Doshas

Guru Chandal Dosha is a popular label for Jupiter sharing a sign with Rahu (some versions add Ketu). This app does not compute it. Here is what BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras actually say about Jupiter with the nodes, how often the pairing occurs, and a worked chart showing only the positions.

In short

This app does not flag Guru Chandal Dosha. The name occurs in none of the searchable texts in its corpus, and BPHS uses the word Chandal only in two lines on dasha sub-periods. Classically, Rahu takes on the results of the graha it joins, and BPHS reads Jupiter-Rahu periods by dignity, house and association, so the app shows the positions rather than a label.

This app does not flag Guru Chandal Dosha. No calculator returns it and no report lists it. What the birth chart calculator does show is where Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu are, which is everything the popular label is built from. This page sets out what the label means, what the books in this app's source library say about Jupiter with the nodes, why there is nothing here to compute, and a chart that shows the positions only.

What Guru Chandal Dosha is in popular usage

Guru is Jupiter, the teacher among the grahas. In current popular writing, Guru Chandal Dosha is the name given to Jupiter sharing a sign with Rahu, and some versions also count Jupiter with Ketu. Writers differ on whether an aspect counts, on whether the degrees must be close, and on whether a strong Jupiter changes the reading. The usual gloss is that the node corrupts or clouds what Jupiter signifies: judgement, teaching, children and fortune.

That is popular usage, reported so the reader knows what the name refers to. It is not quoted from any book this app uses, because none of them contains it.

The second word of the name is an old term for a group placed outside the caste order. The corpus does not say where the compound name comes from. The nearest thing in BPHS is Ch. 3 Sl. 41-44, which, among long classificatory lists of what each graha signifies, assigns Rahu to "the outcaste". This app does not carry caste classifications of grahas or of people; its engine comments record dropping one such classification from a source book entirely. The name is used on this page only because it is what people search for.

The condition used for this page's numbers

For real figures, the content tooling searched this engine's charts for the broadest common form: Jupiter in the same sign as Rahu, or in the same sign as Ketu. That test is used below only for a frequency count and to choose a worked example. It is not run on anyone's chart by the app, and it is not offered as the correct definition.

What the classical texts say

A search for "guru chandal" in every searchable astrology text in the corpus, the BPHS translation, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology and Daivajna Vallabha, finds nothing. (The corpus holds two BPHS files, but they are the same Santhanam/Sharma translation, so they count as one witness. Jyotisha-Siddhanta-Sara is held only as page images and could not be searched.) The name is modern, or at least later than these books.

Where "Chandal" does appear in BPHS

The word occurs on exactly two lines of BPHS, both in Ch. 61, which lists the effects of pratyantar dashas, the sub-sub-periods of the Vimshottari scheme. Sl. 26 gives "distress from Chandal" among the effects of the Venus sub-sub-period inside a Mars sub-period. Sl. 46, the Rahu sub-sub-period inside a Jupiter sub-period, gives "antagonism with menials (Chandaldhi)". The second is the nearest the text comes to joining Jupiter, Rahu and the word, and it is a line about a few weeks of a dasha, not a placement in a birth chart.

What BPHS says about Rahu joining a graha

BPHS Ch. 34, on Yoga Karakas, has the general rule. Sl. 16 says Rahu and Ketu give predominantly the effects of the house lord they are joined with, or of the house they occupy. Sl. 17 adds that if Rahu or Ketu is in a kendra and receives a drishti from, or is associated with, the lord of a kona or a kendra, it becomes a Yoga Karaka. On this reading a node takes its colour from its company. Joined with Jupiter, Rahu is expected to give something of Jupiter's results, and the text gives no rule that Jupiter is spoiled by the meeting.

The dasha chapters read the pair the same way, by condition rather than by verdict. Ch. 55 Sl. 8-12½ lists favourable results for the Jupiter sub-period inside Rahu's Mahadasha if Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign or navamsa, or in a kendra or kona; Sl. 13-14½ lists adverse results if Jupiter is debilitated, combust, in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in an enemy sign or with malefics. Ch. 56 Sl. 72-78 does the reverse for the Rahu sub-period inside the Jupiter Mahadasha: favourable if Rahu is in a kendra or kona, or aspected by a kendra lord, or associated with or aspected by a benefic; adverse if Rahu is with a malefic or in the 8th or 12th. Read against a shared sign, the two chapters pull in opposite directions. Rahu is a malefic (Ch. 3 Sl. 11), so a Jupiter in Rahu's sign meets Ch. 55's adverse condition "associated with malefics"; Jupiter is a benefic, so the same Rahu meets Ch. 56's favourable condition "associated with a benefic". Neither chapter names the pair as a fault in itself, and neither says how to weigh one condition against another.

