The Moon and Mercury in one sign: Saravali's reading of the poet and storyteller, why Mercury counts the Moon an enemy, how a waning Moon can change Mercury's nature in the texts, and a 10th-house chart in which the pair forms Amala Yoga.

In short

The Moon and Mercury share a sign in 1,731 of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 (8.7 per cent). Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 9 reads the pair as a gift for poems and stories, wealth and a pleasant manner. The Moon counts Mercury a friend while Mercury counts the Moon an enemy, and this app detects no yoga for the pair as such.

BPHS gives the Moon the mind and Mercury speech. A chart with the two in one sign joins the faculty that feels to the faculty that says, and Saravali reads the result as a talent for words. On this site the pair is a yuti when both are in one sign of the whole-sign chart, with no orb. This page looks at an odd friendship between the two, at Saravali's generous lines, at how the Moon's phase can change Mercury's classical standing, and at a chart where the pair forms a yoga by itself. For the grahas separately, see the Moon in Vedic astrology and Mercury in Vedic astrology.

The Moon and Mercury as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 makes the Moon the mind and Mercury the speech-giver. Sl. 14-15 seats them in the royal court: the Moon one of the two royals, Mercury the prince-apparent. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 7 gives the same cabinet, and adds that the native takes on the qualities of the strongest graha. In a Moon-Mercury chart, then, the classical question is partly which of the two is stronger: the royal mind or the prince's speech.

On natural friendship the pair is the most lopsided of the Moon's conjunctions. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 names Mercury as one of only two friends of the Moon, with the Sun. The same sloka says "the Moon is Mercury's enemy". So the Moon welcomes Mercury and Mercury does not return the favour. Moon-Mars runs the other way: there Mars is the friendly one and the Moon only neutral.

Both are benefics, with conditions. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 lists Mercury as a natural benefic but adds that Mercury in the company of malefics, and the waning Moon, are also counted malefic. Put those two clauses together and a chain appears: a waning Moon is a malefic, and a Mercury in a malefic's company becomes one too. A reader applying the sloka literally would read a Mercury with a waning Moon as malefic, and the same Mercury with a waxing Moon as benefic. Saravali does not draw that conclusion in so many words; it follows from its two clauses.

How the engine treats it

This app does not apply either condition. Its BENEFICS list holds Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon in every chart, whatever the phase and whatever the company. Rules that look for a benefic, such as Amala Yoga, therefore accept a Moon-Mercury pair in all cases. The worked example below is a waning Moon that still counts.

What the classical texts say about the Moon with Mercury

Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 9 reads the pair, in this translation, as expert in poems and fables, wealthy, amiable to his wife, beautiful, smiling-faced, and endowed with distinct virtues. It is one of the warmest lines in the chapter. Every quality in it is social or verbal: stories, charm, a pleasant face, an easy household. There is no warning in it at all. Sl. 23 still conditions it on the vargas of the two grahas.

Saravali Ch. 31 Sl. 30-33 keep the tone in the angles. In the ascendant: happiness, intelligence, strength, fortune and splendour, a talker and very skilful. In the 4th: relatives, friends, children, valour, gold and good fortune. In the 7th: valour, royal favour or royalty itself, fame, a great poet, a soft disposition. The 10th is the only line with a shadow: honour, wealth, great fame and a minister's post, but grief in the last part of life and a want of relatives.

Saravali Ch. 32 adds a 9th-house line for Mercury joining the Moon: knowledge of the shastras, scholarship, excellence among men, much talk and fame, together with a physical claim this page does not repeat. Across Ch. 15, Ch. 31 and Ch. 32, then, the texts return to the same picture: learning and speech that win standing. For the house, see the 9th house.

Third grahas, and a modern book's silence

Saravali Ch. 16 gives the pair four three-planet lines. With Jupiter (Sl. 20) the reading stays bright: wealthy, skilful, eloquent, famous, with many sons and brothers. With the Sun (Sl. 2) it is splendour, intelligence, a love of the arts and royal service. With Venus (Sl. 21) learning and culture are set against meanness and jealousy. With Mars (Sl. 16) the line is severe. The third graha decides a great deal.

Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II has a section titled "The Moon to Mercury" (pp. 147-148), but it deals with the two in square and in opposition, not in the same sign. It says nothing about the conjunction, so nothing from it is used here.

Yogas this pair can be part of

The engine has no rule named for the Moon with Mercury, but the pair can complete one detected yoga on its own. Amala Yoga looks for an unsullied benefic in the 10th from the ascendant or from the Moon, following Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. I as the code cites. Both the Moon and Mercury are benefics to the engine, so the pair in the 10th from the ascendant can supply it, provided no malefic aspect spoils it.

The pair also settles two lunar questions. Mercury in the Moon's sign is not in the 2nd or 12th from it, so it cannot be the graha that forms Sunapha or Anapha. And because the Moon's own sign is the first angle from the Moon, Mercury there rules out Kemadruma. The full list for any chart is in the yogas calculator.

