In short
Jupiter and Rahu share a sign in 249 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.3 per cent), in runs roughly every six to eight years. The popular label Guru Chandal does not occur as a yoga or dosha in BPHS, Saravali or Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus, and this app does not compute it. The pair also leaves Jupiter's own yogas, such as Hamsa and Gaj Kesari, untouched in the engine.
A conjunction here is two grahas in one sign, and under whole-sign houses one house; there is no orb. Jupiter with Rahu is the node pair that attracts the most attention, mostly because of a name, "Guru Chandal", that this page has to deal with first. The rest covers what the classical corpus does say, how the engine treats the pair, when it happens, and one chart. For the two separately, see Jupiter in Vedic astrology and Rahu in Vedic astrology.
Is this "Guru Chandal"?
In popular usage, Jupiter joined by Rahu is called Guru Chandal Dosha. This app does not flag it, and the reason is the source record. A search of the BPHS, Saravali and Bhrigu Sutras translations in this corpus finds no yoga or dosha of that name. The word "Chandal" appears in BPHS only inside dasha-effect lines describing trouble from a social group, which has nothing to do with Jupiter and Rahu sharing a sign. The label is modern as far as these texts go.
So this page treats the pair as what it is in the engine: two points in one sign, each read on its own terms, with the classical rules that genuinely name them quoted where they apply. A reader who meets the term elsewhere can check here what the positions actually are. The term itself also carries a caste word, and this app does not use caste framing for people.
Jupiter and Rahu as the texts describe them
BPHS Ch. 3 gives Guru the gift of "knowledge and happiness" (Sl. 12-13) and a minister's rank (Sl. 14-15), while Rahu and Ketu together "form the Grah Army". Sl. 30 calls Rahu smoky, forest-dwelling and intelligent. Sl. 11 counts Rahu a malefic, and BPHS Ch. 34 counts Jupiter the senior natural benefic after Venus. Sl. 47 puts them in different classes: Guru rules Jivas (living things), Rahu is a Dhatu (mineral) graha.
The texts disagree about Rahu's signs. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 gives Taurus as its exaltation, Gemini as its moolatrikona and Aquarius as its own, with Virgo as an alternative some sages prefer. Bhrigu Sutras reports other schemes and the belief that "Rahu acts like Saturn". This app avoids the dispute by labelling every node position Neutral. The natural friendship table (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, naisargika maitri) has no row for the nodes, so the engine computes no friendship between Jupiter and Rahu.
What the classical texts say about Jupiter with Rahu
Saravali's chapter on two-planet conjunctions (Ch. 15) covers only the seven bodies, Sun to Saturn, so it has no line for this pair. BPHS has no general reading either. What it has are specific rules in which the two are named together, each with its own conditions.
- BPHS Ch. 9 Sl. 42, in a chapter on difficulties at birth: if Rahu and Guru are together in an inimical sign that is the 1st or 4th house, the father will not see the native until the 23rd year. It needs both the inimical sign and the house, and is reported here only as the text's claim.
- Bhrigu Sutras, Jupiter in the 5th (Sutras 24-31): Jupiter associated with Rahu or Ketu brings trouble over children, attributed to the "wrath of Serpent God", but the same sutra cancels it if Jupiter is aspected by a benefic. The cancellation is part of the rule.
- BPHS Ch. 83, on curses from a previous birth, includes Rahu with Guru inside several longer combinations. This app does not use that chapter, and the combinations are not repeated here.
On timing, BPHS Ch. 55 describes Guru's antar dasha within Rahu's mahadasha as favourable when Guru is exalted, in its own sign or navamsa, or in a kendra or trikona from the ascendant. Its conditions concern Jupiter's placement, not whether it shares Rahu's sign. Outside these rules the corpus is silent on the pair.
Node pairs: what Rahu changes in the engine, and what it does not
Rahu is the mean lunar node, always flagged retrograde, with Ketu exactly opposite (see mean node and chhaya graha). It is never combust. Jupiter is combust within 11 degrees of the Sun; in the 249 sampled conjunctions that happened 17 times. Jupiter was retrograde in 78 of them.
Rahu leaves Jupiter's yogas alone. Gaj Kesari Yoga in this engine follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4: Jupiter in a kendra from the ascendant or Moon, joined or aspected by a benefic, and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. Rahu is not in that list of afflictions, so a Jupiter beside Rahu can still form it. Hamsa Yoga looks only at Jupiter's sign and house, as the worked example shows. And because Rahu owns no sign in the engine, the pair can never form a lordship yoga together.
Where Rahu does matter is Kaal Sarp. The engine places each graha on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis by longitude, so Jupiter a few degrees before Rahu and Jupiter a few degrees after it are on opposite sides, though both share Rahu's sign.
Benefic and malefic in one house
The engine keeps two fixed lists: benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, the Moon) and malefics (the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu). Several rules read them house by house. With this pair, one house holds the chart's senior benefic and a listed malefic at once, so a rule that asks whether a house is joined by a benefic, and a rule that asks whether it is joined by a malefic, both answer yes. That is the mechanical content of the pair in this app, and it is all the engine does with it.
Aspects add a second layer. The engine gives every graha its 7th-house aspect and Jupiter its 5th and 9th as well. Because Ketu always sits exactly opposite Rahu, Jupiter's 7th aspect from this conjunction always falls on the sign that holds Ketu, and Jupiter's 5th and 9th aspects fall on the two signs that form a trine with the pair. The node axis and Jupiter's aspects therefore cover four signs between them in every such chart.