Jupiter with Rahu does turn up inside longer combinations elsewhere. BPHS Ch. 9 Sl. 42 reads Rahu and Jupiter together in an inimical sign in the 1st or 4th as keeping the father from seeing the child for many years. BPHS Ch. 83, the chapter on childlessness attributed to previous births, uses "Guru associated with Rahu" as one ingredient in several of its multi-part combinations, each with other required conditions about the 5th house and its lord, and each followed by a prescribed ritual. The text prescribes propitiation; this app does not. None of these passages uses the word dosha for the pair, and none makes the pair sufficient on its own.

Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology

Saravali Ch. 15 reads every pair of the seven classical grahas in one house (Sl. 2-22). Rahu and Ketu are not in that chapter, so Saravali has no Jupiter-Rahu reading at all. The Bhrigu Sutras have one, tied to a house: under Jupiter in the 5th (Sutras 24-31, p. 78) they say that if Jupiter is with Rahu or Ketu, loss of children is attributed to the Serpent God, and in the same sentence that this will not happen if a benefic aspects Jupiter. The Jupiter in the 5th house page covers that placement in full.

Advanced Predictive Astrology, a modern case-study book, lists "Jupiter-Rahu" on p. 25 (Vol. II) among "controversial planetary groups" found in an average horoscope, alongside Mars-Saturn, Saturn-Rahu, Moon-Ketu, Sun-Venus and Saturn-Ketu, and attributes such groups to the previous birth. It does not call any of them Guru Chandal, and it does not single Jupiter-Rahu out from the others. On p. 123 it reports R. Santhanam's list of dasha and sub-period pairs associated with professional setbacks, which includes Jupiter-Rahu but, as the book notes, not Rahu-Jupiter; the author then adds his own view that Rahu-Jupiter belongs on the list too. Even within one modern book, then, the pair is read as a matter of periods and their order, and the readers disagree.

Why the app does not compute Guru Chandal Dosha

Every dosha this app flags is a rule it can state, cite and test. Here the pieces do not add up to one:

  1. The name occurs in no searchable text in the corpus, so there is no source to cite for it.
  2. The one general classical rule about a node joining a graha, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16-17, says the node takes on the graha's results, and can even become a Yoga Karaka in a kendra. That points the other way from the popular reading.
  3. Where BPHS does read Jupiter and Rahu together, in the dasha chapters, the outcome depends on dignity, house and association, with conditions on both sides and no rule for weighing them; a shared-sign label ignores all of that.
  4. Popular versions disagree on Ketu, aspects and orbs, so any rule the app picked would be its own invention.

What the app does compute that touches the same placements

  • Positions, houses and dignity for Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu, on the birth chart. Rahu and Ketu are computed as the mean nodes, exactly opposite each other, and always shown retrograde.
  • Combustion. Jupiter is flagged combust within 11 degrees of the Sun (Kannan's orb, as coded); BPHS Ch. 55 counts a combust Jupiter among its adverse conditions.
  • Yogas built on Jupiter's strength. The yoga check finds Hamsa Yoga when Jupiter is exalted, moolatrikona or in its own sign in a kendra, and Gaj Kesari, Amala and others by their own coded rules. It does not cancel any of them because a node is in the same sign; no source given in the code says to.
  • The doshas it does flag: Kendradhipathya, Mangal, Kaal Sarp and three Dhan Bhava caution checks. Kendradhipathya is the one that concerns Jupiter, and it is about which houses Jupiter rules, not what it sits with.

How common the popular condition is

The content tooling walks 3,000 birth moments from 1985 to 2060 at New Delhi and counts how many meet the example condition. These are sampled birth moments, not people.