Closeness to the Sun

Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so a Moon beside Mercury is often a Moon near the Sun. The dense sample described below shows how often. Of the 1,731 moments with the Moon and Mercury in one sign, 683 had the Moon combust, within 12 degrees of the Sun. That is about two in five, far above the rate for the Moon with Mars (180 of 1,640) or Jupiter (118 of 1,617). Many Moon-Mercury births are new-Moon births. When the Moon is combust, Shad Bala sets its Sthana strength to zero. For the rule itself, see combustion.

The table makes the inner-planet effect visible. Mercury and Venus both stay near the Sun, so a Moon in their sign is more often a Moon near the Sun, and Mercury, the closer of the two, shows it most. Mars and Jupiter can be anywhere in the sky relative to the Sun, and the Moon beside them is combust far less often. The conjunction is the same rule in all four rows; what it says about the Moon's phase is not.

Saravali offers a counterweight that applies to every row. Ch. 5 Sl. 40, on auspicious planets, says a planet conjunct the Moon can bestow complete happiness and a kingdom that cannot be taken away. So in Saravali's scheme the Moon's company is a strength for Mercury, even as the Moon is Mercury's natural enemy.

Worked example: Moon and Mercury in Sagittarius, 10th house

A fixed search through New Delhi birth moments finds this chart first. Birth: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi. The birth chart calculator reproduces it. The ascendant is Pisces at 23.04 degrees, so under whole-sign houses Sagittarius is the 10th house, an angle.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Sagittarius, the 10th house. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 9 applies, and so does the 10th-house line of Ch. 31.
  2. How far apart? 3.97 degrees, the Moon in Mula and Mercury just over the boundary in Purva Ashadha.
  3. The Moon's phase: lunarDay gives tithi 29 of Krishna Paksha, a waning crescent 3.9 per cent lit, 22.8 degrees short of the Sun. By Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 this is a malefic Moon, and the chain described above would make this Mercury malefic too. The engine counts both as benefics.
  4. Combust? Neither. The Moon is just outside its 12-degree limit, and Mercury, about 19 degrees from the Sun, is outside its 14.
  5. Amala Yoga? Yes. The Moon and Mercury are in the 10th from the ascendant, and the engine finds them unsullied. This is the pair forming a yoga by itself.
  6. Other yogas: Durudhura (Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Scorpio either side of the Moon), Ubhayachari (Mars and Venus in Aquarius, Mercury in Sagittarius either side of the Sun), Kedara, Argala Raj Yoga, Sarala, Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) and Parivarthana (Mars and Saturn in each other's signs).

Note the Ubhayachari. Mercury, with the Moon, is also in the 12th sign from the Sun, so the same Mercury sits inside a lunar conjunction and helps form a solar yoga at once. For the sign and house, see Mercury in Sagittarius, the Moon in Sagittarius and the Moon in the 10th house. These are rules firing, not a reading of a life.

How often the pair occurs

The site's usual 3,000-moment sample moves about nine days per step, which throws the Moon several signs at a time and makes its pairs unreliable to count. This page uses a separate sample: 20,000 instants drawn at random with a fixed seed between 1950 and 2050, each run through computeChart for New Delhi. The Moon and Mercury shared a sign 1,731 times, or 8.7 per cent. In 1,008 of those they were within 10 degrees, and the widest same-sign gap was 28.94 degrees. Mercury was retrograde in 306. The Vimshottari Mahadashas are 10 years for the Moon and 17 for Mercury; see the Moon Mahadasha and the Mercury Mahadasha. Neighbouring pairs: Sun-Mercury, Moon-Venus and Mercury-Jupiter.

What this page does not claim

Saravali is kind to this pair, and the page reports that kindness as the text's reading of a placement in about one birth moment in eleven or twelve, not as a promise. This app gives the pair no score of its own. The Amala Yoga in the example comes from a stated rule about the 10th house, and it would fire for any unsullied benefic there, with or without a partner. Other software may define "unsullied" differently.

Are the Moon and Mercury friends?
One way only. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 counts Mercury a friend of the Moon, but says the Moon is Mercury's enemy.
What does Saravali say about the Moon with Mercury?
Ch. 15 Sl. 9: expert in poems and fables, wealthy, amiable to his wife, beautiful, smiling-faced and virtuous. Ch. 31 Sl. 30-33 are favourable in all four angles, with a late-life shadow in the 10th.
Does a waning Moon change the reading?
In Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 the waning Moon is a malefic, and Mercury with malefics is also counted malefic. This app does not apply that: it treats both as benefics in every chart.
Can the pair form a yoga in this app?
Yes, Amala Yoga, when the two are unsullied in the 10th from the ascendant or the Moon, as in the worked example. No rule names the pair itself.
How often is the Moon combust when it is with Mercury?
In 20,000 random moments 1950-2050, 683 of the 1,731 Moon-Mercury conjunctions had the Moon within 12 degrees of the Sun.
Does Advanced Predictive Astrology discuss the Moon-Mercury conjunction?
Its section "The Moon to Mercury" (Vol. II, pp. 147-148) discusses the two in square and opposition, not in one sign, so this page uses nothing from it.
Does the app suggest remedies for this pair?
No. It prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
