In short
A Bhinnashtakavarga is a single planet's own Ashtakavarga: the benefic points that planet receives in each sign from the eight reference points, the seven grahas and the Lagna. Saravali uses the name; BPHS simply calls it the planet's AshtakaVarg. This app computes one for each of the seven grahas, house by house.
What the term means
Bhinna means "separate", so a Bhinnashtakavarga is the separate, single-planet table within the Ashtakavarga system. For one graha, say Saturn, each of eight sources marks certain signs, counted from itself, as good places for Saturn. The number of marks a sign collects, from 0 to 8, is Saturn's score there. The seven such tables added together make the Sarvashtakavarga.
Where the term comes from
The name is Saravali's: its contents list Ch. 53 as "Planetary BhinnashtakaVargas", and the chapter then gives the Sun's, the Moon's and the others' tables in turn, crediting the method to the Yavanacharyas as a way to judge transits. Ch. 54 reads a planet by how many of its own points fall in the sign it occupies. BPHS Ch. 66 gives the same tables, place by place, but calls each one simply that graha's AshtakaVarg; the word Bhinnashtakavarga does not occur in its translation.
How this app computes it
- For each of the seven grahas the engine walks the eight sources (the seven grahas and the Lagna), adds a point to every place its table marks, and reports the result by house from the Ascendant.
- Each graha's table always holds the same total, whatever the chart; the seven totals add to the fixed 337 the engine checks.
- Rahu and Ketu have no table. The calculator shows each table raw and after Trikona shodhana.
A small illustration
For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi (Pisces Ascendant), the Sun's own table runs 1, 2, 6, 3, 3, 6, 6, 4, 5, 3, 3 and 6 across the twelve houses, 48 in all. Jupiter's table totals 56, and Mars and Saturn hold 39 each, the smallest.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
