In short

Jupiter and Saturn share a sign in 216 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.2 per cent), in clusters about twenty years apart: 1999-2001, 2019-2021, 2038-2042 and 2059-2060 by this app's engine. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 21 reads the pair as heroism, wealth, fame and headship of a city or assembly. The app detects no yoga for the pair itself.

On this site a conjunction, yuti, means two grahas in one sign, which with whole-sign houses is also one house. No orb is applied. Jupiter and Saturn are the two slowest of the visible grahas, so unlike most pairs theirs is not scattered through the calendar. It happens in runs of a year or two, then not for close to two decades. Everyone born in a run shares it, which is worth remembering before reading it as personal. This page covers the classical reading, the long cycle, how the engine handles the pair, and one chart. For the grahas separately, read Jupiter in Vedic astrology and Saturn in Vedic astrology.

Jupiter and Saturn as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 sets the two at opposite ends of almost every list. In Sl. 12-13 Guru "confers knowledge and happiness" and Shani "denotes grief". In the cabinet of Sl. 14-15 Guru is a minister and Shani a servant. Sl. 11 makes Shani a malefic, while BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 counts Guru among the natural benefics. Sl. 20 gives them neighbouring elements, Guru governing space and Shani air.

The strength rules in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 make the opposition exact. Guru is strong in the East and Shani is the only graha strong in the West. Shani is strong at night; Guru is among those strong only by day. Benefics gain in the bright half of the month and in Uttarayan, malefics in the dark half and in Dakshinayan. Whatever the moment of birth, these rules favour one of the pair and not the other.

The app's Shad Bala follows the same split. Its directional (Dik) table puts Jupiter's peak in the 1st house and Saturn's in the 7th, opposite houses, and its time (Kala) part credits Jupiter in day births and Saturn in night births. A Jupiter-Saturn conjunction can never give both their directional peak, and never both the day-night credit.

Neither friend nor enemy

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives natural friendship from the signs counted from each graha's moolatrikona. In the table the engine uses, Jupiter's friends are Mars, the Sun and the Moon and its enemies Mercury and Venus; Saturn's friends are Mercury and Venus and its enemies Mars, the Sun and the Moon. Neither names the other. The two are mutually neutral, which is why Jupiter in Capricorn or Aquarius, or Saturn in Sagittarius or Pisces, gets a "Neutral" rather than a friend or enemy label in this app.

What the classical texts say about Jupiter with Saturn

Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 21 gives the pair its line. In this translation a native with Jupiter and Saturn together will be heroic, have plenty of wealth, be chief of the city ("mayor etc." in the translator's gloss), be famous, and be the head of an assembly, a village or an association.

It is the most public of the chapter's readings. Where other lines describe a trade, a temperament or a spouse, this one describes an office: a seat at the head of a group. It joins Jupiter's rank as minister to Saturn's association with the many, and the result is civic standing rather than learning or wealth alone. Unlike the Sun-Saturn line at Sl. 7, which includes the loss of wife and son, it attaches no loss.

Two cautions sit beside it in the same text. Sl. 23 says every reading in the chapter grows or shrinks with the vargas the two occupy, so a debilitated member, as in the example below, is exactly where the reading should be scaled. And a reading shared by everyone born across a year or more is, by construction, not a personal signature until sign, house, lordship and dignity have narrowed it. BPHS gives the pair no named yoga.

Hungry and delighted at once

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 defines two states that this pair triggers together. A graha "yuti with Shani" is in Kshudhit ("hungry") avastha; a graha "yuti with Guru" is in Mudit ("delighted") avastha. In a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction Jupiter is therefore Kshudhit and Saturn Mudit, by the text's plain wording. The same chapter says the bhava held by a Kshudhit graha suffers, so the text's two states pull in opposite directions. This app does not compute avasthas; the rule is given for readers who apply it by hand.

BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 adds a planetary war when two of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are within one degree, with the northern one the victor. Jupiter and Saturn were that close in 6 of the 216 sampled conjunctions. The engine does not compute it.

The twenty-year rhythm, in dates

Running the engine day by day from 1985 to 2060 (noon IST, edges good to about a day) gives every span in which the two share a sign. Retrograde motion splits several runs into pieces, because each graha can step back into the previous sign for a few months.

The pattern is clear in the table: four clusters, roughly twenty years apart, each beginning about four signs back from where the previous one began (Aries, Sagittarius, Leo, then Aries again). The 1999-2001 and 2059-2060 runs both fall in Aries and Taurus, sixty years apart. Between clusters there are long stretches, such as 2002 to early 2019, when no chart has the pair at all.

