for the Sun, Leo from 0 to 20 degrees, so a Sun at 19.9 degrees is Moolatrikona and a Sun at 20.0 is Own sign. Because the Sun is itself the lord of Leo, the friendship test is never reached.
| Degrees of Leo | Label in this engine (natural relationship only) |
|---|---|
| 0 to 20 | Moolatrikona |
| 20 to 30 | Own sign |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf in the kundali engine, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. For the Sun the tables hold one exaltation sign (Aries), one own sign (Leo), one Moolatrikona band (Leo 0 to 20 degrees) and one debilitation sign (Libra). Leo is caught by one of the early tests, so the friendship step is never reached and no other planet's position can change the label.
One difference from the text is worth knowing. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades results: exaltation gives the full good effects, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's sign an eighth, and debilitation or an enemy's sign none. The engine keeps the same order but on its own scale: a sthana strength of 10 for exaltation and Moolatrikona, 7.5 for own sign, 6.25 for a friendly sign, 5 for neutral, 0 for an enemy sign or debilitation. For the Sun in Leo the result is a sthana of 10 by natural relationship in the Moolatrikona band and 7.5 from 20 degrees on.
For comparison, the neighbouring and contrasting pages: Sun in Cancer (the sign before), Sun in Virgo (the sign after), and Sun in Aries and Sun in Aquarius. The general term is explained under dignity.
The nakshatras the Sun moves through in Leo
Leo holds all four padas of Magha, all four padas of Purva Phalguni and pada 1 of Uttara Phalguni. The Moolatrikona band, 0 to 20 degrees, covers all of Magha (0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes) and the first two padas of Purva Phalguni, whose second pada ends at 20 degrees. So a Sun in Magha or in the first half of Purva Phalguni is Moolatrikona; a Sun in the last two padas of Purva Phalguni or in Uttara Phalguni pada 1 is Own sign. The nakshatra pages go further: Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Leo |
|---|---|
| Magha | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Purva Phalguni | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Uttara Phalguni | 1 |
What the classical texts say about the Sun in Leo
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 34-35: the sign line
Saravali's Leo line reads: one who overcomes enemies, is given to anger, does notable things, roams forests, hills and forts, is enthusiastic, valorous and bright, eats meat, is formidable, restless, of lasting strength, talkative, a king, wealthy and famous.
Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 36-41: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads the Sun in Leo under the aspect of each other planet, one line per planet. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Moon: a scholar with a good spouse, dear to the ruler, with phlegmatic complaints (the text's claim, not medical advice).
- Aspected by Mars: courageous, valorous, revolutionary, formidable, a chief, and drawn to others' spouses in the text's words.
- Aspected by Mercury: a scholar and writer, but also a gambler, restless and mean, with great strength.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a builder of temples, gardens and water tanks, of great strength, fond of solitude and highly intelligent.
- Aspected by Venus: a bad name, a skin disease (the text's claim, not medical advice), unkindness and shamelessness.
- Aspected by Saturn: skill in creating obstacles and causing grief to others, with a remark about virility that is the text's own.
Two readings follow. First, the sign does not settle the matter on its own: the same chapter that gives the sign line also gives aspect lines that pull it either way. Second, the Jupiter line is favourable here as it is throughout the chapter, which fits Jupiter's place among the Sun's natural friends; the other lines do not track the friendship table so neatly. The text gives no reason for the exceptions, and this page does not supply one.
Saravali Ch. 45: the dignity lines
Saravali Ch. 45 has two lines that apply: Sl. 5-7, the Sun in its Moolatrikona sign gives wealth, intelligence and skill; Sl. 8-11, the Sun in its own sign makes one very fierce and a doer of great acts. The engine's split at 20 degrees decides which of the two labels a chart shows.
BPHS
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign character line for the Sun. What it says about the Sun in Leo comes through its rules: the dignities of Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, the relationships of Sl. 55-58 and the ratio of effects of Sl. 59-60, all used above. Saravali is the only text in this corpus that writes a line for the Sun in each sign.
- Agreed: the Sun is exalted in Aries, debilitated in Libra, and has Leo 0-20 as Moolatrikona (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54, Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali Ch. 22 changes the verdict by the aspecting planet; BPHS weighs the relationship in the chart itself.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for the Sun in Leo as such.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine scores them equally.