Condition (popular form, not computed by the app)Moments of 3,000
Jupiter in the same sign as Rahu249
Jupiter in the same sign as Ketu225
Either (the example condition)474 (15.8%)
engine-facts.mjs guru-chandal-dosha and scratchpad facts.mjs, run 2026-10-13. Sidereal (Lahiri), New Delhi. Rahu and Ketu are always opposite, so Jupiter can share a sign with one of them at most.

Roughly one sampled moment in six to seven meets the broad version, and about one in twelve the Rahu-only version. Jupiter and the nodes are both slow, so once they meet they stay together for months, and everyone born in that stretch shares the pairing. That is a feature of the sky in a given year, not of a person.

How close is "together", and how strong is Jupiter?

A shared sign says little about distance. Across the 474 sampled moments, the gap between Jupiter and the node in its sign runs from 0.02 degrees to 29.2 degrees; a quarter of the cases are within 5.4 degrees, half within 11.32 and three quarters within 17.13. A shared-sign label treats all of them the same.

It also ignores Jupiter's condition, which is what BPHS weighs in the dasha chapters. Among the same 474 moments the engine grades Jupiter as follows:

Jupiter's dignity (engine)Moments
Exalted49
Moolatrikona8
Own sign63
Friendly sign88
Neutral136
Enemy sign90
Debilitated40
Combust (any dignity)28
Scratchpad extra.mjs guru-chandal-dosha, run 2026-10-13, over the 474 sampled moments that meet the example condition. dignityOf() and computeChart() combust flags.

So 120 of the 474 have Jupiter exalted, moolatrikona or in its own sign (Jupiter's moolatrikona band lies inside its own sign, Sagittarius), dignities that appear in BPHS Ch. 55's favourable list for the Jupiter-Rahu period, and 40 have it debilitated, which appears in its adverse list. The chapter weighs dignity alongside association; a label that gives all 474 the same name weighs nothing.

A note on what Rahu and Ketu are

Rahu and Ketu are not bodies but the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. The editor's introduction to the Bhrigu Sutras (pp. 12-13) tells the old story of the severed asura whose head and tail became Rahu and Ketu, and then says that they are now understood as points on the zodiac with regular, always retrograde motion that can be calculated as accurately as the Sun or the Moon. The same pages show the sources disagreeing about the nodes' dignities: Uttara Kalamrita makes Taurus Rahu's exaltation, Sanketnidhi makes it Gemini. This app computes the mean node and gives the nodes no dignity of their own, which is why the table above grades Jupiter and not Rahu.

Worked example: the positions only, 5 February 1987

The first moment in the walk that meets the example condition is 5 February 1987, 09:48 IST, New Delhi. Anyone can enter it in the birth chart calculator and see the same positions. The table shows the positions only; the app attaches no Guru Chandal verdict to them.

The positions only. engine-facts.mjs guru-chandal-dosha, run 2026-10-13. Ascendant Pisces 15.58. Sidereal (Lahiri), whole-sign houses.

What the positions show, read plainly:

  • Jupiter and Rahu share Pisces, 20.36 degrees apart, both in the 1st house with Mars. That is the only reason this chart was picked.
  • Jupiter is in its own sign, in a kendra. The engine therefore finds Hamsa Yoga, one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, on the same Jupiter that the popular label would mark down.
  • For a Pisces ascendant Jupiter rules the 1st (both a kendra and a kona) and the 10th (a kendra). Rahu is in a kendra, the 1st, associated with it. Read literally, that is the condition BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 gives for a node becoming a Yoga Karaka. The app's Yoga Karaka table does not code that sloka, so it is reported here as the text's rule, not as an engine result.
  • Jupiter is not combust: the Sun is in Capricorn, outside the 11-degree limit. Jupiter's 5th, 7th and 9th aspects from the 1st fall on the 5th, the 7th (Ketu's house) and the 9th (Saturn's).

The app's own output for this chart: its dosha list returns Mangal Dosha (Mild, Mars in the 1st) with Kaal Sarp absent, and its yoga check finds Anapha, Ubhayachari, Damini, Amala, Hamsa, Dharma-Karmadhipati and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). One chart, then, can carry a popular "dosha" label on Jupiter and a classical Mahapurusha yoga on the same Jupiter. The label has no source; the yoga has a coded rule.

