Ketu in Cancer: no classical dignity, the Cancer-Capricorn axis, and what the texts say

Ketu in Cancer is the Moon's descending node placed in a sign ruled by Moon, with Rahu always opposite in Capricorn. No classical text in the corpus gives Cancer a special dignity for Ketu, and this app's engine assigns the nodes no dignity at all. What remains is the house Cancer occupies, a handful of sign-qualified lines, and the axis the two nodes form.

Ketu in Cancer: dignity, and how this app decides it

This app's engine gives Ketu no dignity at all. The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js looks the planet up in its DIGNITY table, which has rows for the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn only; for Ketu it finds nothing and returns Neutral, at every degree of every sign. The natural friendship table (NATURAL_RELATIONS) likewise covers the seven grahas only - the code comment says the nodes are "excluded from dignity scoring here". So Saturn-style labels such as Exalted or Debilitated never appear for Ketu on your Kundali page, and Ketu in Cancer is shown as Neutral from 0 to 30 degrees. The terms themselves are explained under dignity, uchcha, neecha and Moolatrikona.

That is a deliberate silence, not an oversight, because the classical texts do not agree on the nodes' dignities. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, introducing the effects of Rahu's dasha, says it will give the exaltation and debilitation signs of Rahu and Ketu, and then names: Rahu exalted in Vrishabh (Taurus), Ketu exalted in Vrischik (Scorpio); Moolatrikona Mithun (Gemini) for Rahu and Dhanu (Sagittarius) for Ketu; own signs Kumbh (Aquarius) for Rahu and Vrischik (Scorpio) for Ketu - adding that "some sages" make Kanya (Virgo) Rahu's own sign and Meen (Pisces) Ketu's. The passage does not go on to name the debilitation signs. Bhrigu Sutras, in its introduction to the nodes, calls the question "quite a controversy amongst the ancients" and quotes two more works: Uttara Kalamrita (Rahu exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, the reverse for Ketu; Aquarius Rahu's own sign and Scorpio Ketu's; Moolatrikona Gemini for Rahu and Virgo for Ketu) and Sanketnidhi (Rahu exalted in Gemini with Virgo its own sign; Ketu exalted in Sagittarius with Pisces its own sign).

None of these sources assigns Cancer any dignity for Ketu: it is not named as an exaltation, debilitation, Moolatrikona or own sign in BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita or Sanketnidhi as quoted in the corpus. This page therefore has no dignity claim to report for the sign, and none is invented. The signs the texts do name have their own pages: Ketu in Taurus, Ketu in Virgo, Ketu in Scorpio, Ketu in Sagittarius and Ketu in Pisces.

Because the engine attaches no friendship to Ketu, the fivefold relation that makes a Saturn or a Mars label change from chart to chart does not apply either. What does apply is Cancer's lord, Moon: it rules the sign Ketu occupies, so where Moon sits is part of how many readers judge Ketu - but that is a reading practice, and the corpus passages quoted on this page do not state it as a rule for Ketu in Cancer. The nakshatras Ketu moves through in Cancer

Cancer holds pada 4 of Punarvasu; all four padas of Pushya; and all four padas of Ashlesha. Ketu moves backwards through the zodiac, so it enters Cancer at its last degree and reaches these nakshatras in reverse order - Ashlesha, then Pushya, then Punarvasu. What the classical texts say about Ketu in Cancer

Saravali and BPHS: no sign-by-sign line for the nodes

Saravali gives each of the seven grahas a chapter on its effects in the twelve signs (the Sun in Ch. 22, the Moon in Ch. 23, Mars in Ch. 25, Mercury in Ch. 26, Jupiter in Ch. 27, Venus in Ch. 28, Saturn in Ch. 29). It has no such chapter for Rahu or Ketu, and the corpus file was searched for any line placing Ketu in Cancer. BPHS likewise has no sign-by-sign line for either node. So the character readings that the planet-in-sign pages for the seven grahas quote simply do not exist for Ketu in Cancer in these two texts, and this page does not supply one.