Yogas this pair can be part of

The engine has no rule named for the pair. It joins rules through lordship. Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) fires when an angle lord and a trine lord sit in one house; Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius, so for several ascendants the conjunction meets it, and the worked example is one. Both grahas also count in Vasi Yoga or Vesi Yoga when they flank the Sun. The yogas calculator lists what a given chart triggers.

Combustion and retrograde motion

The engine marks combustion within 11 degrees of the Sun for Jupiter and 15 for Saturn. In the 216 conjunctions Jupiter was combust in 21 and Saturn in 25. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempts Saturn (with Venus) from losing its rays when combust, but not Jupiter; the engine treats both alike and zeroes position strength for either.

Retrograde motion is common here, and for the same reason for both: an outer planet turns retrograde when the Earth overtakes it, roughly opposite the Sun. Jupiter was retrograde in 57 of the 216 conjunctions and Saturn in 58. Unlike pairs that include Mercury or Venus, nothing stops both being retrograde together.

Worked example: Jupiter and Saturn in Aries, 11th house

The fixed New Delhi search finds this chart first, inside the 1999-2000 run. Birth: 2 June 1999, 06:26 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Gemini at 1.47 degrees, so Aries is the 11th house. The birth chart calculator reproduces it.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Aries, so Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 21 applies. Aries is Saturn's debilitation, which is the case Sl. 23 asks the reader to scale for.
  2. How far apart? 15.75 degrees: Jupiter in Ashwini at the start of the sign, Saturn in Bharani midway.
  3. Combust? The Sun is in Taurus, 30 degrees from Saturn and about 46 from Jupiter. Neither is combust.
  4. Lordships? With Gemini rising, Jupiter rules the 7th and 10th (kendras), Saturn the 8th and 9th (the 9th a trine). An angle lord and a trine lord in one house: the engine detects Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) for Jupiter and Saturn together, and for no other pair in this chart.
  5. Other yogas: Vasi (Jupiter and Saturn in the 12th sign from the Sun) and Pasa (the seven grahas in five signs).
  6. Avasthas, by BPHS Ch. 45: Jupiter Kshudhit, Saturn Mudit. The app does not show these.

The example shows the pair at its most rule-rich: a yoga formed by the two of them, a debilitated member, and the Sun-side yoga. For the parts, see Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Aries and Jupiter in the 11th house. It is a demonstration, not a reading of a person.

How often the pair occurs

In 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Jupiter and Saturn shared a sign 216 times, 7.2 per cent. That figure is an average over the whole span. Inside a run, every birth has the pair; between runs, none does. The widest gap within a shared sign was 28.03 degrees. Timing in Vimshottari goes through each graha alone, Jupiter 16 years and Saturn 19 (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15): see the Jupiter Mahadasha and the Saturn Mahadasha. For where the two are now, the transit (gochar) calculator shows current positions. Related pairs: Jupiter-Venus, Mars-Saturn, Saturn-Rahu and Jupiter-Ketu.

What this page does not claim

Saravali's line for this pair describes public standing, and it is easy to read it as a promise. It is a classical sentence about a placement that whole birth-years share, reported here as the text states it, with the text's own instruction to scale it by vargas. The BPHS avasthas and planetary war are given as the text's rules; the app does not compute them. What the app does compute for the pair is shown above: positions, combustion, Shad Bala and the yogas that lordship produces. It adds no score or remedy for the conjunction, and it makes no claim about events in the years when the two meet in the sky.

Readers comparing charts across a run may find the pair in the same sign for siblings or classmates born months apart. The differences between such charts come from the ascendant, the Moon and the houses, which change by the hour and day. The lagna decides which house the pair falls in and which lordships it carries, and so whether the Kendra-Kona rule fires at all.

How common is the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction?
In this app's engine, 216 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 7.2 per cent, but concentrated in runs about twenty years apart.
When are Jupiter and Saturn next in one sign?
By this app's engine, after the 2019-2021 run the next is 2038-2042, beginning with 7-23 October 2038 in Leo. The full list of spans is in the table above.
What does Saravali say about Jupiter with Saturn?
Ch. 15 Sl. 21: heroic, wealthy, famous, chief of a city and head of an assembly, village or association. Sl. 23 adds that results scale with the vargas the two occupy.
Are Jupiter and Saturn friends?
In the natural table this app uses, neither lists the other as friend or enemy, so they are mutually neutral.
Does the pair form a Raj Yoga?
Only when one rules a kendra and the other a trikona from the ascendant, as in the Gemini-rising example. The engine then lists Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona).
Can both be retrograde in the conjunction?
Yes. Both are outer planets that turn retrograde when opposite the Sun. In the sample Jupiter was retrograde in 57 conjunctions and Saturn in 58.
Does the app suggest remedies for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