The dasha side, from the same engine. The Moon in Bharani starts this chart in Venus's Mahadasha. Rahu's Mahadasha runs from 1 June 2025 to 1 June 2043, and the Jupiter sub-period inside it from 12 February 2028 to 8 July 2030; Jupiter's own Mahadasha follows, 2043 to 2059, with the Rahu sub-period at its end, from 6 January 2057 to 1 June 2059. For the first of those, BPHS Ch. 55 gives a favourable list when Jupiter is in its own sign or a kendra, both true here, and an adverse list when Jupiter is with malefics, also true here, since Rahu and Mars share its sign. The text sets the conditions side by side and leaves the weighing to the reader. The app gives the dates on the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and does not apply those slokas to them.

Exceptions the texts themselves state

Because there is no Guru Chandal rule, there is no list of its cancellations. The nearby classical rules carry their own qualifications:

  • BPHS Ch. 55 and Ch. 56 make the Jupiter-Rahu periods favourable when the graha concerned is well placed, by dignity or by kendra and kona, and Ch. 56 counts Rahu's association with a benefic in its favour.
  • The Bhrigu Sutras withdraw their Jupiter-with-a-node reading in the 5th if a benefic aspects Jupiter.
  • BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17 turns a node in a kendra, joined with a kendra or kona lord, into a Yoga Karaka.

What Guru Chandal Dosha does not tell you

The house view on doshas, set out in Kaal Sarp Dosha explained, is that a named rule describes positions and is not a verdict on a life. For a label with no fixed rule, that applies with more force.

  • It does not describe your judgement, your teachers or your children. No text in the corpus makes the shared sign alone carry any of those readings.
  • It ignores Jupiter's strength, which is the very thing BPHS weighs. An own-sign Jupiter in a kendra, as in the example, is a strong Jupiter by the engine's rules.
  • It is not one thing. Sites that include Ketu and sites that do not will disagree on the same chart.
  • It does not time anything. The dasha readings in BPHS are about periods, and they are conditional.
  • It is not a reason to buy anything. This app prescribes no rituals, mantras, gemstones or donations.

For the grahas themselves, read Jupiter in Vedic astrology and Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the pairs, Jupiter-Rahu conjunction and Jupiter-Ketu conjunction. The other popular labels this app does not compute are Pitra Dosha, Shrapit Dosha and Grahan Dosha. The word itself is defined in the glossary entry dosha.

Does this app check for Guru Chandal Dosha?
No. It does not compute or display it anywhere. It shows Jupiter's, Rahu's and Ketu's positions so you can see whether they share a sign.
Is Guru Chandal Dosha in BPHS?
Not by name. The word Chandal appears in the BPHS translation only twice, in Ch. 61 on dasha sub-sub-periods. BPHS's general rule for the nodes (Ch. 34 Sl. 16-17) is that they give the results of the graha they join.
Does Ketu with Jupiter count?
In some popular versions yes, in others no. That disagreement is one of the reasons the app does not pick a rule. In the 3,000-moment sample Jupiter shares a sign with Rahu 249 times and with Ketu 225 times.
Does Jupiter with Rahu cancel Hamsa Yoga or Gaj Kesari Yoga?
Not in this app, and no text cited in the code says it should. In the worked example the engine finds Hamsa Yoga on the same Jupiter that shares Pisces with Rahu.
Does it matter how many degrees apart Jupiter and Rahu are?
The popular label usually ignores it, and no corpus text gives an orb for the pair. In the sample the gap in a shared sign ranges from 0.02 to 29.2 degrees, with a median of 11.32. The birth chart gives both longitudes, so you can see the distance for yourself.
Is it the same as the Bhrigu Sutras' reading of Jupiter with a node in the 5th?
No. That reading is specific to the 5th house, concerns children, and is withdrawn in the same sentence if a benefic aspects Jupiter. The popular label applies to any house and has no such exception. See Jupiter in the 5th house.
Why does another website say I have it?
Because it applies a definition of its own. Compare the positions, which should agree between careful calculators, rather than the label, which depends on the site's choice of rule.
What should I look at instead?
Jupiter's sign, dignity and house, whether it is combust, which yogas the engine finds, and which dasha is running. Start with the birth chart calculator and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.
Does the app recommend remedies for it?
No. Some texts prescribe rites for combinations that include Jupiter with Rahu; this app prescribes no rituals, mantras, gemstones or donations for this or any other result.