When the pair happens, 1985-2060
Jupiter moves forward through the signs at about one a year and Rahu backward at about one every eighteen months, so they meet head-on fairly often. Running the engine daily (noon IST, edges good to about a day) gives these spans with both in one sign:
| Years | Spans with Jupiter and Rahu in one sign | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1987-88 | 3 Feb - 15 Jun 1987; 27 Oct 1987 - 1 Feb 1988 | Pisces |
| 1994 | 19 May - 11 Nov 1994 | Libra |
| 2001-02 | 16 Jun 2001 - 16 Feb 2002 | Gemini |
| 2008-09 | 10 Dec 2008 - 30 Apr 2009; 31 Jul - 17 Nov 2009 | Capricorn |
| 2016 | 30 Jan - 11 Aug 2016 | Leo |
| 2023 | 22 Apr - 30 Oct 2023 | Aries |
| 2030-31 | 25 Jan - 1 May 2030; 23 Sep 2030 - 17 Feb 2031; 14 Jun - 30 Jul 2031 | Scorpio |
| 2037-38 | 16 Sep - 11 Oct 2037 (Cancer); 18 Jan - 11 May 2038 (Gemini) | Cancer, Gemini |
| 2045 | 2 Mar - 12 Jul 2045 | Aquarius |
| 2051-52 | 18 Oct 2051 - 15 Nov 2052 | Virgo |
| 2059-60 | 25 Jun - 15 Jul 2059; 27 Nov 2059 - 3 Mar 2060 | Aries |
The runs come roughly every six to eight years and each lasts from a few months to about a year. Each new run falls four or five signs back from the previous one, because Rahu retreats while Jupiter advances.
Yogas this pair can be part of
None as a pair: the engine has no Jupiter-Rahu rule, and Guru Chandal is not computed. Jupiter keeps every yoga it would form alone. The yogas calculator lists what any chart triggers, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to read the list.
Worked example: Jupiter and Rahu in Pisces, 1st house
The first chart the fixed New Delhi search finds falls in the 1987 run. Birth: 5 February 1987, 09:48 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Pisces at 15.58 degrees, so Pisces is the 1st house. Check it in the birth chart calculator.
| Graha | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Pisces 0.60 | Purva Bhadrapada (4) | 1 | Own sign; direct; not combust |
| Rahu | Pisces 20.96 | Revati (2) | 1 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
| Mars | Pisces 25.63 | Revati (3) | 1 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Virgo 20.96 | Hasta (4) | 7 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
- Same sign? Yes, Pisces, Jupiter's own sign. No Saravali line applies.
- How far apart? 20.36 degrees; Jupiter in the first degree, Rahu in Revati with Mars a few degrees beyond it.
- Combust? The Sun is at Capricorn 22.15, far from Jupiter. Not combust.
- Jupiter's yogas: the engine detects Hamsa Yoga (Jupiter in its own sign in a kendra) with Rahu beside it. With Pisces rising, Jupiter rules the 1st and 10th and Mars the 2nd and 9th; the two together in the 1st give Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona).
- BPHS Ch. 9 Sl. 42? It needs an inimical sign; Jupiter is in its own, so the rule does not apply.
- Kaal Sarp? Not present. Gaj Kesari? Not detected: no benefic joins or aspects Jupiter's house here, so the second condition fails. Rahu plays no part in either verdict.
- Other yogas: Anapha, Ubhayachari, Damini and Amala, none involving Rahu.
A reader expecting a "Guru Chandal" chart to look damaged finds the engine reporting three Jupiter yogas instead. For the parts, see Jupiter in Pisces, Jupiter in the 1st house and Rahu in the 1st house. The example demonstrates rules, not a person.
How often the pair occurs
Jupiter and Rahu shared a sign in 249 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3 per cent, within one degree in 9 of them. The widest gap inside a sign was 29.20 degrees. Timing runs through each graha's own period: Jupiter 16 years, Rahu 18 (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). See the Jupiter Mahadasha and the Rahu Mahadasha. Related pairs: Jupiter-Ketu, Saturn-Rahu, Mercury-Rahu and Jupiter-Saturn.
What this page does not claim
This page does not say the Jupiter-Rahu conjunction is harmless, and it does not say it is harmful. It says that the classical corpus available here gives it no general reading, that the popular name for it is not found in that corpus, and that the narrow rules which do name the pair have conditions a reader can check. The app computes positions, combustion, aspects and the yogas listed, and it attaches no dosha, score or remedy to the pair. Anyone who wants to weigh the pair can start from facts the chart shows: Jupiter's dignity, its house, whether it is combust, and which side of Rahu's degree it lies on.
- Does this app flag Guru Chandal Dosha?
- No. The name does not occur as a yoga or dosha in BPHS, Saravali or Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus, and the engine has no rule for it. The app shows the positions so you can see what the pair actually is.
- How common is the Jupiter-Rahu conjunction?
- In this app's engine, 249 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.3 per cent, in runs every six to eight years.
- Does Rahu cancel Gaj Kesari or Hamsa Yoga?
- Not in this app. Gaj Kesari follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4, which names debilitation, combustion and an inimical sign as the obstacles, not Rahu. Hamsa looks only at Jupiter's sign and house.
- When are Jupiter and Rahu next in one sign?
- By this app's engine, the run after 2023 is 2030-31 in Scorpio, from 25 January 2030. The table above lists every span to 2060.
- Is there any classical rule about Jupiter with Rahu?
- Only narrow ones: BPHS Ch. 9 Sl. 42 (in an inimical sign in the 1st or 4th) and Bhrigu Sutras on Jupiter in the 5th, which the same sutra cancels if a benefic aspects Jupiter.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, pujas, rituals or donations for any placement.