Where the texts do name Cancer

A few rules name signs for the nodes, almost always together with a house. Those that include Cancer for Ketu are:

• Bhrigu Sutras Ch. 8 Sutras 1-4: Rahu or Ketu in the 1st in Aries, Taurus or Cancer: the native is "kind hearted and fond of enjoyments". Applies only when Cancer is your 1st house - see Ketu in the 1st house.

The Bhrigu Sutras commentary also notes that its author gives the same results for Rahu and for Ketu in each house, on the view that, being always seventh from each other, they act alike; other authorities, it says, give separate results. The Chamatkar Chintamani lines quoted in that commentary are of this second kind.

BPHS on the Ketu Mahadasha

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 lists the conditions under which Ketu's dasha is read well: Ketu in a Kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a "benefic Rashi", or in its exaltation or own sign; in the 3rd, 6th or 11th it adds further gains. Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, or aspected by a malefic, is read the other way. The passage does not define "benefic Rashi". If it is read as a sign ruled by a natural benefic - this engine's BENEFICS list is Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon - then Cancer, ruled by Moon, would qualify; that reading is this page's, not the text's. Bhrigu Sutras on the nodes in general

The introduction to the nodes in Bhrigu Sutras adds two general remarks: that "Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars", stated as a belief rather than a rule, and that the nodes move retrograde at about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year, staying in a sign for about 18 months. It also gives a bleak list of significations for both nodes, which this page reports only as the text's statement. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara was searched and has nothing on Ketu in Cancer.

Where the texts agree, and where they part

• Agreed: Ketu and Rahu are always opposite each other, so Ketu in Cancer means Rahu in Capricorn (the Bhrigu Sutras introduction: the two nodes are "exactly 180 degrees apart").
• Disputed: the nodes' dignities. BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi assign different exaltation, Moolatrikona and own signs, and BPHS does not name a debilitation sign in the passage that promises one. This engine follows none of them.
• Silent: neither Saravali nor BPHS has a sign-by-sign character line for Ketu.
• House-bound: the only lines that name Cancer for Ketu also name a house, so they apply to one Lagna each.

Where Ketu in Cancer falls from each Lagna

The nodes rule no sign in this engine, so there is no lordship to tabulate - only the house Cancer occupies and the house Capricorn occupies for Rahu. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical. How often Ketu is in Cancer

Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Ketu was in Cancer in 249 of them, 8.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The nodes move steadily backwards - Bhrigu Sutras gives about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year and about 18 months in a sign - so every sign gets a similar share over a long sample, and the births with Ketu in Cancer cluster in a few stretches of time. Ketu is at 29.79 degrees of Cancer, in Ashlesha pada 4, in the 2nd house; Rahu is at the same degree of Capricorn, in the 8th. The engine marks both nodes retrograde, as it always does, and labels both Neutral, as it always does.

Sign lord. Moon, the lord of Cancer, is in Leo in the 3rd house, labelled Friendly sign. The engine does not feed this into Ketu's label, but it is the first thing to read alongside it.

Sign-qualified lines. Cancer is the 2nd house in this chart. The lines that name Cancer for Ketu need the 1st house, so none of them applies to this chart. BPHS Ch. 47's dasha conditions are house-based: the 2nd is one of the houses Sl. 72-77 reads against Ketu.

Aspects. In this engine the nodes cast only the 7th-house aspect, and receive aspects like any house: every graha aspects the 7th from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Rahu (in the 8th) aspects the 2nd. Rahu's aspect is automatic: being always in the 7th from Ketu, it always aspects it under this rule.

Is Ketu exalted in Cancer?

No text in the corpus says so. Ketu's exaltation is put in Scorpio (BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita) or Sagittarius (Sanketnidhi), and this engine assigns the nodes no dignity at all.

Why does my Kundali show Ketu as Neutral?

Because the engine's dignity table has no row for the nodes. dignityOf returns Neutral for Ketu in every sign and degree; it is a deliberate choice given that the classical texts disagree.