How the Lagna decides the house of the Sun in Leo
Saravali's lines describe the sign. The house comes from the ascendant: counted whole-sign, Leo is the 1st house for a Leo Lagna, the 10th for a Scorpio Lagna, and so on round the zodiac. The Sun rules one sign, Leo, so it rules exactly one house, and the table shows both for every Lagna. The house pages, such as the Sun in the 5th house, the Sun in the 10th house and the Sun in the 1st house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of the Sun (Leo) | House the Sun rules (Leo) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | 5th |
| Taurus | 4th | 4th |
| Gemini | 3rd | 3rd |
| Cancer | 2nd | 2nd |
| Leo | 1st | 1st |
| Virgo | 12th | 12th |
| Libra | 11th | 11th |
| Scorpio | 10th | 10th |
| Sagittarius | 9th | 9th |
| Capricorn | 8th | 8th |
| Aquarius | 7th | 7th |
| Pisces | 6th | 6th |
Read the two columns together. Where the Sun sits describes where its qualities are expressed; the house Leo occupies is the area of life the Sun governs as a lord. A strongly placed Sun carries that strength into both, which is why the engine's Kundali page reads the house Leo occupies through the Sun as its lord. The texts in this corpus do not give a separate line for each Lagna with the Sun in Leo, so the table stops at the mechanics.
Worked example: 16 August 1985, 23:25 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Taurus rises at 0.45 degrees. The Sun is at 0.14 degrees of Leo, in Magha pada 1, in the 4th house. The Sun is at 0.14 degrees, inside the 0-20 band, so the engine labels it Moolatrikona. As the lord of Leo the Sun never reaches the friendship test, so no other planet in the chart affects the label.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo 0.14 | Magha (1) | 4 | Moolatrikona |
| Moon | Leo 4.39 | Magha (2) | 4 | Neutral |
| Mars | Cancer 20.88 | Ashlesha (2) | 3 | Debilitated |
| Mercury | Cancer 20.6, retrograde | Ashlesha (2) | 3 | Neutral |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 16.85, retrograde | Shravana (3) | 9 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Gemini 22.94 | Punarvasu (1) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Libra 28.19 | Vishakha (3) | 6 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 19.44 | Bharani (2) | 12 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 19.44 | Swati (4) | 6 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Taurus Lagna, Leo is the 4th house, so the Sun rules the 4th and sits in the 4th, its own house. The 4th is not a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th).
Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th house from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th), none of the six other grahas aspects the 4th house here. So none of the Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 36-41 aspect lines applies to this chart, only the bare sign line of Sl. 34-35. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking the aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.
Company. Moon (4.39 degrees) shares Leo with the Sun. Sharing a sign is not the same as an aspect in Saravali's scheme, and Ch. 22 has no line for a planet in the same sign as the Sun, so this page adds none. The engine flags Moon as combust - close enough to the Sun to be lost in its light; see the glossary entry on combustion.
Anyone can check this: enter the date, time and New Delhi in the Birth Chart calculator and the same positions come back. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows where the Sun's pada places it in the ninth-division chart, which some readers weigh alongside the sign.
How often the Sun is in Leo
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the Sun was in Leo in 255 of them, 8.5 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. Across the twelve Sun pages the counts run from 239 to 260 per sign, close to an even twelfth (250) each, because the Sun moves through the zodiac at a nearly steady pace and spends roughly a month in each sign every year.
Checking the Sun in Leo in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Sun is in Leo. Note its degree: below 20 is Moolatrikona, 20 or above is own sign.
- Note the dignity: for Leo it is fixed, whatever else the chart holds.
- Note the house Leo occupies and the house Leo occupies: that is where the Sun sits and what it rules.
- List any planet in the 7th sign from Leo, Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 36-41 line into play.
- For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Sun Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is the Sun exalted or debilitated in Leo?
- Neither. The Sun is exalted only in Aries and debilitated only in Libra. In Leo the engine labels it Moolatrikona up to 20 degrees and Own sign after.
- Does the degree of the Sun in Leo change its dignity?
- Yes, at one point: 20 degrees. Below it the engine labels the Sun Moolatrikona, from 20 onward Own sign, following BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54.
- Can another planet change the Sun's dignity in Leo?
- No. Leo is caught by the engine's Moolatrikona and own-sign tests before the friendship test, so no other planet affects the label. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 22 Sl. 36-41.
- Is the Sun in Leo the same as being a Leo in Western astrology?
- Not necessarily. This app uses the sidereal zodiac, so the dates the Sun spends in each sign differ from the tropical sun-sign dates used in Western astrology. The Sun Sign calculator gives your sidereal Sun sign directly.
- Which Saravali lines apply to my Sun in Leo?
- Always the sign line, Ch. 22 Sl. 34-35. The aspect lines of Sl. 36-41 apply only for the planets that actually aspect the Sun in your chart, and in many charts none does.
- How common is the Sun in Leo?
- In this app's sample it was in Leo in 255 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.5 per cent - close to one twelfth, as expected for the Sun's steady pace.
